USS Chimera
Breakfast mess
Personal Log – Lieutenant (jg) Samuel McIntyre
Chief Counselor – USS Chimera
Stardate 79868.1
The mess hall was unusually quiet for the beginning of Alpha Shift. Most of the crew had already grabbed breakfast before reporting to their duty stations, leaving only a handful of officers scattered throughout the room.
Samuel McIntyre sat alone near one of the large viewports, a steaming mug of black coffee beside a hearty breakfast of medium-rare steak, fried potatoes, and fresh fruit on the side. Resting against the coffee mug was a data PADD containing the day’s counseling schedule and overnight departmental reports.
He cut into his steak with practiced precision, taking a sip of coffee before turning another page on the PADD.
The reports were encouraging. Morale throughout the crew remained high following the successful completion of the Chimera’s latest assignment. A few junior officers had requested routine counseling appointments to discuss career progression. At the same time, one engineering team had been referred after spending nearly thirty-six consecutive hours repairing a damaged plasma relay during the previous mission.
Samuel made a few notes.
Recommend a mandatory rest period for Engineering Team Three.
Follow up with Ensign T’Lar regarding adaptation to mixed-species duty section.
Schedule a leadership session with Lieutenant Kross concerning junior officer mentorship.
He leaned back in his chair, taking another slow sip of coffee as stars drifted silently past the viewport.
Being Chief Counselor was about far more than listening to problems. It was understanding the heartbeat of the ship—recognizing fatigue before it became burnout, conflict before it became resentment, and fear before it became hesitation in the line of duty.
He closed the PADD for a moment and simply watched the stars.
Every person aboard the USS Chimera had left someone behind to wear the uniform. His responsibility was to make sure they remained mentally and emotionally ready to face whatever waited beyond the next star.
Finishing the last of his breakfast, Samuel stood, tucked the PADD beneath his arm, picked up his coffee, and made his way toward Counseling, ready to begin another day of helping the crew carry burdens that rarely appeared in official mission reports.
