So, I was just wondering a few things…

Welcome!

First, does anyone know how I can attach an image in my character profile?

Upload it to an image site like Imagur and then put the link the profile.

Second, what is the protocol for conversations. I don’t want to presume what another character will say, but I also don’t want my posts to become micro-posts that have no depth. How challenging is it to construct a conversation in this format? Suggestions? (In case you didn’t guess by now, I’m a newbie! Not to RP, but definitely to this! LOL)

Usually just make a new paragraph so the person has room to respond. You can also add something like “OOC: leaving space for responses”

And third, I’ve been trying to avoid personal interactions or detailed files about anyone because I don’t want to ‘meta-game’. I don’t want to know things about you my character doesn’t know yet - is that a mistake? Or do you think I’m doing the right thing? Just looking for feedback. Thanks.

I don’t know about others, but my characters’ bios are what would be found in their personnel files and available to know. The only exception to this (for me) is if I say in the bio it’s not known or any attached posts that I want to share but are probably personal in nature so Star Fleet wouldn’t put it in the file.

1.) Unfortunately, the site does not currently allow us to post pictures, either in character bios or threads. This is mostly done for security reasons, I believe… STF doesn’t want just anyone uploading any picture they’d like. It would be difficult for our tech team to monitor those pictures. I’ve heard that a change to this might be in the works… but until then, the best idea is to post a link in your character bio to the image. You can hyperlink it so it’s not just an ugly URL. 2.) Conversations in STF are something you just kinda have to feel out over time. Don’t worry about making mistakes! You’ll go over a lot of the basics of posting in your intro thread with your DH, which I see you’ve started! That’s great. But in general, conversations are a little tricky in this format, it’s true. Usually, characters say more than just one sentence per post. Although you’re right that you don’t want to assume what another character will say, you can occasionally assume what their general reaction will be. Like if your character says hello, you can reasonably assume that the other character isn’t going to start cussing you out. So your character could say “hello, my name is ____” and then also introduce another topic of conversation (such as, “nice weather we’re having, huh?”) under the impression that the other character will introduce themselves in the next post and continue that topic of conversation (and likely bring up others). The best way to see what I mean is to read other posts here on the Dresden! That will give you a good idea on how it all works. But don’t worry, you’ll catch on quick I’m sure!

3.) This is a personal choice for you to make. BUT I will say that reading other posts is usually essential for a new writer to get acquainted with the style of the club. If you really don’t want to know anything OOC that your character doesn’t, at least read the threads with “Main Sim” in the title to get an idea of how we do things. For me, I see STF as basically a written Star Trek show. We (the writers) are directors, producers, and watchers of that show. Limiting yourself to only your character’s storylines will cause you to miss out on some awesome storytelling happening in all sorts of places. Additionally, a little bit of light meta-gaming is fine, in that if you read another character’s bio and see that they like… surfing, for example. If your character also likes surfing, you could make a side-sim thread of your character teaching surfing lessons in the holodeck, which would be a thread that the other character would probably like to get in on! It’s okay for us as writers to set the stage a bit for in-character interactions as long as its done with good intentions to further the stories of characters involved. That being said, the best way to invite someone in specific to join a thread would be to message them through the email system on the site, or Discord. In summary, I recommend reading about the other characters on the ship, as it will improve your experience as a watcher of the Dresden TV show (if that makes sense).
