The turbolift stopped at deck thirty three. The door opened and off steped a human looking woman. She stepped out into the corridor and looked around. A PADD in her hand as she used it to navigate the corridors of the deck to get to her location. She headed towards the psychological suite. Turning towards the door she stepped into the compartment. She looked thoughtful as she observed those around. The fiery red haired woman had her hair up in a braided bun. She looked around the compartment before she stood off to the side, waiting.
Lt.J.G Kevasi Tulbrad, CMODr. Tulbrad was approached by a dark-skinned, ebony-eyed Betazoid woman with jet-black straight hair that fell past her waist. Both her hands were behind her back as she said, “You must be Dr. Tulbrad, the new CMO.” Keitah as she removed one hand from behind her back and extended it in greeting with a warm smile.
Naisyr, Counselor
Tulbrad smiled in turn and accepted the hand. She gave it a firm grip and a smile. “I didn’t expect to run into another betazoid…” she says her face portrayed some pleased shock. Though she quickly recovered and nodded. “Yes, I am Kelvasi Tulbrad.” Her smile judt as bright as before, “A pleasure to make your acquaintance.”
Dr. (Lt.J.G) Kevasi Tulbrad“Likewise,” said Keitah. “I am LeKeitah Naisyr. Ship’s counselor. Why don’t we go into my office?” she said as she motioned for the woman to follow her. “Dr. Tulbrad, where were you stationed before you were placed on the Chimera?” she asked as they walked to her office.
Naisyr, Counselor
Kevasi smiled and nodded, and then followed the woman. She looked thoughtful for a few moments, as they headed onward. “I was on a ship called the USS Iyashi a Phoenix Class Medical Ship. I was quite happy that I happened to be assigned to the ship. I had heard reports that the Iyashi had saved me from the raid on Betazed when I was a mere infant.” She explained softly as they traveled. “I was raised on Earth.”
Dr. (Lt.J.G) Kevasi Tulbrad“So you served on the ship that rescued you as a child? What a wonderful coincidence that you were assigned to the ship. Was it your first ship assignment?”
Keitah always thought it was a shame that a Betazoid could not be raised on their home planet. Yes, Earth was great but they missed out on all the authentic culture of Betazed. “Have you had an opportunity to spend any significant time on Betazed?” she asked.Naisyr, Counselor
Kevasi nodded, she chuckled after. “It did seem as though it was a nice coincidence myself. It was actually, after my training ship.” There was a soft sigh and she shook her head. “I was adopted by two doctors that were contracted under the Federation. So I suppose I was put in a position that influenced my joining of Starfleet. My adoptive mother was a physician, and my father a surgeon. I pretty much went through regular schooling, then med school, and then joined up in Starfleet. I haven’t really had time or ability to try to visit Betazed. Maybe I will be lucky and a ship will bring me by it, and I’ll be able to visit.” She explained running a hand through her firey red hair.
Dr. (Lt.J.G.) Kevasi Tulbrad, CMOKevasi’s response was filled with a mixture of nostalgia and longing. Keitah smiled and a chuckle escaped her lips as well. “Coincidences are always amusing.” She said as she strolled beside Dr. Tulbrad.
Keitah also noticed her words conveyed a sense of gratitude and appreciation for the opportunities she had been given by her adoptive parents. She wasnt surprised that Kevasi didn’t have a particular longing for Betazed, but there seemed to be some hope of visting in her tone.
“I hope so. That way I can show you around.” Said Keitah. “Your adopted parents, are they human?”Naisyr, Counselor
Kevasi nodded. “That would be lovely, I would appreciate the tour. My parents… they are. So I’ve had a different upbringing than most I would imagine.” She chuckled softly listening to the councilor. “I heard it’s beautiful.” She said as a somewhat probing slightly offhanded comment.
Dr. (Lt. J.G.) Kevasi Tulbrad,CMOLeKeitah smiled warmly at Kevasi’s response. “Yes, Betazed is indeed a beautiful planet. It’s known for its stunning landscapes, vibrant culture, and the unique empathic abilities of its inhabitants. I’m sure you’ll enjoy exploring it when the opportunity arises.”
