Max walked to the CNS Office and tapped the chime.

He straighten his uniform took a deep breath as he waited for a response. As he waited he picked at his sleeveless. He had no idea what to expect so he was a little nervous. He just finished his boarding physical and now he just needs to get an evaluation done then he can report for duty.

Max had entered the office and scanned the for the counselor. The doors hissed shut behind him. Once he spotted him he walked over and stood at attention.

“Ensign Max Hunter. I am here for my evaluation, sir.”

He fidgeted a bit unsure of what to do so he shifted his weight nervously

He hadn’t done one of these since the Academy. Back then they were just getting him ready. This was different. This was real. He was on an actual starship now and people were actually counting on him.

Max looked up. “Yes, sir, it is,” he said. “I just graduated from the Academy not too long ago. This will be my first mission,” he added with a little pride. It had only been a month since he graduated. He still couldn’t believe he was here. He’d worked so hard to get to this point, and he didn’t want to mess it up.

Lt. J.G. Samuel A. McIntyre studied the young ensign for a moment, noting the nervous shifting and the pride that had crept into his voice when he mentioned graduating from the Academy. He leaned back slightly in his chair, keeping his tone calm and conversational rather than making the encounter feel like an interrogation. “A month out of the Academy and already aboard a starship. That is quite a transition, Ensign. The Academy prepares you for a great deal, but there is a difference between training for the Fleet and actually standing a watch when people are depending on you. Being nervous about that does not concern me. In fact, I would be more concerned if you weren’t taking the responsibility seriously.”

He folded his hands on the desk. “So let’s start with the basics. Tell me about yourself outside of the uniform. What brought you into Security? Was this something you always wanted to do, or did you discover it during your Academy training? And more importantly, what do you think your greatest strength is as a security officer?” Sam paused, giving Max time to answer rather than filling the silence himself. “There isn’t a right answer here, Ensign. I am trying to understand the person I may be dealing with when the situation stops being routine.”

His expression remained attentive and professional. “And we’ll talk about the other side of that as well. What do you think you need to improve? Every officer has something. I don’t expect a newly commissioned ensign to have everything figured out, and I certainly don’t expect you to pretend that you do. What matters is whether you’re capable of recognizing your weaknesses and working on them. This evaluation isn’t about finding reasons to keep you off duty. It’s about making sure you’re prepared to perform that duty safely, effectively, and with a clear head.”
