Ensign Snowden paused just outside the security office, taking a steady breath, calming his nerves before stepping inside.
woosh
“Ensign Snowden, reporting for duty, sir.”

OOC: Make sure you tag the person you are waiting to get a reply from. I didn’t see this post until just recently. ; )

IC: Reid didn’t look up right away when the doors parted. He finished the line he’d been reading on the PADD, letting it go dark before setting it aside with deliberate care. Only then did he lift his eyes.

“Ensign Snowden.”

His voice was even, measured, precise. Reid stood from behind his desk, squaring his shoulders as he took in the younger officer. Not just the uniform—anyone could wear a uniform—but posture, eye movement, how he carried the silence in the room. Those things mattered more.

“Chief of Security Conner Reid,” he said, stepping around the desk and offering a firm handshake. “Welcome aboard.”

A brief pause followed. Reid let it sit just long enough to see how Snowden handled it.

“I’ve read your file,” he continued. “Solid marks. Good instincts under pressure.” One brow lifted slightly. “That can be an asset—if you know when to rein it in.”

He began a slow, casual circle around the new recruit. Like a man used to reading situations from every angle.

“Security aboard a starship isn’t about looking tough or reacting fast. It’s about judgment. You’ll be trusted with people’s lives—crew, civilians, sometimes entire worlds depending on the day we’re having.” A faint smirk ghosted across his face. “So no pressure.”

Reid stopped in front of him again, hands clasped behind his back.

“You follow orders when they make sense. You question them when they don’t—but you’d better be right when you do.” His tone sharpened just a fraction. “And you never, ever let your ego make the call for you.”

“That said… I don’t expect perfection. I expect awareness. Learn your team. Learn this ship. And if you screw up—and you will at some point—you bring it to me before I have to come looking.”

He nodded once, decisive.

“Any questions, Ensign?”

Ensogn Snowden met the handshake firmly, steady without trying to overmatch it.
“Understood, sir.”
He held Reid’s gaze for a moment calm, attentive then gave a small nod.
“I’ll keep my judgment ahead of my instincts and my ego out of both.”
A slight shift of weight, relaxed but focused.
“I’ll get familiar with my assigned sections and the team right away.”
A brief pause.
“One question, sir.”
“When something doesn’t line up but isn’t a confirmed threat yet do you prefer we flag and monitor… or act early and risk escalation?”

Conner grinned. This was going to give him a glimpse into the mindset of his new scurity member.

“That’s a good question, ensign. Tell me, without knowing my preferences, how would YOU handle that situation? Show me how you think.”

Chief of Security-USS Chimera

Ensign Snowden didn’t answer immediately.
Not hesitation but consideration.
“I’d start with observation, sir.”
His tone stayed even, grounded.
“Flag the behavior or anomaly and verify it against available data movement patterns, scans, anything that helps narrow uncertainty.”
A slight shift of weight.
“If it stays inconsistent, I’d tighten control around it without drawing attention. Limit movement, adjust positioning, make sure it doesn’t have room to become a problem.”
A brief pause.
“Then act if it crosses the line.”
He met Reid’s gaze again.
“Early action without confirmation risks escalation. Waiting too long risks losing control.”
Another beat.
“I’d manage the space in between.”
“At least that’s what I was taught by my parents”

Reid nodded slowly, appreciating the ensign’s well thought out response.

“Your parents taught you that? And does that contradict or conform with what you learned at the Academy?”

The security chief leaned forward, elbows resting on his desk. “Be aware, there’s a pretty good of situations like that taking place during this upcoming mission.”
