I hope I am not overstepping
Well, you sure clean up quite nice fer a man who was in cuffs just a bit ago.” A dry, accented voice announced a presence off to Ensign Reed’s side.
Issac had seen the disheveled Mr. Reed being escorted throughout the ship earlier, and had his curiosity aroused enough to seek him out once he was finished with his shift for the day. He couldn’t imagine that it was a common occurrence for new crew members, much less junior officers (as Ensign Reed appeared to be) to be led aboard in cuffs.
“Pockets, eh? Now that’s a damn fine addition to the uniform in my book, but Starfleet’s book may suggest otherwise. Not my call or business either way though; even if I was on duty right now.” Issac had by this point ambled over closer to Ensign Reed, within easy talking distance.
“Name’s Issac Forgrave; Ensign, Security. Coffee?” Issac held out a steaming mug of black coffee at arms length, with a inquiring but friendly expression on his face.
“If I’m not interrupting you, that is. Not my intention to run ya into trouble with yer Chief on day one.”
Ensign Issac Forgrave, Security
‘We are already off on the wrong foot, Mr. Forgrave. I don’t think you can make it any worse, infact a cup of coffee would make my day much better! Besides most of the transports are automated and inspection, logging I can almost do in my sleep.’ Replied the older Man. “Folks on the Vigilance called me Stores, unless I was in trouble” the last accompanied buy a wry smile and a dry chuckle. “ mind you stay behind the yellow line” as another grave pallet of micro Photon casings materialized 2m away.Clinton “Stores” Reed, Supercargo
OOC: (out of character) No worries; just fine to change the topic line/location. I looks like you can change it when you reply to a post as well.
IC: (in-character)
“Ha! Can’t say I’ve been in too many spots where coffee made things worse, that’s for sure. Help yourself; there’s more in the thermos.” Issac gestured to a large flask hanging off his shoulder. “Stores, eh? Ain’t the worst name I recall getting thrown about, that’s for sure. Beats ‘Asshole,’ at least. Oh, and Issac’s just fine.”
Issac shuffled a bit at the mention of the safety line “Yeah, I’ve got my eyes on that line. Holler at me if I’m in the way; it won’t offend me none. Leastwise it’d offend me less than havin’ to haul myself down to sickbay ‘cause I got run over like a fool.”
“So, iffin’ ya don’t mind my sayin, it seems a bit unusual fer a man to be brought aboard his new station in cuffs, just to be released again. I’ve not seen any memos regarding a prisoner transfer or anything, so I suppose you’re here honestly enough.”
Issac took a long drink from his mug, his eyebrows turning the statement into a question.Ensign Forgrave, Security
Taking the proffered mug “ I was working as a gang boss directing the loading and unloading of cargo at the station when I had a disagreement with an Andorian captain over his place in the que, it ended badly” as Stores turned and secured the pallett. “It isn’t getting ran over in here, I would be woried about as another pallet materialized.
Clinton “Stores” Reed, Supercargo
“I suppose one way or another, it ends poorly for damn fools standin’ where they ain’t supposed to. I happen to be quite fond of my current limb configuration so I’ll try to stand well clear.” Issac moved a bit further away from the working area. “Well, looks like you were doing a fine enough job, least good enough to get brought out here. Seems like they got a use for people what don’t let others cut in line.” Taking another sip of coffee, “Sure seems like you got a good eye for cargo storage at least. I’ve never been much of one for those grav jacks.”
Ensign Issac Forgrave, Security
“I grew up on a freighter, even surfed a few grave pallets in my day” Stores grinned” At least till she went down during the war, but I Served on a on a federation escort ‘till they scrapped her” Stores checking the PADD, and signaling the next transporter sequence.
“ so what Is young Issac’s story?” As he strode over and picked up the thermos and refilled his mug.Clinton “Stores” Reed, Supercargo
Issac eyed up the grav jacks warily. “I’ll uh, take your word on surfing those things.”
Shaking his head, he continued “My story’s nothing so dramatic as all that. Raised on Terra, I grew up with my folks in Southeastern U-S-A; North Carolina if ya follow. My dad raised me workin’ on antique engines and stuff - he ran a shop for doing exactly that. Ended up doing business with a couple museums too. Anyways, I went to college, studied historical engineering, and came back home to help with the business full time. Dad died a couple years later, and come to find out, damn near the whole business was just floating along on credit.”
