“I suppose I do.” Domingo responded with a quick nod before drinking a bit more tea.

Katie watched Chavez go through the motions of sipping the tea and mimicked his with her own, allowing his statement to stand as a final statement for a few moments. After studying him for a few moments, she asked, “why do you think that is?”

“I imagine it’s the usual stressors; wanting to do the best job I can, getting used to life aboard a ship again, having peoples’ lives tangentially under my responsibility, and remembering that I’m no longer in a position to lead but must follow.” Domingo stated rather matter-of-factly.

Domingo’s Starfleet records would show a long period of service before being posted aboard the Dresden. He had first started with Starfleet aboard the USS Andorian before its decommissioning and crew transfer to the USS Merlin. He had been COS aboard the Merlin before being promoted to the XO position and the rank of Commander. Curiously there is a four year period in his records that are completely blank, either sealed or completely expunged. The next record before being assigned to the Dresden was a three year period of administrative discipline and isolated confinement on Earth. After release his rank had been busted down to Ensign and Domingo was given the option of assisting at the Academy or going back to a ship.

Katie simply nodded for a moment, her mind cycling back through the quick review of Chavez’s record that she had done after meeting him in Sickbay. She continued to contemplate for a few minutes before asking softly, “how does that feel, Ensign? Following, now, instead of leading?”
