Issac found himself pausing outside of the sickbay on deck 3. Having only recently arrived on the USS Dresden to his first posting, he had been aboard only long enough to find his quarters and secure his possessions. It had finally settled in his mind that this was the new life he had signed up for, roughly four years ago when he enrolled at StarFleet Academy.
Issac brushed off non-existent debris from his still-new shirt; only recently had he finally traded in his Cadet uniform for a Junior Officer’s Security uniform in gold.
Collecting himself, he opened the sickbay door and took a moment to orient himself, looking for the Chief Medical Officer to proceed with the medical check-in.Ensign Issac Forgrave (Security)
Sickbay, Issac would see as his eyes seeked the CMO, was bustling with activity without actually seeming busy. There were only a couple of occupied biobeds, the rest sat unoccupied, ready for the next patient. By all appearences it seemed like an ordinary Sickbay, except for the small fluffy black and white dog that trotted around happily as if he ran the place. It only took a split second for the dog to notice the newcomer and make a beeline for Issac. It’s tail wagged back and forth faster than before as it sniffed at the smells around Issacs clothes.
The CMO was just dismissing her patient when she realised that the Enj had strayed again. Her eyes shot up as she scanned the area to make sure someone hadn’t accidently let him roam the Dresden by himself again. She didn’t need another call from Security saying they’d found him in the Jefferies tubes, or Science to (jokingly) say that Enj had volenteered for an experiment. As soon as she saw a new face and Enj at his feet, an amused smile stretched across her lips. Looked like Enj was doing his usual meet and greet. After nearly a year, Enj knew most of the crew, and most of the crew knew Enj who had quickly become Sickbay’s mascot.
“Oh! Dog!” Issac exclaimed as the small dog greeted him. Issac crouched down and began ruffling the critter’s chin and chest in way of greeting, letting it sniff and lick as it pleased.
As she approached Enj flicked his head back, and ran between her and Forgrave as if trying to introduce her to the newcommer. “Is he bothering you?” the doctor asked as she approached. She was young, and her petite size made her look younger, like she was fresh out of the acadamy but the pips on her uniform indicated she was a (junior) Lieutenant. “The staff and patients don’t normally mind him so he’s allowed to roam around Sickbay, but if he’s being a bother I can send him away.”
Lt. (j.g.) Janvier & Enj, CMO
“Naw, he’s a sweetheart; ain’t botherin’ me a bit.” Issac’s thick southern accent lilted a bit on “he’s,” leaving the question on the friendly dog’s gender. Issac stood, glancing down at his mostly-black uniform as he rose. “Probably ought to borrow a lint roller or a bit of tape off of ya, though…” Issac grinned sheepishly. “I’ll admit to being caught off guard though, can’t say I was expecting much in the way of pets aboard a ship. Pleasant surprise though!”
“We have a lint roller. I’m well stocked,” Elanie smiled, faintly amused “Enj has been with me since the Acadamy, he’s my…” she paused for a moment, he was more than just a pet to her, but he was no longer the therapy dog that her cousin had intended him to be. “… companion. He goes where I go. He’s a good boy.” she finished, clearing up the question of the dogs gender.
“Ah, Manners! Pardon me, I got distracted by the four-legged cutie; though somethin’ tells me it ain’t the first time that’s happened. Ensign Issac Forgrave, Reporting for Medical Check-in Ma’am.” Issac stood a bit straighter as he announced himself, coming to a loose Attention and extending his hand forwards to shake.
Looking at Ensign Forgrave, one would find a sturdily-built man in is early thirties, of an average height. Immediately notable would be a thick, dark mustache that had been lightly waxed and styled. Combined with the short, almost shaved hair on his head, Issac had a fairly distinctive appearance. A bit of a lingering grin from the unexpected canine greeting left his facial expression somewhat lopsided.

“No, you’re not the first. He’s a bit of a crowd favourite this one.” Elaine smiled, leaning down to ruffle up Enj’s ears fondly. The dog lapped lightly at her hand in return “Doctor Elanie Janvier,” straightening up the good doctor shook Forgrave’s hand, “Welcome aboard.”
Ending the handshake Janvier stepped back and guestured to a nearby (empty) biobed. “Take a seat, and we’ll get your medical out of the way for you. You’ll be itching to get settled in, I’m sure.”
Lt. (j.g.) Janvier & Enj, CMO
Issac moved over to the suggested biobed, taking a seat. “I’ll admit to it having been a long day already; I suppose it’s what we signed up for though.”