As they continued walking, Keitah’s curiosity got the better of her. “I hope you don’t mind me asking, but what was it like growing up with human parents? Did you face any challenges or have any interesting experiences?”
Naisyr, Counselor
Kevasi frowned just a little, and then she took in a small breath. “It was difficult at times. They knew what I was, they loved me without question. But… sometimes, well it was difficult on them. Not just on them, but on the children I went to school with… and such. There are not many Betazoids on Earth to my knowledge. So while they knew about our telepathic abilities… it doesn’t make it easy. Especially from a young one who doesn’t know exactly how to control them? It caused unique, interesting… and sometimes disturbing scenarios. No one can help their desires, or sometimes what they think. It led me to grow up quickly. Some are better at hiding it, others are like open books as I’m sure you know. It could cause some discourse, especially when extremely private information comes into the hands of a child which knows nothing of what it means… and trying to find out that information… well… I’m sure you could see where that would go.” She said, as she walked, her hands gesturing as she spoke to emphasize some of her points.
Dr. (Lt. J.G) Kevasi Tulbrad, CMOAs Keitah listened attentively to Kevasi’s response, attempting to understand the challenges she had faced growing up with her unique abilities in a predominantly human environment. She nodded empathetically, recognizing the difficulties she must have encountered.
“I can only imagine how challenging it must have been for you,” Keitah replied with a compassionate smile. “Growing up with telepathic abilities can indeed be overwhelming, especially when you’re surrounded by individuals who don’t share the same gift or have a deep understanding of it. It must have been quite a journey for you to navigate those situations and find ways to cope.”
Kevasi gave a nod. “It was. However, I believe it was that journey and my difficulty that led me to be who I am today. While I may not have been able to remain an innocent child for long, it did teach me how to empathize with most people as I could see their reasons… ultimatly it could make me good at negociations.” She chuckled softly.
She paused for a moment, contemplating the implications of such experiences. “I know, from my own experiences, how the unintentional exposure to private thoughts and desires could create misunderstandings and potentially lead to uncomfortable situations. However on Betazed we are taught from a young age how to control our abilities. It’s admirable that you were able to grow up quickly and adapt to those circumstances with little or no help. It takes a lot of strength and resilience to face those challenges head-on.”
Kevasi nodded once more, and chuckled softly. “It is through adversity one learns and tests the mettle. It sometimes happens that those who are untrained become the natural master of a discipline.” She added. “It does take away one’s innocence quickly. However I learned many things. Usually made me good at tests.” She gave a small chuckle once more.
As they approached the Counseling suite, Keitah turned to face Kevasi, her expression showing support and understanding. “If it’s not too intrusive, is there any specific incident or experience that stands out to you from your childhood? Something that shaped your understanding of your abilities or influenced your approach to them?” she asked gently, curious to learn more about Kevasi’s personal journey.
Naisyr, Counselor
Kevasi looked thoughtful for a long while. “I think that my parents believed me to be human at least until my telepathic powers developed to a certain degree. I mean, there are two key identifiers of our species, otherwise really we are easily identifiable as human. Not that I mind… given circumstances probably. But our eyes, how they do not have a discernable difference between pupil and iris could happen as a genetic mutation in a human. And our empathic and telepathic powers are the other identifyer. It supprised my mother how I could always pick up on their moods, and would often try to coax them into talking when I could feel the stress when it would overwhelm both her and father.”
Dr. (Lt. J.G) Kevasi Tulbrad, CMOAfter entering Keitah’s office, Keitah gestured towards the comfortable seating area, featuring two chairs and a small coffee table. As Keitah settled into one of the chairs, she nodded, fully engaged in the conversation. She understood the importance of the moment as Kevasi opened up about her experience with her parents and the gradual discovery of her telepathic abilities. The weight of this aspect of Kevasi’s journey was palpable, and Keitah sensed its significance.