Issac delivered the last line with a fair bit of venom on his tongue, clearly bitter over the past still. Taking a long sip of coffee, he calmed enough to continue the story. “Well, it took a while with some lawyers and accountants, but I eventually got it sorted out. Ended up getting rid of most everything, ‘cept a chunk of stuff that was either mine or that I just didn’t want to part with. At that time, I sure didn’t know what I wanted to do, other than not be there. My sister suggested Starfleet; she’s working on a exploration ship I think; I’ll be damned if I can remember which one though…” Issac trailed off as he searched his memory.
“Ah it don’t matter. She put the bug in my ear and that’s all it took. Next week I put my application in and I shipped out as soon as I could. Ended up in Security; I looked at Engineering, but I’m hung up on antiques - I just can’t hold enough interest on this stuff to really pursue it” Issac gestured vaguely around the cargo bay. “Finished up with academy just this year; Dresden’s my first posting. Ain’t been here long, but it’s sure growing on me.”“Freighter in the uh, Dominion war? Sounds like you’ve been ‘round the galaxy and back.” Issac raised his eyebrows, clearly impressed. “Suppose the Federation was keen on keeping you around.”
Ensign Forgrave, Security
“Seen more than my fair share, I assure you” Stores said with a grimace,” I think my old Boss had somthing to do with this, I understand they made the damn fool Admiral or some such” shaking his head, “truth is I ain’t much use anywhere else but a ship, born in space, took my fist steps and played with burned out parts for toys “ taking a gulp of lookwarm coffee to hide the fact he was tearing up, but the tremor in his hand gives him away.
After a moment, Stores cracks a grin, “hey did teach you you basic transporter operations right?” As stores steps over to the cargo transporter controls. “I could use a hand transporting on a few tonns of goop. Transporting the stuff into the tanks is a bit tricky.”Clinton “Stores” Reed, Supercargo
“I suppose all of us are out here for a reason; good or bad it’s our lot to make the most of it.” Issac commented with a shrug. Freeing his hands, he moved to assist at the controls. While Issac had noticed the small tremor, he saw no reason to bring it up. Everyone has a past, and it’s rarely glamorous.
“Yeah, I got run through the basics in academy. It’s been a little while, so if you think I’m overlookin’ anything or about to make a mistake, sing out right quick.”
Issac took a quick moment to gently run his fingers over the controls, re-acquainting himself with their orientation and layout. Nothing unusual here, but it never hurt to double-check. “I believe I’m ready if you are, Stores.” Issac’s forehead had furrowed slightly in concentration, and he was looking carefully over the screens and cargo area.Ensign Forgrave, Security.
“Relax, brother” Stores chuckled, “a second set of eyes makes this go easier is all” with a few deft sweeps of the controls “There, now the boss can have his morning coffee and a fresh uniform”
Checking the chrono on his heads up display, “Well time for my union break” With a big toothy grin, Stores finds a confortable spot on the edge of a pallet. “Let’s have another cup of joe”“Fair enough; though I’ll admit you’d got me thinkin’ about the likelihood of transporter accidents” Issac said with a grin.
“Coffee, eh? I daresay one of man’s finer inventions. I’d be glad to share another cup with ya; though I probably ought to mosey along ‘fore much longer. I’ve been told there’s a gym on deck 12, and I wanted to have a go at it before chow time.”
Issac moved next to Stores on the pallet, pouring another cup of coffee for both men before sitting.
“Somehow the thermos is never deep enough; but at least the company’s good!” Issac chuckled as he raised his mug, toasting the older man.Ensign Forgrave, Security
“Here’s to good company” Stores chuckled. “As to transporter accidents, all it takes is a little faith” said with a wink<
Clinton “stores” Reed
“Bah, transporter accidents - my old man raised me on stories of them. Used to tell me in the early days, people would arrive without any innards or bones.” Issac shuddered, remembering old horror stories. “Once I got into the academy, I spent… more time than I’d really care to admit researching transporters and their history. Seems like it was just a persistent urban legend, but damned if I still don’t get a hair nervous around them!” A dry chuckle followed.
“All that mess was part of why I went for security. The engineering’s interesting, but I’m happier with simpler things. Heh, like good coffee!” Issac grinned, downing the last of his mug. “Brewed it myself; I can live with the replicators, but fresh made just tastes better to me.”
