As Vega stood outside the door to the ship’s counselling office, her heart pounded like the steady thrum of the ship’s engines. Anticipation and apprehension wrestled within her, swirling in a mix of emotions. She had contemplated this moment for weeks, knowing deep down that seeking counsel was a step she needed to take. Yet, time and again, she had found excuses to postpone it, allowing the pressures of duty and routine to be a priority over her well-being.

Today, however, felt different. The weight of her thoughts and feelings had become too heavy to bear alone. She knew she couldn’t continue to ignore the whispers of doubt and turmoil that lingered within her mind. It was time to confront them, to unravel the tangled threads of her psyche and find a path forward.

Summoning every ounce of courage she possessed, Vega took a deep breath, inhaling the sterile yet comforting scent of the ship’s interior. The corridor stretched before her, empty and silent, save for the soft hum of distant machinery. With trembling fingers, she reached out and pressed the chime, the sound resonating through the quiet space like a beacon of determination.

As Keitah waited inside the counseling office she prepared herself mentally to move as efficiently as possible through the counseling session with Ensign Dal.

Suddenly, the familiar chime echoed through the room, signaling Vega’s arrival. Keitah straightened in her chair, her senses heightened with anticipation of their first meeting. She glanced at the door expectantly, her hands resting calmly on her desk as she extended an invitation for her to enter the room, “You may enter, Ensign Dal.”

Lieutenant Naisyr
(Counselor)

As Vega stepped into the counseling office, her emotions surged like a tumultuous storm within her. Anxiety gnawed at her insides, twisting her stomach into knots. Depression weighed heavy on her shoulders. A sense of loss loomed large in her heart, echoing with the absence of something she once had but now seemingly lost. Uncertainty clouded her thoughts, casting doubt on every decision she had ever made. “Lieutenant” she said in greeting.

Keitah observed Vega’s entrance with curiosity. As she stepped forward, Keitah noted some tension in her posture.
“Please, have a seat, Ensign Dal,” Keitah said gently, gesturing towards the chair opposite her desk. She waited for her to take a seat before she began.

“Thank you for coming, Ensign,” Keitah began, her voice gentle yet firm. “This session shouldn’t take too long unless there is something on your mind you would like to discuss. In any case, I’m here to listen, to support you in whatever way I can. Whatever you’re comfortable sharing, know that this is a safe space.”

Lieutenant Naisyr
(Counselor)

Taking a seat opposite the counselor’s desk, Vega shifted uncomfortably, feeling the weight of her doubts pressing down on her. She had always prided herself on her strength and resilience, but lately, she found herself questioning everything. Doubts crept into her mind, casting shadows on her sense of self. Was she truly in control of her own destiny, or was she merely a vessel for the memories and experiences of her previous hosts?

“Thank you for seeing me,” she began tentatively, her gaze flickering with uncertainty. “I… I’m not sure where to start. There’s just so much on my mind lately, and I don’t know how to make sense of it all, I feel like I’m losing myself not Dal but me Vega.”

Keitah nodded, her expression empathetic as she listened to Vega’s words. She could sense the weight of Vega’s struggles and the depth of her uncertainty.

“It’s okay, Vega,” Keitah replied softly, using her name to reassure her that she was seen and heard. “Take your time. You’re in a safe space here, and whatever you share will be kept in confidence. You mentioned feeling like you’re losing yourself and not Dal.but Vega? I must admit I dont quite understandwhat you mean.. Can you tell me more about that? Also what specifically is troubling you?”

Lieutenant Naisyr
(Counselor)

As Vega sat across from the counselor, her nerves clenched like a fist in her stomach, tightening with each passing moment. Opening up about her inner turmoil felt like navigating uncharted territory, a daunting prospect she wasn’t sure she was ready to confront. Yet, the gentle encouragement from Lieutenant Naisyr spurred her to take the first hesitant steps. “I… I’ve been struggling lately,” she confessed, her voice barely above a whisper. “Since I’ve been joined, and more recently, I’ve felt like I’m having difficulty identifying myself. It’s… it’s harder than I thought it would be. I feel torn between what I understand as a joined Trill and my commitment as Dal and who I am as an individual, as Vega.” Her words hung in the air, heavy with the weight of her uncertainty and self-doubt.

