Ensign Shau was putting the final touches on the holoprogram. Or, more acurately… putting an extra layer of glue on and hoping it held together.

He knew it wasn’t perfect… he combined elements of simulations for refugee management, security checkpoint procedures, and identification of covert threats… and then added Chimera’s Deck 11 as the location.

MJ hoped would be enough to get them started, but he also shot a message to Ensign Everett Shaw to see if the Engineer had any experience programing holosuite scenarios, or editing them on the fly.

He looked over at the various Crewman and Security Officers that had come down to the Security Department’s holo suites to participate in the scenario. “Alright team… I think we have something good enough to work with for now. Lets try and focus on what we can get out of the scenario to improve the draft plans we’ve set up. The simulated refugees you’ll encounter will range from scared and wounded to impatient and hostile… we’ll need to learn how to deal with all of them. If I got it set up right… there will also be hostile actors trying to get past the checkpoints, so stay alert “

MJ smiled faintly. “When you see any glitches in the program… and I’m sure you’ll see them… try to ignore them unless they break the scenario. But please report them afterward so we can make the training better for the next teams. Any questions?”

OOC: Open for any Security types that want to stay busy. I added Everett as well in case he wanted to come down and lend his programming expertise. (If he has any)

The team either had a chance to review the plan or was involved in drsfting it. Nobody had any questions.

A few minutes later the they were in the holosuite in an exact replica of Deck 11. They were currently in the starboard cargo bay, and the security Crewman took their preassigned positions.

Seeing that everybody was ready, he started the next phase of the program and the first batch of refugees beamed onto the cargo transporter’s platform.

MJ, a couple other Ensigns, and a Senior Chief watched as the process started. The intake of the first few people appeared smooth, so over the next half hour Ensign Shau increased the frequency of the transporter and the number of people beamed in at a time to their maximum capacity.

Things started breaking down of course… but that was the point of the simulation. The intake stations could not keep up with the volume and the lines started to back up. Once the cargo bay was completely full, MJ reset the simulation and they were in an empty cargo bay again.

“Alright team… we had some issues there, and I didn’t even add any disgruntled refugees or people trying to infiltrate security.” Ensign Shau glanced around the assembled security teams. “What do we need to do better? What were our problem areas?”

Ensign MJ Shau - Security Officer - USS Chimera

The security chief stood off to one side and watched the program, making mental notes. He was pleased with the plan his junior officers had come up with for accommodating the refugees

He stepped forward and halted the sim. “Gentlemen, i see one problem here. We don’t yet know how many people we’ll be taking aboard OR how long this operation may last. You may have to limit the number of personnel at each point, needing to work in shifts, add to that extra security at critical areas of the ship: CIC, engineering, computer core, etc. . .I’m reluctant to do this, because I want everyone at their sharperst, but we may need volunteers to pull double shifts.”

Lt. Conner Reid
Chief of Security-USS Chimera

Ensign Shau nodded at the comment, but he was a little surprised that the Chief of Security had been observing their training scenario. “Great point, Sir… we’ll need to have to have a contingency plan for extended and continuous operations.” MJ typed a few things into his pad. “I’ll work with Ensign Snowden and we’ll collect a list of volunteers and have it forwarded to you for review.”

Ensign Shau turned to the team. “One of the key things I noted was the need for increased throughput at intake since that was our primary bottle neck. We need to do that without sacrificing our security standards or… as the COS pointed out, using too much manpower. It we have physical barriers created, we should be able to operate 3 stations with the same amount of people he had running 1. NC Rudan, I’d like you to come up with a few layout options to test.”

“For the rest of us, unless there are any questions, we’re going to run it again. I’ll throttle the number of refugees down for the moment, but we’ll start including some problem personel to exercise Ensign Snowden’s response plans…”

Ensign MJ Shau - Security Officer - USS Chimera

Ensign Snowden gave a small nod toward Shau.
“Sounds good.”
He looked around at the assembled team.
“If we’re adding problem personnel this time, let’s treat it like the real thing.”
He stepped toward the intake area display.
“Don’t lock onto the first thing that looks suspicious and miss everything else around it. People under stress will act differently… fear, anger, confusion… that doesn’t automatically make them a threat.”
A brief pause.
“But if behavior breaks pattern, flag it and communicate it.”
He glanced toward the secondary screening markers.
“Keep the main line moving, redirect quietly, and don’t let one problem become ten.”
A small grin tugged at the corner of his mouth as he looked toward Shau.
“Let’s see if our plan survives first contact.”
Then Snowden moved toward his assigned position, ready for round two.

MJ nodded when Derek gave the go ahead, and punched in a few commands into his PADD.

Simulated refugees stared beaming in immediately. The first iteration of the sim had them all the refugees in a sort of stunned compliance, but this version had more emotional range. Two of the first group of refugees were kids who were apparently separated from their parents or guardians. They started crying immediately, which caused a minor slowdown that continued even as the next batch of refugees were beamed in.

Many refugees started asking the Security Crewman questions… many of which they had no way to answer.

“Where’s my brother?”

“Where are we going?”

“Why is this happening?”

