Having completed her check in at Sickbay and her psychological evaluation clearance recorded in her service record, Katie made her way to the CO’s office. She hadn’t had as much time as she would have liked to study the records of each of the crew members, so she felt like she was going into this meeting blind. Of course, it had been a while since she had even met with the CO of a starship in the context of reporting for duty, so this was a new situation all around. She had chosen to wear her Starfleet uniform for the occasion, tucking a loose piece of hair back into her braid as she rang the door chime outside Harris’ office.Lt Cmdr Nunn, CNS
Harris was at work behind a pile of PaDDs that covered the large wooden desk, the wall behind him covered with diplomas and awards with the center of the display featuring the TopGun Trophy from his time as a pilot. The Marine was in the traditional Black & Green tunic befitting a senior grade officer of the Starfleet Marine Corps and as the CNS walked in, a striking pair of blue eyes flashed up in greeting and warm smile crossed the man’s face.
“Good morning…” He rose in greeting. “… how can I help you Commander?”
Harris, CO
Katie’s own blue eyes met the CO’s, her friendly, inquisitive nature shining through. She walked into the office once the door was ajar and assumed a loose position of attention in front of the wooden desk. While she was happy to wear her Starfleet uniform, coming to a strict attention stance didn’t become the informality required of her position as counselor. She certainly looked crisp and dutiful, but it didn’t have that extra bit of pizazz some might include.
“Good morning, Colonel,” she replied politely. “I’m Lieutenant Commander Katie Nunn, your new counselor.” Her eyes took a few moments to glance around the room, digesting the evidence of the various parts of Harris’ service record on display and matching them up with what she had already reviewed.

His warm smile remaining on his ruggedly attractive face, Harris motioned to the chair across from him. “Wonderful… please grab a seat Counselor.”
As the Marine settled, he asked flatly the first question he always asked. “So, tell me about yourself, Commander.”
Harris, CO
Katie returned Harris’ friendly smile and made her way to the indicated chair. She sat down, leaning back slightly and placing her arms on the armrests comfortably. Her eyes twinkled as she pondered his question and then she responded, “well, Colonel, I specialized in medical at Starfleet Academy, but I completed my postgraduate training in psychology so that I could transition to the role of counselor. I served in that role for a few years before being attached to Starfleet Legal as a victim advocate. After spending much of my career there, I’m now finding myself back on a starship for the first time in a long time.” She paused for a moment and then grinned slightly impishly. “I’m an avid reader, enjoy a good run, and prefer gin in my spare time,” she added.
Lt Cmdr Nunn, CNS
Harris smiled warmly, a chuckle escaping him. “I wouldn’t take you for a Gin girl, Counselor. I’m more a Bourbon guy myself but never turned down a glass of anything decent!” Motioning to the large bookshelf near the door, full of books… real, physical books… the Marine gave a nod. “I don’t have the time I wished I did to enjoy the collection I’ve amassed over the years, but I’ve been known to crack open a good one every once & a while. Feel free to browse when you’re needing something new to read. You’ll find my tastes are… very broad.”
“So bourbon flights at your psychological evaluation, got it,” Katie responded with a grin and a wink, hoping that the Colonel would catch on that, while she had a bit of a free spirit in her, she was entirely joking. Studying the books filling the shelves in the CO’s office, a longing smile came over her face as she tried to figure out the last time she had paged through a real book. “I will absolutely be taking you up on that,” she finally commented. “I can’t recall the last time I paged through a real book.”
“Fantastic!” He beamed. “Just let me know.” After a pause, Harris asked more directly. “What brought you back to Deep Space Service, Commander?”
Harris, CO
With practiced ease, Katie smiled, although careful study would find this one not as genuine as her previous ones. “A change of pace, sir,” she responded firmly. Her desire not to discuss that further led her to want to turn the meeting around on the CO and ask him a question, but bravely, she paused to see if he had any follow up. The time for questioning him would come soon enough when he needed to complete his required evaluation.

Harris caught the pause immediately, his Intelligence background kicking into high gear before Cal slammed it back down. Inside, he ached to know what the issue was but honestly… it hadn’t a damn thing to do with Katie’s job and he wasn’t going to start their working together pissing the woman off to pry unnecessarily. Hell… Harris chuckled softly as the thought that she was one of two people on board that could literally remove him from command, so getting on her bad side day one could end… poorly for the Marine.
“I can totally understand, Commander.” Harris smiled. “To be honest, when I ended up with Dresden initially… it was at the hands of none other than Q himself. Dropped me and my CIO on the Dres and after fixing that mess, Command gave me the chance to keep her. That’s been two years and I’ve never been more happy with a Command.” There was a bright, honest smile coming from the Commanding Officer. Wasn’t what I was expecting the I got here but its sure turned into something special.”
Taking a sip from what smelled like coffee from a beat up old Fighter Command mug, Harris looked to Katie with sparkling blue eyes. “Tell me… what is your idea of the role of the CNS in the modern Fleet?”