“Anything in particular y’all are looking for? I’m uh, not sure if y’all have any specific things you’re looking for with the on-boarding other than routine medical. I’m assuming ya got my file as well.” Issac said the last with a bit of a shrug.
OOC: I do have a brief medical wite-up in Issac’s bio currently.Ensign Forgrave, Security
OOC: Awesome, I’ll check it out. Also feel free to add in any extra information if you want after Elaine has scanned Issac.
Enj trotted happily over behind the pair and jumped up on the biobed sitting nicely next to Issac as if he was waiting for his own checkup.
Janvier left him there while she pulled out a medical PADD and a medical tricorder. “I have your file on here somewhere,” she waved the PADD, and tapped on it, pulling his file up for her to read. “And don’t worry about this check up, this is just to make sure that nothing has changed since your last medical, that you’re still fit and healthy. It’s also a good way to monitor your normal body functions. I can tell you if your iron levels are too low or if…” she trailed off, quickly reading through his file to familiarize herself with it, “… or if your lead levels get any higher.” her eyes racked over the page, making a mental note to discuss more of that once she’d finished her scans.
Issac looked sheepish at the mention of lead levels. “Yeah, I had a long… discussion with several doctors about that when I was admitted into the academy… Not that I’ve had the opportunity to do any lead casting since I joined up, but I’ll uh, be sure to be careful in the future if I mess with any.” Issac shrugged and continued “I used to do a lot of work with antique firearms; not too much call for that aboard a Federation ship I figure.”
“Alright, Enj you need to move,” the doctor said as she tested the tricorder out of habit. Enj let out and almost human sigh, but obediently hopped off the biobed. If he had stayed the tricorder would read both biosigns and send her confused data. The last thing she needed was for it to tell her that Forgraves heart was beating faster than the average human because the reading was actually of Enj’s heart rate. Once she was confident that everything was in order, she ran the tricorder over Isacc, reading the scans as it went.
Lt. (j.g.) Janvier & Enj, CMO
Issac sat patiently as the tricorder was run over him; wondering if any surprises would be revealed. He still felt some residual embarrassment over the severe admonishment that he endured upon his initial academy examination. From the dressing down he had received, he’d have thought he was well on the way to killing himself with his “severely outdated and dangerous lifestyle,” according to the medical officer.
“I won’t scold you for it this time,” Elaine said, straightfaced, but the twinkle in her eye gave away her teasing. “I know what the Acadamy doctors can be like,” she winced thinking of her own discussions that she had had with them when they had found out that she had been stealing medical equipment and treating herself. She had thought she could get away with it, if she returned everything after. But after the attack, the poor regeneration from her inexperience had given her away. She hadn’t been able to look Dr Tryal in the eyes for at least a week after the scolding she had recieved. “But if you’re going to play around with any of those old guns here at least do it in Sickbay or the Science labs, we have Fume Hoods and the proper equipment for those who want to mess with hazadous equipment.”
Well, he could admit that proper ventilation and PPE were good practice, and he intended to keep that in mind if he started casting lead again. Not that that was very likely…
The examination didn’t take long, and Issac shuffled a bit as Janvier looked over the results. He tried to remember if he had any significant medical incidents during his time at the academy, but nothing really stood out; just the typical cuts and bruises sustained during Security training.

Bump :)
As soon as he saw the doctor putting away the tricorder, Enj jumped back up onto the bed and lay next to Forgrave. Janvier just shook her head at him and went back to reading the results.
Issac absent-mindedly ruffled Enj’s ears as he patiently waited for his prognosis.
“Well you’re fit for duty,” Elaine said when she had finished reading the scans, “Aside from a few scrapes and bruises which I can heal up for you; and I’d like to give you some Chelation to treat the lead.” she held out a dermal regenerator and a hypospray as if asking Forgrave which treatment he wanted her to do first.
Lt. (j.g) Janvier, CMO & Enj
Issac looked a bit surprised at the mention of lead. “More Chelation? Wait, no… Yeah, that’s right.” Nodding as the memory returned to him, he continued. “I think I remember the academy doc mentioning somethin’ along these lines… I got a pretty hefty round of treatment when I joined up, but she’d mentioned that my levels may rise a bit over a couple a’ years or so, and it’d likely get caught with onboarding. Maybe there was some talk of… precipitating out of the marrow over time? She’d said that it shouldn’t be nothing to worry too much about, but… Here Issac shrugged Not like there’s any good amounts of lead to have in my blood.”
Shrugging again; “I suppose whatever order works best for you, Ma’am. Can’t say I’m picky. Nothing else planned today but checking in with security, and gettin’ settled inta my quarters.”
