Charlie stifled a yawn as she had pulled yet another night shift this week. Truth be told, she quite liked the peacefulness that usually accompanied the graveyard shift and seen as sleep had eluded her in more recent weeks, she was glad to be useful. She picked up a padd and did the rounds on her two patients to check all was well. Ensign Porter was still sleeping off the aftereffects of Ankaran flu in an isotropic restraint after getting a little handsy with Nurse Chatten in his earlier fevered state. Truth be told the restraint was a little overboard but they were a little short staffed and it had seemed like the easiest and quickest way to reign in the flirtatious young man. As Charlie approached the bed, Porter started muttering about some lady named Hilda who apparently had the restraints too tight. She gave a little giggle as she checked his vitals were still stable and moved on to the next patient.Lt Simmonds was the only other patient in sickbay. She had unfortunately taken a blow to the head from a hapless Ensign with no spatial awareness and was resting after a nasty concussion. As Charlie flipped open her tricorder to check the swelling was going down, the young Lt’s eyes fluttered open and winced as she peered at the doc. Charlie put a reassuring hand on her shoulder and loaded a hypospray with the other hand. “Sssh, it’s alright Lt, you took a bit of a knock, you’re in sickbay, just rest…” she reassured as she gently pressed the hypo into the woman’s neck and dosed her with painkiller and sedative. Simmonds’ expression eased as she fell back into a deep slumber with a contented smile. Charlie set the hypospray back down and had a quick stretch before making her way back towards the office.
Just as she smiled and nodded to herself that it was going to be a nice easy shift, she was suddenly flung through the doors of the office and slammed into the desk, crumbling to the floor as the first explosion violently coarsed through the ship. She gasped as she sat up and felt a sharp pain in her side but gritted her teeth and pulled herself up carefully on the chair. She winced as she took a couple of deep breaths but pushed the pain to the back of her mind and quickly made her way out into sickbay to check on the patients. She knew she would likely get an influx of casualties momentarily so checked on her existing patients before the storm. Thankfully Ensign Porter was oblivious as he was drugged to the eyeballs and the isotropic restraint had protected him from injury but she as she panned around to Simmonds her blood ran cold. The young Lt lay motionless a good 15 feet away from her bed, face down on the deck. Charlie stumbled over to her as another series of explosions rocked the ship. Finally making it across the room, she rolled the young woman over and pulled out her tricorder. A pair of haunting, lifeless eyes frozen in fear stared back at her as Charlie felt a tear trickle down her cheek and she flipped the tricorder shut again knowing it was too late. A cold shiver went down her spine as she gently closed the woman’s eyes and pulled a sheet from the nearest bed to lay over her. Resting against the bulkhead for a brief moment she wanted to mourn the loss but she knew sickbay would be flooded with injured crew any minute. She swallowed the lump in her throat and crawled across to the nearest console, awaiting the emergency calls to come in. She initiated the emergency protocol calling all staff with any medical training to sickbay and gritted her teeth to fight back the tears as she tapped her comm badge.
=/\= Sickbay to Bridge, emergency protocols initiated, we are awaiting casualties… =/\= she said in a pained voice, unable to hide the fear and pain in her voice.

It was mere moments before the doors opened to admit the first stumbling casualties. A young lieutenant was dragged in with plasma burns so severe that his uniform was welded to his scorched flesh across his left side. The two young crewmen dragging him in hardly seemed in better shape. One collapsed immediately, his breath coming in rasping gulps as he tried to suck oxygen through his punctured lung, his lips turning blue. The other was a glassy eyed young woman, barely out of her teens, blood matting her platinum blonde hair to her forehead, a deep laceration across her right shoulder slowly pulsing a stream of blood as her heart began to slow… And behind them, 5, 6, 7, 10, 12, 16 more, dragging, stumbling, limping, glassy eyed, hollow cheeked and haunted. Lacerations, burns, smoke inhalation, broken bones, blunt force trauma across the board. Worse, commlines were flooded with screaming, pleading requests for medical assistance from far and wide across the ship… This was only the beginning… What was odd was the two officers slumped against a wall with impact burns that were clearly the result of weapons fire.