Most were still in a state of shock though, and moved through the intake process as if on autopilot. They were either relieved to be safe, or still processing everything that happened.

About midway through the line there was a handful of refugees looking around nervously… while a large and beefy Andorian started shouting angrily. He had just beamed in and was already causing a disturbance.

OOC: Setting the scene for Derek… please have fun as we stress test the procedures for (potential) troublemakers!

Ensign MJ Shau - Security Officer - USS Chimera

OOC: Bump for Derek… or hit me up via DM or Discord if you want to talk offline.

Ensign Snowden’s eyes moved across the cargo bay, not locking onto the loudest problem immediately.
Crying children. Confused civilians. Questions from every direction.
Normal.
The Andorian?
Maybe normal. Maybe not.
He tapped his combadge and kept his voice level.
“Crewman, get those children over to the side and see if we can identify guardians in the intake logs. Pair one officer with them and keep them visible.”
He pointed toward another nearby Security crewman.
“You answer what you can and keep the line moving. If you don’t know an answer, don’t guess. Direct them forward.”
His attention shifted toward the Andorian now.
“Shau, I’ve got the noise.”

The Crewman quickly moved to handle some of the issues Derek determined to be minor while the Ensign went directly toward the Andorian.

The man was heavily built and around two meters in height. From the coveralls and callused hands, he seemed to be a blue collar type. He continued to shout as Ensign Snowden made his approach.

“What right do you Terran scum have to rip us from our homes? Our families? Who gave you the right to play gods? We’re the Sovereign Citizens of Sol VII!” The names were likely one of the glitches MJ mentioned, due to the cobbled together nature of the program.

Snowden approached without rushing, stopping a few feet away instead of stepping into the man’s space.
“Sir.”
Not loud. Not challenging.
Just enough to cut through the situation.
“My name’s Ensign Snowden, Security.”
Hands visible, posture relaxed.
“I need your attention for a second.”
A quick glance around the line.
“You’re not in trouble, and I’m not here to make things worse.”
A beat.
“But right now I need you to help me keep everyone moving.”
Snowden watched the Andorian’s eyes and body language more than his words.
Angry people yelled.
People about to act moved.
Behind him he spoke calmly into his combadge without breaking eye contact:
“Secondary team, stand by.”

Ensign Snowden, Derek
Security Officer USS Chimera

“Why? Why should we do what you say, you Imperial pig? Sol VII bows to no one!” The Andorian continued to shout, but didn’t make any aggressive movements. The only thing that caught Derek’s attention was when the large man’s gaze flicked past him for a split second, looking at something, or someone, further up the line.

“Im Hodjen Proll!” The Andorian cintinued, a bit of spittle flying from his mouth as he shouted even louder. Derek could see many of the refugees stopping and staring at the spectacle. He could even sense the secondary team moving up behind him, their attention also on Hodjen.

“I’m the leader of the Allied Unions, and I demand to speak to your leader, little man!”

OOC: I’m happy to go back and forth with you, but you can also just write the whole scene if you prefer. MJ is really just managing the holo-sim… you’re running the security detail.

Ensign MJ Shau - Security Officer - USS Chimera

Ensign Snowden didn’t turn to look at the approaching secondary team.
That would’ve told Hodjen exactly where Security was moving.
Instead his eyes tracked the Andorian’s face and more importantly, that brief glance past him.
Not at the Ensign.
Someone else.
Or a signal.
Snowden shifted just enough to subtly block the Andorian’s line further up the intake lane.
“Hodjen Proll,” he said evenly, finally using the man’s name.
“No one’s forcing you to bow to anyone.”
He kept his hands visible and posture relaxed.
“And right now? I’m not hearing a man trying to start a fight.”
A brief glance around at the refugees who had stopped moving.
“I’m hearing someone who’s angry and wants answers.”
A beat.
“And honestly? I’d probably be angry too.”
The volume around them dipped just slightly.
People listened when shouting stopped.
Snowden lowered his voice rather than raising it.
“But right now you’ve got a lot of people behind you looking at you.”
His eyes held on Hodjen.
“Kids. Families. People who are scared.”
Another small pause.
“You say you’re a leader.”
His head tilted slightly.
“Leaders set the tone.”
Snowden let that sit for a second before speaking into his combadge, still never breaking eye contact.
“Secondary team, hold position.”
Not advance.
Hold.
Then back to Hodjen:
“So here’s what I’m offering.”
A slight gesture toward the side corridor.
“You come with me, tell me what happened, tell me why you’re angry, and we’ll talk.”
His expression stayed calm.
“Or we keep doing this here… and every person behind you stays stuck waiting.”
A faint half-smile.
“Your call, Mr. Proll.”

Ensign Snowden, Derek
Security Officer USS Chimera

The burly Andorian glanced from Derek to the Secondary Team and then to the refugees that were still watching.

Oddly enough, what he saw seemed to relax him. It almost seemed like this is exactly what Hodjen wanted. To have everyone focused on him.

“Oh, you’d like that, wouldn’t you? Tuck me away in some secret black site never to be seen again? I don’t think so, Starfleet Dog!” He started raising his voice again, louder than before. “I want you to beam me and my people back to the surface! That’s what I want!”
