=A= Harris to Lieutenant Janvier… when you have a moment Doctor, would you mind dropping by my office?=A=Harris sat patiently waiting on the young woman to reply.
Harris, CO
=A= Javier here, give me 15 minutes, sir. I have something I want to finish up =A= the doctor replied promptly, staring at the screen readings of the surgery she was almost through with. Technically she was supposed to be off duty, but she’d gotten sick of the endless reports she was slowly working her way through and thought she would pop her head into sickbay to see how the next shift was running, somehow she had ended up being pulled into assisting on a few medical cases. Cue current surgery she had somehow been roped into.
Finishing up took no time at all, and Elaine quickly washed the little spots of blood off her hands and tucked a few stray pieces of hair in behind her ears. Straightening up her uniform, she arrived outside the CO’s office. Even though Harris was expecting her, she pressed the chime to his office anyway, not wanting to skip formalities given she was unsure why she had been summoned.
Lt. (j.g) Janvier, CMO
Harris was halfway through a cup of tea and on his fourth report PAD of the current stack on his desk. He was still getting used to answering his own door, having moved his Yeoman, now Sgt. Jersey Reyes, to her own office a few decks down. Tapping the key on his desk, Harris’ rather cheerful tone greeted her.
“Come on in” Came the Okie accented greeting of the Dresden’s senior officer.
As the door hissed softly open, Janvier would see a now more traditional layout of a Starship Commander’s office… though the awards and photos still lined the walls, the young Marine NonCom that used to have a small office between the Colonel and the Bridge was no longer there. The tiny cubicle of an office removed and returning the space to the full grandeur the designers of the Dreadnought had intended.
A small amused smirk glanced over her face as she compared it. It was different to her own office which was beginning to look more like a dog house with a desk than an actual office. Between Enj’s food, toys, bed and all the fluff he left behind, it sometimes seemed like the place belonged more to Enj than it did to the CMO. It would seem that since she had come aboard, both offices had changed.
Looking up from behind a half dozen stacks of report PADs, the Dresden’s Commanding Officer rose to welcome the ship’s Chief Medical Officer.
“Doc…” The Marine grinned using the age old military adage for medical personnel. “… thank you for coming.” Harris offered his hand.
Elaine grasped the Captains hand and shook it, “No trouble at all, sir” she smiled in turn, thankful she had thought to check her hands before she exited Sickbay. “I needed an excuse to get away from Sickbay and reports.” she inclined her head to his own stack of reports “It seems to be that time of year,”
“Please…” He continued after pleasantries “… grab a seat.” The Marine motioned to one of the comfy looking chairs across from him.
“How long have you been serving on the Dresden now, Dr. Janvier?” Harris asked with a soft smile.
Harris, CO
The doctor took a seat in the chair she had been directed towards. The chair felt just as comfy as it looked, or maybe it was simply the chance to sit down, but she felt herself relaxing almost subconsciously into it. Her brow furrowed in thought at the Captains question, her mind racing backwards in time, past the last mission, back to when she first stood in this same office, about to embark on her first DH position. “A little over a year now, I believe,” she said, the gave a slight nod to herself. “Yes. A year.”
“That’s around what I was thinking.” The Colonel said with a soft smile. “A lot has happened in those weeks and months, lots of change and lots of challenges.”
She had been young, only three years out of the Acadamy, and she hadn’t known a soul on the ship. Her only friend had been the ever faithful Enj. It had only been a short space of time, but so much had changed, she was a little less green, she had made friends and gained all kinds of memories both good and bad. She couldn’t pinpoint exactly when but at some point in time the Dresden had become home.
Lt. (j.g.) Janvier, CMO
The Marine paused for a moment, taking a moment to reflect on the young woman across from him. She was young… God, had he ever been /that/ young… but damn good at her job and as he contemplated the coming moments, Harris knew without a doubt he was making the right choice.
“One of the most important positions on a starship, Elaine, is the job of Chief Medical Officer.” The Marine began, the use of her first name clearly both deliberate but respectful. “It takes a lot of maturity to take on the kind of responsibility that currently falls on your shoulders.” Speaking with a tone that sounded very much like pride, he continued. “The last year would have pushed even some of the most experienced medical professionals in Starfleet to the brink of breaking under the pressure, but you… you Dr. Janvier… have been one of the most reliable Medical Officers I had ever had the privilege to serve with over the past nearly 20 years.”
A slight pink tinge took Elaines cheeks at the compliment. It was true that the past year was one of the toughest year she’d had to face in Starfleet yet. But she had attributed it all down to her own lack of experience, and the responsibility that she had undertaken as a Department Head. With every challenge she’d been faced she’d just done what she thought Dr Naural (her mentor on the Ixlilton) would have done. To have her work be noticed and praised by the Captain of all people, wasn’t something she had ever expected. She fiddled with the cuff of her uniform, unsure how she should respond.
There was a sparkle in his eye, a genuine warmth to his words and demeanor. “Not only have you excelled at everything I have asked of you, but you have literally put my ass back together and watched over this crew like we were your family. To that, I say… well done Doctor… well done indeed.”
That elected a small laugh from Elaine, the Captain certainly had a knack for finding trouble. “Thank you sir but…” the words I was only doing my duty died on her lips as Harris moved.
Harris then removed two Federation Blue folios from his desk drawer and two small boxes on top of them. After they were safely atop the desk, Harris rose from his chair and in a more formal tone said. “Lieutenant Junior Grade Elaine Janvier, please rise.”
