The small smile remained on her face as Katie watched Chavez’s change in body language and then forced change back develop in front of her eyes. She leaned forward, resting her elbows just above her knees as she listened to his reply. As his voice trailed off, she reached her right hand forward, gently placing it on his left knee and squeezing in a comforting manner. She let it rest there as she remarked, “of course part of my job is to ensure that you are professionally fit for duty, Ensign, but your personal life matters as well. I can’t begin to imagine how the last several years of your life have impacted you – and not just because your file is remarkably blank in some places.” She paused, one side of her lips turning up slightly more in a small smirk.

An idea flashed through her mind as she gave his knee a final squeeze and then leaned back against the back of the sofa she occupied. Pondering the man in front of her, she continued after a few moments, “you’re going to have a lot more freedom to get used to here on the Dresden. Do you plan to keep up with your meditation? How else do you think you’ll spend your free time when you’re off duty?”

Lt Cmdr Nunn, CNS

“I’m planning on taking advantage of the gym pretty heavily while continuing to meditate, but maybe not as heavily with the meditation. As for what else to do when I’m free… well, I’m not really sure. I haven’t really met anyone outside of an official capacity and don’t really know where to start.” Domingo responded while looking a little lost.

Ensign Chavez, Sec

Katie listened closely to Chavez, both with professional and personal curiosity. Her finger found its way back to her lips as she tapped on her bottom lip for a beat. She looked hesitant for a few moments, but then suddenly, her posture changed slightly to belay more confidence. “I could use some more information about meditation,” she commented and paused, studying his face for a few moments. “I’m pretty new here, too. You can impart your wisdom and then we can find a drink somewhere.” The offer might twinge a bit toward unprofessional, but supporting the crew was her job and she wanted Chavez to feel welcomed and valued. If she got to spend some time with him, outside of the confines of her office, that was a side benefit.

Lt Cmdr Nunn, CNS

Domingo’s eyes narrowed during Katie’s proposition before seemingly glittering with gratitude. He recognized her attempt to help him ease back in to the social pool and felt as if a burden had been lifted from him.

“I would like that Counselor. It’s been a long time since I’ve had a drink with someone, much less someone as pretty as you, if you don’t mind my saying.” Domingo grinned wryly.
