Buddy would never understand the need for a psych eval with every new assignment. He was every bit as boring as he was each year at the academy as well as when he boarded the Saracen. Maybe this counselor could dig up something from his psyche that neither he nor Starfleet had managed to find. He doubted it, not the counselor’s ability, but that there was actually anything there to find.

Smoothing his uniform shirt in the reflection on the door panel, but reached out and activated the chime.

OOC: Hi there, and welcome aboard! :) Excited to have another great writer on-board!

“Come in!” a warm voice called from inside. As Ensign Cullum entered, a plain-looking trill man looked up from where he was stooped over, then glanced immediately back down at the salt-and-pepper schnauzer who had perked up at the new person’s entrance. “Stay,” Renveer said expectantly as he slowly stood up and turned to the Ensign, offering a smile and extending a handshake in greeting. “Ensign Cullum” he said brightly, “it’s good to meet you. I’m Counselor Renveer. Please, make yourself at home.” The counselor motioned with an outstretched palm to the loveseat that sat opposite of his armchair. Then he moved back to the dog bed and tossed a treat to the schnauzer. The dog, for his part, regarded Buddy with a tilted head, but eventually laid back down.

Buddy entered the room and immediately felt at ease, The room was designed for comfort and the atmosphere was relaxed. Then Buddy spotted the Schnauzer and a wide grin spread across his face.

The office was inviting in atmosphere, colored with earth tones and warm lighting. Renveer’s armchair was made of a similar fabric to the loveseat, both of which were designed for comfort when sitting for extended periods. There were end tables at either side of the loveseat and one next to Renveer’s chair, as well as a half-bookshelf along one wall and a small desk pushed up against the opposite wall from the loveseat. Two potted ferns decorated corners of the room, and there were a couple abstract paintings on the walls that seemed to be mostly color studies. A nondescript rug bridged the gap between the two seating options.

Renveer settled into his chair. “I hope you don’t mind that Wilbur has joined me for today. He’s been down the last couple of days, so I think he just needed a little bit more attention. I’ve been kept pretty busy since coming onboard, poor guy hasn’t seen me as much recently.” Renveer reached down and scratched the dog’s head. “Did you bring any pets along, Ensign? Or leave any behind?”

(Lt. Cmdr. Renveer, Counselor)

Buddy ignored the love seat and instead went over to where Wilbur was laying. He knelt down to the dogs level and exposed the back of his hand for the dog to sniff. “Why should I mind? He’s the best thing I’ve seen since I’ve been on the ship!” Buddy continued making silly faces and cooing at the dog, almost as if he was a baby. “And no, I didn’t bring any pets. I had a pug named Boots when I was a kid, but he died while I was in the academy.” Buddy never looked at the counselor he was so enamored by the dog. “Who’s a good boy?” he asked Wilbur. “Is it you? Are you the bestest boy?”

OOC: Sorry. Posted with the wrong character.

Renveer smiled down at Wilbur as the dog enjoyed the attention, his triangular-folded ears perked up and tail wagging. Wilbur was well-behaved, and stayed sitting in the dog bed, happily encouraging Buddy’s scratches by pushing up against his hand. At the questioning, Wilbur let out a soft bark in response.

“See, this is exactly what he needed,” Renveer chuckled. “Thank you, Ensign, for making his day. And I’m sorry to hear of your loss, the loss of a childhood pet is always heartbreaking.” The counselor seemed to be in no rush, allowing Buddy and Wilbur to pal around for as long as they wanted.

“Don’t be. He hated me,” he laughed, “always took to my dad. But he had a good life and he lived to the ripe old age of 17. How old is Wilbur here?’’

“About three, I think.” Renveer looked up in thought. “I’m not sure because he was a rescue that I adopted during our shore leave on Earth. His previous owner had died, sadly. But he’s taken to me well, even if the starship lifestyle doesn’t seem to be his favorite.”

He gave a couple of more scratches to the top of the pooch’s head before settling into the love seat. “Ensign Buddy Cullum, reporting for psych eval,” he said with casually as he propped one foot up on the other knee. “What would you like to know about me?”

OOC: Pancakes!!!! Son of a biscuit!!!

OOC: Happens to me all the time! Don’t worry about it!

Renveer nodded at the introduction. “And I’m Counselor Renveer. You can call me Renveer, if you like. Or counselor, whichever you prefer. What would you like me to call you, Ensign?”

“Well, almost everyone I know calls me Buddy,” he said with a smirk. “But seeing as though you outrank me by a mile, I think you may call me anything you like… Sir.”

The kindly man grinned at the question, causing the trill marking along the sides of his face to crumple slightly in his smile lines. “What would you like to tell me?” he retorted. “What are important things you would want someone new you’ve just met to know about Buddy Callum?” The counselor sat back in his chair as Wilbur settled down again, resting his head on the edge of the dog bed and looking at Buddy longingly.

(Lt. Cmdr. Renveer, Counselor)

The reversal of the question caught Buddy off guard. Usually, people asked him so many questions. What was his favorite color? Who were his musical inspirations? Boxers or briefs? (The answer was briefs, by the way. Always briefs.) Buddy had to think about it a moment. What was there to tell that wasn’t already in his file? He loved galactic punk music? He was the lead singer of Buddy and the Breen?<-i> He failed astral physics the first time around? If the counselor was with his salt he would know all those things already. Maybe the counselor wanted a different answer, one that Buddy wasn’t sure he could provide. The inability to answer this simple question made Buddy consider that maybe he had know idea who he truly was. The thought terrified him. For the fist time since he had boarded the ship the smile faded from his lips. “I want to be a security officer more than anything in the world. I must succeed at it and I’m terrified that I won’t.”

He had never said that out loud to anyone.
