(snip)Finding the indicated med kit, she knelt back down next to Bailey and gave her a comforting smile, although her blue eyes were clearly full of stress. “You’re going to have to help me out here a little, Ensign,” she said, using Bailey’s rank in attempt to shake her back into reality a little. “I’m not a medical doctor,” she added, knowing that might not have been immediately obvious unless Bailey had reviewed her record during her physical.

Charlie fumbled to open the med kit and started looking through the vials. She weakly pulled a pink vial out and handed it to the counselor, muttering the word, “…hypo…” as she reached for the tricorder and flipped it open, wincing as her bruised knuckles brushed against the side of the case. She handed it to Nunn as she murmured “…need to scan…head injury…” she said as her eyes fluttered, trying to stay conscious. She could feel that something wasn’t right but she wasn’t used to being on this side and deep down she was terrified. She instinctively reached for Katie’s hand, hoping it would keep her awake.

Thankfully, the ability to stay calm in a crisis was a common thread between medical doctors and psychologists - she just tended to work a little better in the confines of mental health crises versus physical health ones. She adeptly finagled the hypospray together and then pressed it to the ensign’s neck gingerly, trying to avoid adding any more pain to the already battered woman. She flipped open the medical tricorder and held it it in one hand, concentrating her scans on the ensign’s head and hands, checking for any head injuries or permanent damage to her hands. She felt Bailey’s hand reach for hers and she held it gently and firmly as she completed the scan.
Charlie breathed a sigh of relief as she felt the drug make it’s way round her system, easing the pain and dissipating the nausea. She gripped on to the counselor’s hand which kept her in the room as Nunn performed the scans.
“It’ll be all right, Ensign,” she murmured, soothingly. “We’ll get you the help you need.” Of course, she didn’t precisely mention what kind of help that was going to be, but one step at a time: physical first, then mental.

The scans showed that Charlie had a nasty concussion but thankfully there was no damage to her brain although she was going to have a whopping headache for a few days. She had broken a couple of fingers and fractured her knuckle where she had punched the mirror but nothing that couldn’t be easily repaired. As Charlie felt her body relax with the medication she remembered what had happened and began to weep. “I’m sorry to cause you all this trouble…” she sniffed as tears rolled down her cheeks. Her head was still throbbing but in a strange way Charlie welcomed it because it was keeping her mind from dwelling on other thoughts.

Katie studied the information on the readout carefully and then glanced at Charlie again.
“I think we’re going to have to get you to Sickbay, Ensign,” she commented. “Unless you can fix these busted fingers yourself, it’s time to call in some reinforcements. I’ll stay with you the whole time, I promise.” The last part was said firmly and with a great deal of confidence, as she didn’t want Bailey to be concerned with someone putting the incident in her record. “This is what I’m here for,” she added in response to the tearful apology. She gently hugged Bailey to her, muffling a wince as she did so.

Charlie shook her head in a panic and immediately regretted it as pain shot through her head. She held her hand to her head as she pleaded. “Please don’t make me go…” she whimpered, tears streaming down her face. She was terrified of her colleagues finding out what had happened, she had tried so hard to keep this part of her life separate and secret. “They don’t know…about this…about the dreams…” she whispered as she frantically grabbed Katie’s hand, letting out a stifled yelp of pain.
