He wondered if the usual questions would be asked or if this would be a different kind of boarding interview. : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : LtC. How can I help you Ensign?” She asked as Orin walked into her office. : : : : : : : : : : : : : : CNS : : : : : : : : : : : : Orin looked behind him for an Ensign. Seeing no-one behind him he turned back to the Counselor. : : : : : : : : : : : : “Were you expecting someone else? I can come back later.” : : : : : : : : : : : : LtC Orin, Engineering : : : : : : : : : : Brooke looked down “I apologize Lt. Commander. I had my mind elsewhere. How can I assist you today?” She said “Please come in and have a seat.” : : : : : : : : : : CNS : : : : : : Orin smiled warm and friendly, his large eyes shined like metal. He was wearing the gold of operations but was bare footed. : : : : : : “That’s quite alright. I’m new on board and am making the customary stop with the counselor, well, you. What’s your procedure for clearing a new crewman for duty?” : : : : : : LtC Orin, Engineering : : : : “Welcome aboard.” Brooke said “Have a seat and we’ll chat for a few minutes about your past, your expections and your worries.” She said “where were you stationed before coming aboard the Dresden?” Brooke asked as she took a seat. : : : : CNS : : Orin smiled and took the offered seat. : : “I was at Station 459 prior to this assignment. Straight out of the academy I was assigned to small leisure station. It was visited by many pleasure seekers. I was there for seven years, and made the rank of Lieutenant by my third year, when they told me my talents were being wasted on a little backwater station and that I should be on a ship. So the station Commander requested I be transferred and a week later I arrived here, a mere engineer, with a promotion to the rank of Lieutenant Commander.” : : LtC Orin Losc, Engineering Brooke nodded “Where did you grow up?” She asked “Do you have any family still at home and how do they feel about you being on a deep space mission now rather than on a station?” CNS

“I grew up in the Zafra Province on Betazed. I have a mother and two sisters at home. They’re proud of me for making engineer in Star Fleet but they hold out some misbegotten hope that my empathic abilities will kick in soon. They still refuse to believe I can feel the state of machines as if they had emotions like living things.” Orin said.

Brooke nodded “Have you had any inclination of your empathic abilities?” She asked “Perhaps you have a better relationship with the machines.”

Orin laughed.

“I wouldn’t really call it a relationship with machines. That would take a very advanced AI or a most expertly programmed bot.” Orin said, “But what do you mean by inclination of my empathic abilities?”
