Domingo’s eyes focused intently on Katie, her figure the only thing visible in the reflection of his pupils. He took a deep breath in with a slight shudder before letting it out gently. Forcing his hands to unclench from the table’s edge, Domingo placed both on top of the table while extending one out to tentatively grasp Katie’s hand.

“Thank you. When it’s a room full of people and I’m on duty it’s much easier to slip into that role of security officer. When I’m just me, I don’t know what to do.”

Katie’s small hand wrapped around Chavez and she applied firm pressure to it, trying to ground him to their interaction. She softly repeated her previous words to focus on her, but they were soon interrupted by the server returning with their beverages. Keeping one hand around his, she gratefully accepted her own, taking a small test sip as a happy smile came over her features. Her attention was quickly returned to Chavez, however, as she studied him and his drink with interest.

Domingo’s focus shifted to the server and the arrival of their drinks, with his attention diverted anxiety and hyper-awareness began to creepy back in. His breathing quickened for just a beat until the firm grip on his hand brought him back to focus, which returned upon Katie and he watched her sip her drink. The way the glass and liquid played upon her lips drew him in, making him unconsciously wet his own, until she looked at him in interest and his reverie was broken. Not wanting to rudely stare, and embarrassed by his startling lack of control, Domingo lifted his own glass and took a sip of his refreshing drink.

Clearing his throat and attempting to center his emotions, Domingo asked, “How is your drink?”