The struggles of being joined were not foreign to her, though she couldn’t claim personal experience, she had dealt with several newly joined Trills. One in particular was a young Cadet named, Aza, who had come to her in the Academy when she held an officer there.
“It’s okay to feel overwhelmed by it all. Adjusting to a new identity, especially one as complex as being joined, takes time and patience. How long ago did you get Dal, your symbiont?”

As she listened to Vega’s answer, Keitah got up from her seat and went to the replicator. She ordered two cups of herbal tea. When they were done, she brought one back to Vega, “I want you to know that it’s perfectly normal to feel torn between different aspects of your new self, especially after being joined. Your experiences as Dal and as Vega are both valid and important. We can explore ways to integrate these aspects of your identity and find a sense of balance.”

She paused, giving Vega a moment to absorb her words before continuing. “As for what specifically troubles you, I’m here to listen without judgment.”

Vega took a deep breath, grateful for the counsellor’s understanding and the comforting presence of the herbal tea in her hands. The warmth seeped through her fingers, offering a small measure of solace amidst the storm of her emotions.

“It’s been about… two years since I was joined with Dal,” she replied, her voice wavering slightly. “At first, it was exhilarating, experiencing the memories and knowledge of my previous hosts. But lately… lately, it feels like I’m losing myself in them. I can’t seem to separate their personalities from my own anymore. It’s like… like I’m fading into the background, overshadowed by the echoes of those who came before me.”

The admission hung heavy in the air, mingling with the steam rising from the tea. Vega struggled to articulate the depth of her inner turmoil, the fear of losing her sense of self-consuming her thoughts. Yet, there was a glimmer of hope in the counsellor’s words, a reassurance that she wasn’t alone in this struggle.

“Thank you,” she murmured, meeting Lieutenant Naisyr’s gaze with a mixture of gratitude and vulnerability. “I… I want to find that balance, reclaim my identity and honour the legacy of Dal. But… but I’m afraid that the more I try to hold on, the further I slip away.”

Keitah nodded empathetically as she listened to Vega’s words, her heart going out to the young officer who was grappling with the complexities of being joined. Sitting back down in her chair, trying to sort out the many thoughts in her own head, Keitah took a sip of her own tea, as she considered Vega’s dilemma. It was a delicate balance, guiding someone through the process of integrating their past lives with their present identity. But it was a challenge she was more than willing to tackle.

“I hear you, Vega....um do you mind if I call you Vega?” Keith asked softly.

“Vega is ok” She said with a light smile, in truth she preferred Vega other Dal, despite the usual concept that once joined trill referred themselves by their joined name.

“It’s natural to feel overwhelmed by the weight of your symbiont’s history, especially when it feels like it’s overshadowing your own sense of self. However, I think it’s important to remember that you are not defined solely by the memories of your symbiont. You are Vega even without Dal, you are also Vega with Dal. In any case, before you were joined with Dal, you had your own unique experiences, thoughts, and emotions.” She paused, then said, “I have encountered this before. I am confident I can help you work through this. We’ll explore techniques to help you maintain your individuality while still honoring the legacy of Dal.”

(Counselor)

Vega felt a wave of relief wash over her as the counsellor acknowledged the complexity of her situation. It was comforting to know that she wasn’t alone in this struggle, and she silently thanked the universe for this small reassurance. “I think I would like that,” she admitted softly, her voice tinged with vulnerability. “I don’t dislike the idea of Dal and all the previous hosts; in fact, I appreciate their experiences. But I also want to preserve my own identity as Vega, the engineer.” Her words spilled out hesitantly, each syllable weighed down by the weight of her inner turmoil. “What techniques did you have in mind?” she inquired, her curiosity piqued by the prospect of finding a way to reconcile her past with her present.