Ensign Issac Forgrave, Security

“Your doc would be right. It’s not worth worrying about, but it’s definitely worth keeping an eye on.” Elaine said prepping the hypo with the chelation first. Given that it could occassionally have side affects that she might need to treat she figured it would be best to do that first. That way she could give the hypo time come in to effect while she healed up his Security injuries.
“Let me know if you feel any dizziness or nausea.” The CMO said, “If you haven’t felt any side effects before than you should be alright, but given this is a boarding check your body could respond differently to how it normally does.”
Lt. (j.g.) Janvier, CMO
Issac thought he could feel the chelation treatment coursing through his body; his bones seemed to tingle, then ache as the treatment ran its course. It wasn’t a pleasant feeling, but nor was it unbearable by any means. A slight unsteadiness passed through him in waves, timed with the ache in his bones; or marrow, he supposed. It was minor, but Issac was grateful to be sitting - he suspected that keeping to his feet might have been difficult.
“I’m certainly feelin’ it Doc, but it ain’t near as bad as the first go-round. Felt like my bones wanted to jump outta my skin the first time I got treated.”

Janviers face winced at the mental image her brain provided, “I’ll give you some Vertazine,” she said, suspecting he was downplaying how he was feeling. “That should counteract any vertigo you may feel. Normally you shouldn’t need it, but transferring to a new ship tends to throw your body off kilter a little.” As she talked she prepped the second hypo, using the chatter to cover time. As soon as it was ready, she turned back to her patient.
“What’s the strangest thing you’ve encountered as a Security officer?” she asked casually as she administered the Vertazine and got to work on using the dermal regenerator on the numerous scrapes and bruises Issac had aquired.
Lt. Janvier, CMO
“The strangest? Hmmm…” Issac took a moment to think back to the Academy; appreciative for the distraction. “Well, I ain’t been in Starfleet for too long, but there was an Incident from my last year in the Academy that stands out.”
“We were on a… long-range patrol, of sorts. Cruising around a few planets and outposts that were more on the fringes of Federation space, I suppose. Other than stopping in at a few outposts, we didn’t really encounter much out there; a few smugglers and traders. Good practice for diplomacy and boarding though.”
“So one day, we get a distress call from a guy, claiming to be a trader. Thing is, the Chief recognized his transponder code; seems it belonged to a small-time smuggler. He’d gotten busted a number of times, but not with anything really serious; usually just minor restricted goods, or skipping fees, stuff like that. Small-time.”
“Right from the get-go, the call is… weird. Guy claims that he’s lost all oxygen, and that he’s dying - only, he sure seems to be talking just fine, just panicked. So we ask if he’s on backup air, or using a respirator, or whatever, and his response is that No! I’m managing to hold my breath so far!“
Elaine made a strange little choked sound, trying to keep in the snort at the turn in the story.
Issac couldn’t help but laugh in memory.
“Hold his breath? Not damn likely! Anyways, we beam over to… lend assistance; and we go in with full gear - masks and personal air, just to be safe. Science officer tells us that there’s plenty of air, but it is contaminated with an unknown substance; possibly a hallucinogen; so keep masks on just to be safe. We get to the cockpit, and here’s our guy, still trying to hold his breath. He’d just… breathe in real fast whenever he had to, as if that used less air? We throw a spare mask on him, and start pumping him full of… Impedrazine, I think, to hopefully bring him back around.”
“Well, it worked and he soon started talking. Apparently, he took on a load of some fairly newly-discovered fungus powder, hoping to sell it on the black market. And since it was as of yet unregulated, it was… skirting Federation law, if not outright illegal. Looking at the cargo, it was badly stored - seems a few packages had broken open and started getting into the air system, causing him to start hallucinating. Well, we secured the powder, and dropped him and the ship at the nearest outpost.”
“Did he get into any trouble for all the commotion his foolishness caused?” Elaine asked out of curiosity as she worked on healing a particularly large bruise on Issac’s arm.
“I think he ended up paying a fine for… ‘Unlicensed and improper transportation of goods?’ Something like that; and within a month that fungus was regulated. Now they’d impound your ship and you’d be in prison for a long time for doing the exact same thing. Guy was known as ‘Luck’ Bathon; and damn if that wasn’t about right. Just enough luck to stay out of serious trouble, not enough to actually make any money.”
Issac chuckled as he finished his story, and found himself wondering if he’d run into the hapless smuggler again.