Kevasi noded and headed towards the indicated sitting area, she sat down gingerly and folded her hands in her lap. She looks relaxed enough, as she gets comfortable slowly sitting back in the chair. She took a few moments to look around the office.
“It must have been quite a revelation for your parents when they realized the true nature of your abilities,” Keitah remarked, imagining the mixture of surprise and perhaps even confusion they must have felt. “But it’s heartwarming to hear that you had such a strong connection with them, even before they fully understood your gifts. It speaks to the power of empathy and the depth of your emotional intelligence.”
“It was, but thankfuly they didn’t love me any less… or treat me different or well they tried. It would be hard not to when you learn such details. They are good people, I couldn’t have asked for anything better. Some things we learn, and they taught me that with the gifts I have, I have the responsibility to do good with it. Which I try my best to do.”
Keitah took a moment to consider the impact such experiences could have on a young person’s understanding of themselves and their place in the world. “Growing up with the ability to sense and respond to others’ emotions can be both a blessing and a burden,” she reflected. “It can provide a deep sense of connection and insight, but it can also expose us to the pain and struggles of those around us. Did you find it challenging to differentiate between your own emotions and the emotions of others when you were younger?”
Naisyr, Counselor
Kevasi nodded, “Absolutely. I still see my ability as a gift, even if I have learned that we all have it. I am glad we live in the times that we do, if it were a few centuries earlier… I am sure that I would have been bullied and teased to no end. That would have made it even harder. There were a few times when I felt the emotions so strongly I though that they were mine. Some people are way easier to read than others… and children seem easier than adults… maybe it is because most of their emotions are so near the surface already… Either way yes sometimes I couldn’t tell the difference.”
Dr. (Lt. J.G.) Kevasi Tulbrad, CMOKeitah listened attentively as she pondered on the gift that Betazoids possessed and the challenges it presented. She understood the relief that came with living in a more accepting time, where differences were more likely to be embraced rather than ridiculed.
“I have not personally experienced all the challenges you have but I can only imagine how overwhelming it must have been at times. It is no doubt a testament to your resilience that you were able to navigate through those experiences. You will have a challenging role here on the ship. I recommend that you take time for myself, finding moments of solitude, reconnect with your own emotions and establish a sense of grounding when you are able to. It is what I do as well. Meditation and deep breathing exercises have become essential tools for me. They allow me to create a space of stillness amidst the noise of others’ emotions.”
She continued with a slight chuckle, “I try not to use my gift when I am speaking to beings in sessions but instead try to learn to pay close attention to the subtle cues and body language of people around me. I must admit, It’s still a work in progress and hasn’t completly gone my way but I am still optimistic I will master it. By observing non-verbal signals, I could gain a more accurate understanding of the emotional landscape.”
Kevasi nodded. She looked thoughtful for a long time as she listened to Naisyr. “I use to do that a good bit as a kid, it was part of my studies of Aikido. It helped alot. I have not had much time to be able to do so in a few years, however I think when I get some time I will do so. I had a friend help write a program for me in hopes I would be able to use it. I wanted to try it on one of the Holodecks in the Academy, however I had been unable to. So I still have it saved in a hope to test it. The program is designed to remind me of my old dojo, I am hoping that the familiar sights sounds smells of sorts will help ease me back into it.” She explained thoughtfuly. “I understand, I try not to use it unless given permission or in dire circumstances.” She nodded in agreement.
She paused for a moment before continuing, “Given your experiences and the unique insight you possess, have you ever considered using your telepathic abilities to help others in a more formal capacity, especially those who have had similar experiences as you have?”
Naisyr, Counselor
“I wouldn’t be opposed. There are things that in our lives we must express, but find that we can not. I would believe that being able to use my telepathy to aid them in expressing what they could not. I have not had much training in the ways of psychiatry, or working professionally with the mind in that capacity but I believe that if I have the ability to and the chance to help someone… then it would be a valuable opportunity for me to do so.”