Slowly, as if in a dream, Elaine stood up, standing to attention. Her heart feeling unnaturally loud in her own ears. If she was right about what was inside the boxes… she pushed the thought away. Instead she focused on tracking the Colonels movement with her eyes.
Stepping around the table, Harris motioned to Elaine to face him and the Marine looked down at the young doctor with unabashed pride.
“Lieutenant Junior Grade Elaine Janvier…” He began, reading from the first folio. “… in consideration of your outstanding service as Chief Medical Officer, USS Dresden, and in light of the personal recommendation of your Commanding Officer, Colonel Calvin Alexander Harris, as of this date… by order of Starfleet Medical Command and Starfleet Headquarters, you are here by promoted to the rank of Lieutenant… with all the rights and privileges thereunto.”
With that, Harris opened the smaller of the boxes, a blue velvet box containing a single solid gold pip. Harris stepped forward, expertly removed the hollow pip of a JG and replaced it with the solid gold pip.
“You earned this Elaine… congratulations.” He said softly before stepping back and rendering likely the most crisp salute the young doctor had ever seen.
Harris, CO
Still trying process the last couple of moments, Elaine was slightly slower to return Harris’s salute. It wasn’t as crisp as his had been, though she doubted anyone besides Harris could salute that well.
As she lowered her hand she gently let her fingers brush the new pip that made her a Lieutenant. “Th-thank you sir,” she said, a polite pleased smile settling on her features. A part of her still felt like this was all a dream. Like she could wake up at any moment. Although she had already been promoted once before, for some reason this one felt different. Perhaps it was because her last promotion had
“You’ll never make it without me Elaine,” for some reason Fraisers harsh words from their breakup came back into her mind “I made you. You won’t survive without me, but the words didn’t seem so hurtful anymore. Not when she had come so much further than anyone had ever expected of her. She’d always just focused on her work. Promotions, had never worried her the way they bothered Fraiser. For her, Starfleet was all about helping people, not racing to see who would become Captain first. All the same it was a nice feeling knowing that without even trying her work had been noticed… and appreciated. She had done more than survive like Fraiser had said, she had thrived.
Unable to help herself, she touched the new pip again, as if she couldn’t believe that it was really there. The smile on her face widened as the excitement within her grew and the news began to sink in. “Thank you,” she said again, her voice slightly different to usual, “I… just… uh…” she trailed off at a loss of words. “It is an honour.”
Lt. Janvier, CMO
“The honour, Lieutenant, was all mine.” Harris smiled warmly as he reached for the other folio and the larger box, sitting the latter on the edge of the desk. “Lieutenant Elaine Louise Janvier, M.D., Chief Medical Officer, USS Dresden NCC-1837-D…” Harris began as he opened the folio with a bit more flare than with her promotion moments before, his eyes barely glancing at the crisp paper before him, instead locked on Elaine’s expression. “… in recognition of exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services given on Stardate 71900.5 which resulted in the saving of the life of Colonel Calvin Alexander Harris, SMFC, Commanding Officer, USS Dresden… you are hereby awarded the Legion of Honor, with the Legionnaire rank of Commander. Given by my hand on this date in Paris. Signed… Eloise Chambers, President, United Federation of Planets.”
Snapping the folio shut, Harris placed it on the desk and picked up the other box. As he opened the lid, Elaine would see for the first time the medal and crimson ribbon drape… /her/ medal… in the centuries old design carried over from the Old Earth French Legion of Honor. The Marine carefully unsnapped the removable pinning clip and pinning the drape opposite Elaine’s CommBadge.
Wake up Elaine you’re dreaming the doctor thought to herself, a promotion was one thing after a year of service was one thing, but a Legion of Honour too boot? It all seemed too unrealistic to not be a dream. But a subtle pinch of the palm of her hand as the Captain decorated her uniform, told her she was very much awake. Everything around her seemed to happen simutatiously slowly and fast at the time.
Stepping back, Harris rendered another crisp salute and smiled wider than Elaine had ever witnessed. “You are a fantastic physician, Doctor Janvier, and I can’t think of a more deserving soul for that honor. Congratulations.”
Harris, CO
Elaine promptly returned the salute, as formalities ordained. “Thank you Captain,” she said softly, before all the emotion she was feeling overcame her. It was a lot of information for her to take in at once. A promotion, a Legion of Honour and both presented to her personally presented to her by the Captain himself. He had recommended that she be bestowed with such a high honour. Her cheeks suddenly felt wet, and with shock she realised she was crying. “I’m sorry,” she apologised hastily, wiping away fresh tears with her fingers, “This is-” she started but choked on the next word. She stopped trying to talk and took a deep breath to reign her emotions in. They were getting the better of her like an emotional teenager, and not the professional she was supposed to be.
“Sorry,” she repeated again, with a short nervous laugh, feeling more than a little foolish. “I just need a moment to process. I wasn’t expecting anything like this so…” another breath “It’s a lot to take in.”
After a couple of moments and a few more deep breaths, Janviers emotions quickly returned back to her control although her eyes still remained misty and her cheeks flushed. “I appreciate the sentiment, sir.” she said once she felt capable, “But all I ever do is what is my duty. I do what any good doctor would do and I look out for my patients. I wasn’t looking or expecting a reward as wonderful as this for any of it. The Dresden is my home and her crew is my family. I would do anything in my power to look after her, her crew and her Captain. But I haven’t done anything more than what anybody else would have done in my shoes. I never thought-” She stopped, looked up and blinked, “Well I just didn’t expect something like this.” she finished lamely wondering if, perhaps, she had said to much.

OOC: just a small bump for when I can get back to it. :)