Ensign Issac Forgrave, Security
Elaine shook her head slightly, “With all that luck on his side, imagine how well he could prosper if he kept on the right side of the law.” she said with a slight chuckle. “If I could have pure dumb luck like that I’d find a way to utilise it rather than squander it on trying to stay out of deep trouble,”
“I’d have to agree with ya there; but I suppose everyone’s got their own mind. From talking to a few people that tended to be… more freelance than most traders, a lot of them are looking for a massive payday. I think some of them just like being ‘free,’ whatever that might mean to them.”
She finished up and put the dermal regenerator aside and apprised her patient. “You’re all good and healed up now. You’ll feel a little tender in places where your bruises and cuts were a little deeper, and given you were feeling the Chelation as well I’d recommend you take a good solid nap. You don’t have to. It’s just to give your body some rest after all the healing and medication it’s had to undergo. Especially after all the travel it probably took you to get here.” she shrugged, “Of course it’s up to you, but I’ll warrent you’ll feel a lot better afterwards.”
Lt. Janvier, CMO
“Thank ya Ma’am; I appreciate it.” Issac rolled his shoulders, easing some of the tightness that had built up. “I… I might do just that. I’m intendin’ ta meet with the Security Chief this afternoon, but I ain’t set a time for that. Could probably sneak a quick nap in before then.”
Getting up from the bench was a bit slower than normal; Issac stifled a grimace as he stretched in place, trying to loosen up. Yeah, a quick nap would be good… “Well, I do appreciate your time today; it was a pleasure meeting you. And Enj, of course!” Issac shot a warm look at the dog, before returning his attention to the CMO. “Hopefully I’ll be able to avoid seein’ ya in a professional capacity, though I might have to sneak in to say ‘hi’ to the little guy.”
Enj’s head shot up at the mention of his name and his tail started thumping happily. “You are more than welcome to visit him,” Elaine smiled, “If you want you can even taking him for walks around the ship while I’m working. Ensign Lucia and Ensign Jeffereds like to and Enj just loves it.”
“I don’t suppose there’s anything else needs doin’?” Issac paused before leaving, wanting to make sure the check-in process was indeed, complete. “And if anything starts feeling funny, I’ll be sure to find ya of course.” He thought that was unlikely, but worth mentioning. During academy, he had been occasionally been called to… ‘assist’ some members of the crew in finding their way to the sickbay; he didn’t want the medical officer to hold those concerns for him.
Ensign Issac Forgrave, Security
“You are good to go and I’m glad to hear it,” Janvier grinned, “I don’t really like playing hide-and-seek with my patients, it’s exhausting.” There was nothing more frusterating than knowing there was someone needing medical attention and refusing it. Janvier was a trained healer, so was all her staff, they were trained to heal, all their instincts were honed so that they could keep the crew of the ship able and function, and when someone avoided treatment it ruined that. So although it wasn’t necessary for Issac to mention that he would rely on sickbay, it was much appreciated. One less crew member to worry about chasing down when there were enough officers already that required a little extra medical babysitting.
She picked up a PADD and typed into Forgrave’s file, “I’ve just submitted that you passed your physical, so you are all cleared to go. If you want I can write in a note to the Chief about your check in with him being delayed if you want?”
Lt. Janvier, CMO & Enj
Issac thought a moment before responding. “Yes, I’d appreciate it if you could do that for me. I ain’t set up a time to meet with him yet, but that’ll give the Chief a heads-up that it may be a bit later than anticipated. And I think I’d make a better impression after that nap; I expect to start fadin’ fast, now you got me thinking about it.” Issac started to grin, but was interrupted by a yawn.
Elaine chuckled at the yawn, “Sounds like a nap is just what you need,”
“Well I weren’t trying to make a point, but oh well. Thank ya for yer time again, Ma’am.” Chuckling, Issac extended his arm for a parting handshake. “Might see if I can’t swing by once I’m settled in; take Enj for a walk.”
Ensign Issac Forgrave, Security
At the word walk Enj jumped up from his seat his tail wagging wildly. “No problem,” Elaine smiled, grasping his hand for the handshake, her grip suprisingly firm for someone so gentle. “I think Enj likes that idea,” she laughed as the dog jumped to the floor and shot into her office, coming out moments later dragging his lead like a snake behind him.
Lt. Janvier, CMO
“Ah, seems I gotta watch my words around the little guy…” Crouching down to Enj’s level, Issac ruffled the dog’s ears. “Sorry bud; nap time for me. I’ll see about coming by again soon though.”
Standing, Issac made a brief effort to brush off some of the dog hair from his legs, before accepting the futility of the action. “Oh well… You have a good day, Ma’am.”
With that, Issac smiled warmly at the Chief and Enj, before leaving the sickbay.
