Sapeth led the way for two of his engineering teams onto the flight crews Mechanical Deck. The task on the surface was simple, prepare a runabout to appear like a small commercial freighter, so that a landing party could slip down to the surface. But from experience, any task that sounded simple was going to end up taking significantly longer then would have been planned for.

The maintenance crew had already dragged a runabout out for them, conveniently. Walking up to it, Sapeth keyed open the hatch and motioned the teams in.

“Alpha team, work on the transponder. Gamma team, proceed with modifying the warp signature. Delta team, I’ll be joining you to work on installation of holographic projections to change the visual appearance of the runabout. Please proceed with your assignments.”

As Alpha and Gamma teams entered the runabout, Sapeth stepped to the side as several dollies were pushed in by a few additional crewmen, carrying holoprojectors.

“We are arranging them in overlapping fields of coverage, for redundancy. Three evenly spaced radially 1 meter from the bow of the runabout. 3 rotated 60 degrees from the forward projectors 3 meters from the after of the runabout. Understood?”

“Yes chief.”

Sapeth just nodded as they started moving to mount he projectors. He climbed up on top of the runabout and started removing panels so they could access the necessary internal systems.

As the teams worked, Sapeth’s comm badge chirped.

=^=Lt. Sapeth, this is Lt. Reid. How are those modifications to the runabout coming along? I’ll be needing it soon.=^=

Sapeth didn’t sigh, but if he had been human he would have. Standing up right he looked over at one of his team members as he rolled his eyes.

=^=The process would be going faster without interruptions.=^= He paused for a moment. =^=Could you define what you mean by “soon”?=^=

=^=Is that sarcasm I sense? How unbecoming from a Vulcan. It would be real nice if it could be ready by the time we get into the system,=^= Reid replied.

=^=That’s what I was hoping to hear, Lt. I’ll be down there in a bit so you can show me all the new gadgets and gizmos. Reid out.=^=

Sapeth didn’t reply as he bent back down to work on the holoprojectors they were installing. “Where are we with the warp signature?” he asked raising his voice slightly to be heard inside of the runabout.

“Almost there Lieutenant. Should only be 5 more minutes.”

With a final turn of a spanner, Sapeth stood up from the holoemitter he had finally finished installing.

“That’s the last one Lieutenant.”

He just nodded as he climbed down from the top of the runabout, and entered the main cabin, where the team was snapping the panels back in place over the warp core.

“Status report,” he said calmly.

“Warp field is adjusted Lieutenant, she’ll look like a freighter to anyone looking at scanners.”

“And we’ve got the transponder updated. Now transmitting as the SS Meridian, Registry FR-8817.”

Sapeth nodded. “Confirm the runabout is otherwise ready for the away team when they arrive.” With a quick aye, the teams went to checking over the runabout.
