Renveer pulled a table-sized frame from behind his pile of personal affects that had been beamed aboard the Dresden. He took a moment to admire the portrait inside: a sketched charcoal figure of a man, back to the observer, confronting a grey wall in the background. His shoulders were hunched slightly and they, along with the man’s head and neck, were shaded over with a dull red hue.Renveer glanced about the walls of his new quarters, then selected the best one on which to showcase his art piece, which he promptly hung and adjusted to make sure that it was just exactly straight. He nodded to himself in satisfaction before turning to leave his quarters, content to leave the rest of the unpacking until after he had rendezvoused with the commanding officer.
With a nod of acknowledgement to the bridge staff as he passed, Renveer pressed the chime to the colonel’s readyroom and clasped his hands behind his back, looking up thoughtfully as he awaited a response.
(Lt. Comm. Renveer, Counselor)
“It’s open… com’on in.” The voice from inside had a distinct accent that the Counselor couldn’t quite put his finger on. As the door hissed softly open, the Counselor would see a traditionally laid out Starship Commander’s office. However, the walls of the room were lined with awards and photos and just after the doors opened, a young Marine NonCom politely made her way out the door with a smile. The room was a grand place and the view was remarkable, even for a veteran spacer.
“”Ah… Counselor.” The Marine said with a warm smile as he stood to greet him, offering a handshake. “Welcome to the Dresden. Colonel Calvin Harris, Commanding Officer.”
After the handshake, Harris motioned to the large leather chairs. “Please, grab a seat.”

Renveer stepped aside to let the young woman pass, returning her smile as a passing greeting. He entered the room with a steady, relaxed stride, and subconsciously glanced around the well-adorned room and out the window to the stars beyond.
The smile returned to Renveer’s face as he leaned forward slightly to shake Colonel Harris’ hand firmly, his eyes betraying his excitement. “Renveer,” he said by way of introduction. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Colonel. And thank you for the warm welcome, you have quite a fine ship.”
“She’s a hell-of-a-ship, Mr. Renveer… that I can assure you.” The Marine spoke as a proud father speaking of a beloved child.
Renveer moved to settle naturally into one of the leather chairs, sinking into it a tad as he crossed one leg over the other at the knee. “I hope your day has been going smoothly,” he said offhandedly.
(Lt. Comm. Renveer, Counselor)
“Very much so…” Harris said as his warm smile reached the mischievous glint of his piercing blue eyes. “… how about yourself Commander? I hope the Dresden has proved as comfortable to you as she is to me.” His tone was cheerful and welcoming.
Col. Harris, CO
Renveer chuckled lightly, waving a hand in the air to motion to the ship around them. “I’ve only been aboard for a short while, but I can already tell she has a bit of a personality. As she and I get to know each other better, I’m sure we will get along swimmingly.” He grinned at that, enjoying the ridiculousness of the idea.
“Settling in to the ship is one thing,” Renveer continued as a good-humored transition, “but of course I want to integrate with the Dresden’s officers as well. I’d appreciate your insights into the state of the crew and how to best start to establish some rapport with them.”
(Lt. Comm. Renveer, Counselor)
Harris chuckled as he leaned back in his chair, running a hand through the perfectly cut Marine High & Tight and looking at the ceiling for a moment. Bringing his sparkling blue eyes back down to meet Renveer’s, Calvin smiled softly. “Well Commander… I hope you cleared your schedule before you came in here today.”
The Marine took a slow sip of his drink before sighing. “Tell ya what Counselor… how about we start with my First Officer? Have you had the chance to meet Lady Manning?” There was a distinct hint of pride in the young woman as he first mentioned Commander Manning.

Renveer nodded with a small smile. He clasped his hand around his raised knee, leaning forward slightly. “Indeed I have. She found me in my office just as I was getting situated. She’s obviously a dedicated officer. She cares for this crew a great deal. And she informed me of the… aftermath of your last mission that you’ve all been dealing with. Without support from a counselor, which is unacceptable I might add.” He had grown more serious as he spoke.
(Lt. Comm. Renveer)
Harris sighed softly. “Believe me, Commander, I agree with you. The past year or so has been a remarkably difficult period for the crew. We’ve dealt with challenge after challenge and…” The Marine looked away for a moment. His temperament noticeably changing. “… and let’s just say I’ve sent more Line of Duty Death Notifications in the past 12 months than I have in the past 12 years. To say it’s taken a toll is… is… an understatement.”

Renveer dropped his eyes to the floor, allowing a moment of silence to respect the weight of the Colonel’s statement. Then he raised his gaze back to the captain, expression serious but filled with sympathy. “I’m here to help, Colonel. What do you need from me? Both for the Dresden and her crew, but also for yourself personally. I know we’ll have other missions to complete in the meantime, but I don’t want anyone to feel as if their needs are not being addressed in relation to what happened before I came aboard.”
(Lt. Comm. Renveer, Counselor)
As the starlight reflection of Warp streaked across stormy blue eyes, Harris sighed and kept his gaze out the window… taking two slow, deep breaths before cutting those same eyes back to Renveer. “Counselor, I will be frank. I’m a warrior… a solider… a man that came from a long line of service members that choose to stand in the breech and fight for those that can’t. Don’t get me wrong… the last year has been frackin hard, one of the worst years of my life and believe me… I’ll be calling on you from time to time. But I’m worried about what my people have been through, what my Department Heads have been through, and…” Calvin looked away but not before Renveer would see a single tear fall from his eye. “… I’m worried about my girls. Brianna is like my second daughter, she’s been best friends with my Ali since the girls were 12. I’m worried about my Exec. Amelia was never, ever cut out for the horseshit we’ve faced over the last year… but damn if that girl hasn’t surprised the hell outta me.”
Harris smiled warmly, thoughtfully. “That girl has been through hell and hasn’t flinched. She’s arguably the best Executive Officer I’ve ever had. And then there’s my Molly.” Calvin blushed as he glanced to a picture of the couple in a park on his desk. “Molly and I have been together over two years and… and I’m crazy about her. But goddamn has through some shit… and most of it was my fault. I completely take the blame for that. That said, I can’t being to think of everything she’s been through for me. My crew, my DH’s, and my girls… that’s what I worry about Commander. It’s what keeps me up at night. You take care of them and than come talk to me. Otherwise, I think you’ll just have a mumbling idiot on your hands. Ya got me?”
