“Well, at least we know what happened to Voss off of the Cinzano,” Freja murmured to herself, “Computer, is there any information on the research being conducted at the Scallax research outpost?” She asked. Not that she could tell the rebels even if she was able to ascertain, but more so from her own perspective of she disliked going into situations like these without knowing.

Accessing

Scall Prime, planetary designation “Scallax”. Federation Research station “Hojimbo”. Projects include longitudinal studies into the medicinal properties of Bofinius Hydrosaline. Bofinius Hydrosaline has been proposed as a replacement to cortisone.”

There were several other minor projects that were in the final stages of completion or had recently been shut down. However the hydrosaline project was not particularly thrilling as far as medical research was concerned. The compound promised a mere 15% gain in rejuvinative properties with a 5% decreased risk in side effects or other complications from the initial research. Hojimbo was merely replicating existing research and doing testing on a longer timescale. None of the participants had suffered novel or life threatening side effects. It was all very benign.

There had to be more, Freja knew as much, but it didn’t necessarily point to ‘unauthorized’ experiments on the Scallax populace. It was more likely it was placed in Scallax at the time because they were close to the Orion sector, and a Federation world member, if indeed anything classified was being conducted. She wasn’t super in the loop in clandestine maneuvers, but one didn’t reach her rank without learning a few basics.

“Computer do we have any record of the number of citizens of Scallax who disappeared in proximity to research station Hojimbo?” She was focusing primarily on the reserach station as instructed from Admiral Blackwood. Perhaps if she could offer insight into the disappearances, it might gain her some ground with the rebels.

There are no reports on file of any missing persons in proximity to Station Hojimbo

Which…didn’t sit right with Freja. There would always be the occasional one or two people who go missing in any area where people frequented.

“Why do I get the feeling we’re maybe encountering some black ops stuff?” Freja murmured to herself in the quiet of her ready room. She mentally filed that away for later, right now there wasn’t any point trying to bash her head into the wall trying to find details that were probably classified and above her clearance.

She never quite understood why people got so bent out of shape when encountering these things. She was a realist down to her very core and she held no misconceptions that while the Federation did predominately stick to the classic ‘seek out new life and new civilizations’ aspect of the mission, sometimes that mission didn’t go to plan and you needed to use some espionage to keep your citizens safe.

Shaking her head, she returned to her notes she made from the broadcasts. She couldn’t help but think something more was going on. “Computer, what reports exist in the database regarding Orion incursions into Scallax settlements?” Eleven days did seem like an awfully long time to respond to an attack, but if Starfleet wasn’t expecting it, that could explain it, resources were typically allocated to where intelligence indicated they would be needed.

There have been 15 reported incidents suspected to have been caused by Orion Syndicate raiders in the Orion sector in the last 18 months. Patrols have tracked the Orions each time to neutral space surrounding K’ei Enol and Veridan along the border of the Romulan Neutral Zone.
