(Snip)Hannibal stood back up and got the young ensign a glass of water. He himself some tea and returned to his desk. He sat handed the glass of water to the ensign then sat down.
“Tell me, is it better to ask forgiveness or permission?” he asked as he sat, taking a sip from his tea.

Wiles leaned forward to accept the glass of water with a nod of his head in thanks, then sat back as he sipped it lightly. At the lieutenant’s question, Ensign Osten opened his mouth as if to speak, closed it, then opened it again as he formulated his answer. “I tend to believe that both have their place. Asking permission implies you have trust in someone else’s judgement and asking forgiveness implies you have trust in your own judgement. If you feel like you can do one and not the other, your confidence in either yourself or the other person is lacking.”

Hannibal looked at the Ensign for a moment, considering his answer. “Are their situations where one is preferred over the other?” He asked curously, taking a sip of tea.

“Well certainly,” Wiles responded while glancing up to the ceiling in thought. “But I think it’s very dependent on context. Maybe it’s based on a gut feeling, intuition if you will.” Wiles shrugged. “Ideally, it wouldn’t matter in the end. Whether you trust the other or yourself, hopefully the judgement you defer to is sound enough to ensure a good outcome.”

Hannibal nodded for a moment in thought, then sat up and looked at something on his computer, pressing a few buttons to pull up a file.
“I have you assigned to security division 3. You are the division officer for your division. You will have 33 security officers under your command. You will be responsible for all security measures from decks 16 through 24.” He explained turning to look at Osten. “I have weekly security meetings with all my division officers, and my door is always open should you need it. Chief Murry is your division Chief and NE Astin is your assistant Division officer. You division is free to be run as you see fit, provided manning requirements is met.”

Upon the moment of silence and Lieutenant Ashur’s abrupt change of topic, Wiles’ jaw tightened as a flash of concern that he may have said the wrong thing crossed his mind. But as the chief of security continued to list Ensign Osten’s new duties, Wiles’ jaw loosened almost to the point of falling open, which he barely managed to prevent from happening. Instinctively, Wiles straightened in his chair, eyes widening slightly as Lieutenant Ashur continued to name his new responsibilities.
“Understood, sir,” Osten said with a swell in his chest. “I will rendezvous with Chief Murray and Ensign Astin promptly. I’m honored that you have such confidence in me, and I assure you that your confidence it is not misplaced.” Wiles paused as he took a second to process his assignment, recalling that decks 16 through 24 housed the majority of the Dresden’s weapons and propulsion systems, as well as main engineering. “I’ll also request a meeting with Lieutenant Commander Losc to introduce myself. Do you have any advice for how to approach integrating into the role of officer for security division three?”
(Ensign Osten, Security Division Three Officer)

“I would listen to those who have experience. These are your people now. Take care of them, be firm, but fair. Listen and understand, help them if you can, but remember the ship comes first.” He said, taking his last sip of tea.

Wiles nodded with a serious expression, acknowledging the weight of his new responsibilities. “Understood, Lieutenant. Thank you for your advice, and again for your trust. I am excited to get started.”
(Ensign Osten, Security Division Three Officer)
Hannibal smiled “You can expect a security drill soon, to get your team and your team working together.” He set his tea cup down. “Do you have any questions for me?” He asked.
