Lt. Conner Reid, the USS Chimera’s new security chief, stepped into Alpha Sickbay and waited for some assistance. The sickbay was unusually busy today, perhaps a number of new crew had arrived and everybody was scheduled for the boarding physical at the same time.

He recognized 4 or 5 new crewmen that had arrived on the shuttle with him. He was anxious to get started at his new position, but patience was a virtue and Conner had a lot of patience. . . . .

Lt. Burcham and his team were working their way through the patients. He ended with the ensign on the biobed, and cleared them for duty, then asked for the next patient on the list. “LT. Reid, Chief of Security.” The ensign at the desk told him. “Thank you ensign.” He replied and turned toward the Chief Security Officer. “Good day, Sir. Welcome to the Chimera, I apologize, we are busy with new people, I am Chief Medical Officer Lt. Burcham, or Doctor Drake. I can help get your physical done on biobed 4.” He stated to Lt. Reid pointing at the biobed.

“Pleasure to meet you, doctor,” Reid replied as he moved toward the biobed.

Taking a seat, he continued. “Yes, there were a number of new crew on the shuttle that brought me in. What’s the occasion? Just a lot of transfers, or something more sinister? You didn’t suffer a lot of casualties on the last mission, did you? There wasn’t a lot of new security personnel on the shuttle.”

“It’s just that time where we get new officers from the academy, and a handful of the personnel change ship assignments. Some find it boring to be assigned to the same ship their whole career, while others get promoted and there is no slot available for their rank on the ship.” He explained as he looked at the vital signs on the biobed. “Vitals are showing up good, has there been any new pain or medical issues since your last checkup?” He asked switching back to finishing the physical.

“Just the normal bumps and bruises that come with the training,” Conner replied.

“I don’t know, I kind of like being on one ship. You get more of a feel like it’s home, and the crew becomes family. You get to know everybody’s strengths . . .and weaknesses, their personalities and idiosyncrasies. . . . who you can count on when doing a job and making sure it gets done right. I’d think you, as the doctor would have that same kind of thinking, or am I wrong?”

“Oh yes, I don’t want to leave this ship. I know most of the crew, and their medical history, and the rest, I’m trying to learn, to treat them the best that I can.” He answered. “Although, even my path in starfleet hasn’t been that smooth, I started in the security field and was on a different ship, before changing careers to medical.” He continued as he read the charts. “It looks like you are good to start as well.” He stated.

Conner slid off the bed and replied, “Thanks for the all-clear, doc. i’m anxious to get to work.”

With that, the security chief nodded and exited sick bay.

Lt. Burcham nodded back and walked into his office and started working on the computer.
