Katie gave Chavez a sympathetic smile despite how much her mouth was watering at his description. “That’s the life of Starfleet,” she observed, quietly. “It’s something that a lot of people struggle with the most, but thankfully, we do have so much technology to stay in contact. But, sometimes, it’s just not the same as an in person visit when your family needs you the most.” She looked down at her emptying glass and swirled the last bit of liquid at the bottom meditatively. “Do you have any other family?”

“No, it had always been just her and I. My parents both passed shortly after my birth, though my grandmother never told my how. I know she always worried about me after I joined Starfleet. Even during most of my absent years I still found a way to reach out and let her know I was alright, but the last couple years must’ve been the hardest for her as I could do nothing. The best of technology wouldn’t have helped in this case, as I was on Earth but not allowed to be there, not even for her funeral.”

Domingo drained the rest of his glass and waved over the waiter, “Real tequila please, straight up.”

Katie shook her head slightly, pained on his behalf at the lack of humanity shown to prisoners and their family. She mimicked his action, drinking the rest of the imitation alcohol beverage. As Chavez placed his order, she raised an eyebrow and offered a shrug to the server when he turned his attention to see if she wanted something else to drink. “I guess I’ll have what he’s having,” she responded, then looked at Chavez as he left. “I’ll have you know that I’ve never had real tequila,” she commented, her tone lightened to try to bring the mood back up from her slightly prying question. “I’m trusting you here.”

Domingo rubbed his thumb across Katie’s hand again and grinned, “I appreciate the trust. I just hope the stock they have is decent.”

The waiter returned with shot glasses, three for each person, and lines them up in front of Katie and Domingo before leaving them in peace.

Domingo blinks at the shots and then shrugs, “I guess tequila straight would be best in shots, since it’s not really a sipping drink.”

He lifted one of the shot glasses and took a sniff, not that it helped him identify a brand. With a grin and a wink he knocked back the shot and enjoyed the slight burn trailing down his throat.
