Ensign Osten stood outside of Lt. Ashur’s office on deck ten of the Dresden and stared blank-eyed at the door a couple inches away from his face. He was excited to start his new assignment, of course. But Wiles was also nervous about what information from the Potterfield mission on the Challenger had followed him to the Dresden. He expected to discuss it, of course. But he hoped it was not the sole first impression he was able to make with him new senior officer.

Blinking a couple times as he snapped out of his internal machinations, Wiles made sure to stand up taller, run a hand through his short blonde hair, and hold his chin up a little higher as he pressed the chime on Lt. Ashur’s door.

=^=Enter=^= Came the reply to the chime.

Pacing behind a desk near the back of the room stood a man of average height and weight. He had tan skin with jet black hair, but otherwise had no distinguishing features about him. He held a padd in his hand as he paced, deep in thought. The padd turned over in his hand as he paced. He took a quick glance at the ensign who walked in, before continuing his pacing.

“Yes Ensign?”

Osten paused in the doorway as it hissed open. His hands clasped behind his back upon seeing the chief of security, and his eyes traced the lieutenant’s pacing for a second. The movement did nothing to calm Osten’s own nerves. “Ensign Osten, sir,” he announced, “I was recently transferred from the Challenger, I was intending to check in with you for your review and orders, but… I can come back at another time if I’m interrupting.” Wiles glanced at the PaDD curiously.

“No ensign, you’re fine, come in.” He said, tossing the padd onto his desk. He gestured to a seat. “Welcome to the Dresden. How was your transfer?” He asked, curiously, his middle eastern accent coming through.

Wiles unsuccessfully attempted to resist the urge to glance again at the PaDD as it thunked onto the desk. He walked forward stiffly and perched in one of the chairs Ashur had motioned to. “Thank you, Lieutenant. It was rather uneventful, to be honest. But I am honored to be aboard,” Wiles said with a measured formality, “I’ve heard great things about the ship and its crew. Yourself included.”

(Ensign Osten, Security)

“Great things huh, about this ship I can buy that, but about me, I find that hard to believe.” He replied sadly. Hannibal came over and sat down at his chair. “I apologize, I should be more professional. Welcome aboard the Dresden.” He greeted, in a professional and calm manner. “The reports from the Challenger were most impressive, everyone there seems to think very highly of you.” Hannibal stated warmly, he knew that the new ensign was trying to take a peak at the padd. All he could see was a letter from star fleet Judiciary, appeal to court marshal.

Wiles’ ears burned as he realized his nosiness had caused him to see something that perhaps he was not supposed to be privy to. He averted his eyes quickly, having no desire to snoop further now that he knew the report was not about him. And the confirmation that a good report had been passed along from the Challenger definitely made Wiles feel more at ease. Hannibal’s self-degrading comment barely registered in the freshly-minted Ensign’s mind.

“Can I get you something to drink?” He asked, studying the ensign.

“Oh, a glass of water would be nice, thank you,” Wiles responded as he settled into the chair. Nerves always made his mouth dry. Hannibal’s inspection would reveal a medium-height, fair-skinned human man with short blonde hair styled in a slight poof in the front. He sat with one leg crossed over the other at the thigh, hands clasped around his raised knee as he leaned forward with a straightened back.

Hannibal stood back up and got the young ensign a glass of water. He himself some tea and returned to his desk. He sat handed the glass of water to the ensign then sat down.

“Tell me, is it better to ask forgiveness or permission?” he asked as he sat, taking a sip from his tea.
