Having regurgitated her dinner, Charlie sat in silence on the bathroom floor for a moment, waiting for the feeling to pass. She slowly got up and splashed some cold water on her face, allowing it to soothe her flushed cheeks. As she brought her head up and looked in the mirror, her mother’s charred face stared back at her. Charlie screamed and instinctively punched the mirror, falling backwards into the wall with a mighty clunk as her head hit the bulkhead.

Katie heard the water in the sink and moved to enter the bathroom, planning to offer the ensign a cup of tea to try to settle her stomach. Her eyes widened in horror as she watched the ensign punch at the mirror in front of the sink and then the sickening crack as her head hit the bulkhead. Cursing lightly under her breath, she sank to her knees next to the young woman. A brief thought that she should have gone into psychiatry and not psychology crossed through her mind as she checked to make sure that she was breathing and had a pulse.

Charlie groggily came round and groaned as she tried to work out what happened. “…where am I…?” she murmured with a bit of a slur to her speech. Her head felt really fuzzy and she was having trouble focusing in front of her. She instinctively reached up and touched her head where it had hit the bulkhead and gasped as she felt pain radiating out from the wound. She could feel a warm trickle of blood slowly work it’s way down the back of her neck and let out a bit of a pathetic whimper as she saw the blood on her hand. All she wanted to do was sleep but she knew that was dangerous with a head injury. As she felt another wave of nausea building up again, she turned to the counselor and murmured, “…med kit…”

The feeling of relief when Bailey regained consciousness was immense and Katie rocked back on her heels slightly, keeping a firm hand on the middle of Bailey’s chest to prevent her from getting up. The pathetic whimper tore at her heart as she processed the murmured suggestion and nodded her agreement. “Where?” she queried, getting to her feet with a grimace. “Stay there, stay awake, and don’t move,” she ordered, her voice extremely firm in her fear for the condition of the young woman. Part of her nagged that she should call to Sickbay and get a trained doctor, but her instinct was that Bailey wouldn’t want this recorded in her record. Plus, she needed to figure out what had happened first before she could even report to a medical professional the exact situation.
Finding the indicated med kit, she knelt back down next to Bailey and gave her a comforting smile, although her blue eyes were clearly full of stress. “You’re going to have to help me out here a little, Ensign,” she said, using Bailey’s rank in attempt to shake her back into reality a little. “I’m not a medical doctor,” she added, knowing that might not have been immediately obvious unless Bailey had reviewed her record during her physical.
