Footsteps were steady - a melody all their own - as following departure from the command ready room and the checkin and interview process with them Aurelian Vale had made his way through the ship for his check-in and interview by Medical (Deck 3) and Councelling (Deck 33) to be sure the proverbial ducks are in a row while the passive measure of his being drew him through on a path towards the rear of the ship and Deck 18 heading for Engineering Head’s Office. Thoughts of unpacking and settling in being the last thing in his mind long after a desire to be of value and bear purpose to the Chimera. Coming to the office he would pause outside the door signalling his arrival as he waited to be sure it was an appropriate time and indication was given for his entry before he would make way into the office and pause standing at attention so that he wasnt interrupting more important tasks before he would identify himself.

“Sir, Ensign Aurelian Vale reporting for duty as a transfer from Starfleet Academy to join the ranks of the USS Chimera engineering department…” Aurelian spoke calmly and clearly as he looked towards the department head with one amber-gold eye and one blue eyeport which looked towards Sapeth in a passive manner of merely existing as there was presently nothing needing scanned on an audio, visual, transmission or scan based measure.

Sapeth’s office was bare. There were a few PADD’s neatly stacked on the desk, and a small toolbox which was closed on the work bench along the other wall. Everything was neat and put away. He had no need for further decorations, it was a working space. And a neat and organized space allowed for efficient work.

Finishing the report he was working on before turning off his terminal and turning in his seat towards Vale. “Orders?”

Aurelian Vale was ready - efficient - and calm as proper presentation was made to provide forward his orders to Lt Sapeth even as Aurelian took note of the cleanliness and preparation of the Chief Engineer’s workspace. He anticipated the orders would be requested so they were presented in kind.

True enough - following an exceptional passage of his time in Starfleet Academy and exiting with a high grade level in his course studies where he was lauded for doing something he seemed like he loved - he was put forward for assignment to the Chimera where upon arrival had gone for checkin with Chimera Command, Chimera Medical, and Chimera Councelling.

Sapeth set aside the PADD without looking at it. “I trust your transfer to the Chimera was acceptable. What are your qualifications Ensign?”

Lt Sapeth - Chief Engineer

“Growing up I had an affinity and love of power grids and orbital paths…i often fondly found myself disassembling things to learn how they worked and reassembling them from their core levels…I am trill…and one of the experienced paths of my symbiont contained astrophysicist and starship propulsion theorist and contractor…as I was coming of age I went into an engineering apprenticeship on a survey vessel to map distortions…after which I had since been…” Aurelian pauses, “…assimilated…constituted as an engineering member…and reclaimed…following reclaimation by Starfleet I had entered into Starfleet Academy…finding myself embracing my capabilities…loves…fondness…and capabilities…for advanced engineering coursework specializing in propulsion, warp systems and harmonics, power systems and grid controls, sensor augmentation and shield amplification and modulation. Primary discipline being Engineering with a secondary focus in cybernetic ethics and propulsion system design. I had since graduated with honors in Engineering Systems Integration as well as Propulsion and Power Systems. Functionally improved due to the fact that…in essence…I am capable of processing from three levels or paths…my own mind, the symbiont, and the remaining adaptations…”

Ensign Aurelian Vale (Engineering)

“Very good. I have you assigned to Alpha shift, working with the warp propulsion team, led by Lieutenant Junior Grade Smith. Please be aware that you will be rotated through various teams while aboard the Chimera. First, it promotes cross training among the different disciplines. Second, it helps in each member of this department maintaining their qualifications.

“Are you familiar with the Mjolnir Class ship specifications?”

Lt Sapeth - Chief Engineer

“Understood, Sir…it is most certainly logical to be able to do rotations through teams beyond primary focus point on a particular shift…maintaining the edge while also performing the tasks that utilize strengths…engineers dont use a singular tool after all…a hammer not being suitably efficient for every task…” Aurelian answers calmly with consideration of the question asked and the information garnered.

“I am, Sir. I spent ample time during the flight to the Chimera going over the specifications and mentally mapping out the passages, access points, grids…like a doctor studying a body…the skeleton that is the frame, the veins and heart with comes from the core and grid, brain for the computer, sensors being nerves in addition to the senses weaponry and shielding…Mjolnir class is most certainly an impressive vessel…a vessel that is at the ready for conflict…and that can lead a continuance of tension…” Aurelian answers honestly, “Like the Chimera were a living being…I wanted to know all that I could before I came to step foot within to see how I could best serve.”

“Ensign, the Chimera is no more living then I am a machine,” Sapteh replied flatly. Sapeth had great respect for poets, there was artistry to the flow of the words. But there was a time and a place to make analogies, and this was not the time.

Lt Sapeth - Chief Engineer

“Understood sir, I will make a point to keep that in mind in the future.” Aurelian speaks calmly looking to Sapeth with a slight nod of understanding and respect.

Sapeth blinked twice as he looked at Vale. “Do you have any questions for me Ensign?”

Lt Sapeth - Chief Engineer

“Are there any limitations to the measure of interractions you would prefer? Most reports would go to my direct line supervisor certainly - if a task improvement idea comes forward would you prefer it similarly go through them or go to you?” Aurelian inquires calmly truly wanting to understand position the department have for Sapeth and Sapeth’s preference on if they should stay out of his way or not.

Sapeth thought for a second as it was a realistic question. and he could appreciate a good question. Despite what the Academy liked to say, he had found that there were questions that were better left unasked.

“If the improvement is directly related to your current duty assignment, work with your immediate supervisor. If it’s for the ship in general, you may bring it to me. But I’d, encourage, you to work with your immediate supervisor on the proposal before bringing it to my attention.”

Lt Sapeth - Chief Engineer

“Perfectly reasonable. Working up to that point may also help with clarification along the way with extra points of view or possible adjustments before ideas come forward fully.” Aurelian nods respectfully.

Sapeth nodded. “Anything else Ensign?”