Charlie stood in horror for a split second as the casualties came pouring through the door. She was still the ranking doctor on scene so she knew she had to take control. Taking a deep breath she quickly pulled Nurse Bigalow over & Medic Kaminsky. “I need all available nurses on triage and stabilisation, assess as quickly as you can, prioritize the life threatening cases and send them to me, Kaminsky I need you to take the walking wounded & less serious patients to cargo bay 2 and set up an emergency overflow…” she said as she pulled up damage reports. “Ok, scratch that, there are hull breaches on deck 19, better make it cargo bay 6. Any questions?” she asked with an air of authority. Both shook their heads and sprang into action, knowing that every second was precious. As the nurses quickly got to work on triaging patients, Charlie quickly made her way over to the crewman who was rapidly turning blue. “Computer, activate Emergency Medical Hologram!” she ordered as she tried to pick the young man up and gasped as pain shot through her side, nearly dropping him. “Alan!” she hollered to another medic who had just walked into the carnage. “Give me a hand will you?” she asked in a pained voice as her colleague quickly came to her aid.
Alan grabbed the crewman’s legs and helped Charlie lift him onto the bed. He raised an eyebrow as he saw the pained expression on the young woman’s face. “Are you alright doc?” he asked in a concerned voice. Charlie shook her head as she flipped open her tricorder and quickly scanned the crewman. “Not really, but I’m a darn sight better than this lot…” she replied as she picked up a laserscalpal and made an incision in the man’s chest.

Bigalow immediately began barking orders as Kaminsky scurried off and began rounding up the other medics, dispersing into the corridors to begin triaging. Bigalow established a perimeter at the entrance to the main intake ward to reduce the congestion so what few Doctors appeared could begin the more serious surgeries and treatments . The doors to the surgical and recovery wings were locked open and nurses began secondary treatment protocols for the less seriously injured as the more serious began a more organized entry into the main intake ward. Bigalow rolled her eyes as the familiar form of the EMH Mark IV appeared in the main entryway “Please state the nature of the medical emergency!” - spoken with a little more aplomb and sympathy than its predecessors, it was nevertheless still a somewhat robotic introduction. Bigalow ordered the EMH to stand guardian and flush the patients that came through the doors from triage to their appropriate departments. The EMH nodded sympathetically, a completely disingenuous and artificial voice acknowledging her order. Bigalow then moved into the corridor to take charge of primary triage as she hustled some of the overflow out of main intake and back into the corridors and storage rooms.
At the rear of the main sickbay corridor, the doors juddered before parting with a loud snap, revealing the huddled form of their ships counsellor.
The diagnostics of the patient in front of her showed two ruptures to his left lung, three cracked ribs and one completely broken that had pierced his spleen.

With one hand in the patient’s chest, she swore under her breath as Alan showed her the scan results. She knew she only had minutes before this poor man bled to death so she worked as quickly as she could. She located the broken rib and skillfully extracted it, making sure not to damage the spleen further. “Suction,” she ordered, not taking her eyes off the wound. Alan quickly cleared the area of blood so Charlie could get a good look at the injury. She ran another scan to determine whether she needed to remove the spleen or if she could just suture it before she repaired the broken ribs and lacerations to the lung. “How’s he doing Alan?” she asked as she waited for the scan results to come through.

It took a few moments before the lump of counselor uncurled itself in the Turbolift and cautiously looked up, sincerely hoping that it was still all part of the nightmare that she had been disturbed from. It wasn’t. In fact, she briefly wished she had kept her head down as she took in the scene in sickbay around her. Stumbling to her feet, she brushed blood and sweat matted hair from her face and shuffled toward a familiar doctor.
“Charlie, what can I do to help?” she questioned in a tone that could only be described as a whimper as she once again glanced around the bustling room. Her face was ashen and she was visibly trembling where she stood.
Lt Cmdr Nunn, CNS
Charlie breathed a sigh of relief as she heard the familiar voice of the counselor and turned to greet her. “You look like I feel…” she said as she noticed the injury to the counselor’s head, beckoning young Nurse Michaels over. As Michaels ran a quick scan to make sure there was nothing more serious than the laceration, Charlie quickly cast her eye around sickbay. She clocked the young woman who had brought the burn victim in with her current patient who looked like she was about to pass out. Charlie picked up a spare tricorder with her free hand and passed it to Katie. “Sorry counselor, I know this isn’t your area of expertise but I need all hands on deck, please could you scan the young woman in the corner and bring me the results back?” she replied as she glanced at her current patient’s scan results coming through. Deep down she knew that they wouldn’t be able to help all the patients pouring through the doors but she was going to do her damn hardest to save as many as she could. She gulped as her eyes locked with one of the burn victims. She felt a familiar lump begin to rise in the back of her throat but she gritted her teeth and pushed it down again. She felt the sweat began to trickle down her forehead as the pain in her side intensified but took a pained breath and quickly turned her attention back to her patient.

The patient before her was stabilized, for now. His spleen could be repaired with a muscular regenerator and they’d be able to graft tissue and grow a new rib. Blood loss was still a concern.