Keitah nodded understandingly, “Of course you want to maintain your own sense of self amidst Dal’s memories. One technique we can explore is mindfulness. By practicing mindfulness exercises, you can learn to ground yourself in the present moment, allowing you to separate your own thoughts and emotions from those of Dal’s memories.”

After a slight pause she continued. “Additionally, we can work on visualization techniques to create a mental space where you can distinguish between your own identity and the memories of Dal. This can help you establish boundaries and maintain a sense of autonomy while still accessing the wisdom and experiences of your symbiont.”

After a slight pause, Vega absorbed the counselor’s words, finding a glimmer of hope in the techniques being offered. “That sounds… Simple enough,” Vega offered tentatively, trying to muster a sense of positivity amidst her uncertainty. “What do I do?” she inquired, eager to begin the journey toward reclaiming her sense of self.

We’ll start with some simple breathing exercises,” Keitah said, guiding Vega to focus on the rhythm of her breath to anchor herself in the present moment. “Here…place your hands facedown on my desk and inhale deeply, feeling the air fill your body with air, and exhale slowly, releasing any tension or distractions.” Keitah demonstrated the technique, her own breathing steady and controlled.

Vega followed Keitah’s instructions, placing her hands on the desk and closing her eyes. She inhaled deeply, trying to emulate the counsellor’s steady rhythm. The air filled her lungs, grounding her in the present moment, and as she exhaled slowly, she felt a sense of calm wash over her. It was a small but welcome respite from the whirlwind of doubts and uncertainties that had plagued her mind. With each breath, she felt a glimmer of clarity, a renewed determination to confront the challenges ahead. “I think its work?” She sounded a little unsure of herself.

Keitah sensed Vega’s uncertainty. “It’s working just fine,” she reassured gently. “Remember, it’s natural for thoughts to wander, but the key is to bring your focus back to your breath whenever you notice it drifting.”

After a few more moments of practice, Keitah gradually transitioned to other mindfulness techniques, such as the body scan meditation, guiding her to focus her awareness on different parts of her body, starting from her toes and gradually moving up to her head. With each area of focus, Keitah encouraged Vega to observe her own being, allowing herself to be present in the moment. Next, Keitah introduced Vega to visualization exercises, encouraging her to create mental images of peaceful and calming scenes.

After they went through these exercises, Keitah checked in with Vega to see how she was feeling, “So what do you think? Remember, these techniques are tools you can use anytime to help you stay grounded and focused.”

Lieutenant Naisyr
(Counselor)

Engaging in the exercises with genuine openness, Vega sensed a soothing shift within herself. For the first time in what felt like ages, a semblance of peace settled over her. She hesitated before speaking, the newfound calm making her thoughts clearer. “It’s like… I can feel myself grounded, anchored in the present,” she began slowly, trying to articulate the subtle changes within her. “The overwhelming rush of personalities and experiences is still there, but it’s like they’re no longer crashing against the walls of my mind. They’re… muted, distant, as if they’re acknowledging the importance of focusing on the present moment.” She paused, hoping her explanation made some semblance of sense to the counselor, for it was a sensation she struggled to fully comprehend herself.

It was moments like these that reminded her why she had chosen the path of a counselor in Starfleet. Helping others find peace and understanding within themselves was a rewarding endeavor, one that she cherished deeply.

“It sounds like you’re experiencing a shift in your awareness,” Keitah responded. “Being able to acknowledge the presence of your thoughts and emotions without feeling overwhelmed is a significant step towards mastering mindfulness. Remember, it’s not about eliminating those feelings, but rather, learning to coexist with them in a way that promotes balance and inner harmony.”
She watched Vega closely, noting the subtle changes in her demeanor.
“Continue to practice these techniques regularly,” she advised, as she presented a warm smile . “The more you engage with them, the easier it will become to cultivate this sense of presence and calmness in your everyday life. And if you ever find yourself struggling, know that I’m here to support you.”
