The Bipedal lizard looked at the group for a moment. “I have never know the Orzions number to be inferior to a dozen, you are outnumbered. I have seen their weapons first-hand, you are likely under-armed.” He glanced at the side arms that the Federation officers carried. “But, as I said, if by my life or death I can return the gems I shall. By your words, you have taken the same oath.”

“When you are ready.”

“Well we should be getting some reinforcements from our ship as we head that way, which will help. But never underestimate a Marine. We are used to people throwing us into impossible situations,” Kate said with a chuckle.

“Lead the way, and our reinforcements will join us on the way.”

2nd Lt Hawkins - Marine CO

The Nelay Marine carried both a trident and what seemed to be a rubberband powered projectile weapon. It likely was as effective in air as it would be underwater. But in either case, it was certainly not a match for a phaser and it’s range couldn’t be more than 40 - 50 meters.

The trip to the mountains would take several hours, but they were carried on carts pulled by animals that resembled horses for the first 10 kilometers or so. After that the Marine, Talkrit, suggested they move on foot. “Perhaps we can sneak up on them. It did not work the first time, but without surprise I don’t know if we can succeed.”

From their current vantage they could see the mountain, and the trail leading to what seemed to be a fortress gate carved/cut right into the face of mountain. Details were difficult to determine with the naked eye.

As they stopped from their vantage point and looked out at the fortress, Kate motioned for her marines to hunker down. “Alright Talkrit, about how far are we from the gate?”

“2500 meters. I stopped here, because in another 1000 meters, ” He pointed. “That’s where they laid their beams of fire on us. We couldn’t even see them.”

She motioned for two of her marines to come forward so that they could hear the information. They were going to have to scout out the area to know the best way to attack.

As he pointed they could make out the faints hints of scorch marks. “There weren’t even bodies for the most part. Poof, nothing to return to the sea. Fewer than ten men and women returned.” The terrain about the road was rocky and under normal circumstances it should have been excellent cover.

“Demons of smoke, the green devils, how could they have seen our approach, caught us in the crossfire so easily.” He shook his head.

“They’ve set their weapons to vaporize,” Kate muttered as she shook her head. They just upped their anty, and she didn’t have the cards to call, yet. Hopefully the Chimera would be able send them reinforcements soon.

“My guess is that they have sensor relays in the area, or some sort of triggers, so they have an advanced warning. Though 1500 meters is one hell of a shot,” and not something easily done by even her marines. “Spread out, and start scanning the area. Let’s see if we can find any traps.”

Pulling out her tricorder Kate started scanning the area to see if she could find any hidden traps, sensors, anything that would give their position away to the Orions.

It didn’t even take a moment, there was indeed a sensor net, both passive and active. There were interconnected tachyon beams criss-crossing the area 1500 meters out to the entrance way to the mountains. The tricorders had more difficulty noting the passive systems that seemed to include periodic sensor sweeps that could detect them even this far away, but it was unlikely since they were under cover behind a the rise that Talkrit was using as protection verse being spotted by line of sight not knowing that it would help verses scanners at this range.

“About time,” Kate said muttering under her breath as she looked at her scan results.

=^= Hawkins here Commander. We are at a nearby fortress, helping to reclaim it from Orions for the locals. I am backing my team away slightly, and transmitting you the coordinates. =^= Kate adjusted the coordinates to be down the far side of the rise, hoping that it would keep the team beaming down out of view. As she closed her tricorder she motioned her team to back down the hill, towards where she ha directed the team to beam down.

2nd Lt Hawkins - Marine

The blue lights of 5 people transporting in appeared and gave way to the forms of Starfleet officers. Sara took in the terrain and then stepped over to Kate. “Lt Hawkins. My team is an additional five, including myself. You said we’re taking back a fortress from Orions. Any more details than that? Any locals coming with the team?”

OOC: Just for clarity’s sake there transports had to occur one at a time due to the loss of the dilithum crystals and warp drive. The security team beams down without an issue with that adjustment.

Talkrit opened his eyes in shock. “What kind of magic is this?” He questioned as he reached for his spring based rifle. He never brought it to bear as he stared amazedly at the new comers. “Ghosts, rising out of fire and light.”

“We are reinforcements, come to aid Lt Hawkins, and you, I assume, in retaking the fortress.” Sara gave her remark a second thought. “I am Lt Cmdr Sara Kiernan. With me is Ensign Asani Neribi as well as NEs Chano Amangual, Nick Yemana, and Ron Harris.”

“I told you that we had a few tricks up our sleeves,” Kate said grinning at Talkrit. She turned towards the Commander and snapped off a quick salute. “Yes Ma’am, we’ve got ourselves a bit of a nice little situation here. The Orions have taken advantage of the local hospitality and have hunkered down in the fortress just over the rise. They are looting the place for the local resources, plus some gems that are priceless to his people,” she said getting the Commander up to speed quickly. Time was counting down, they had to have seen the transporter.

Talkrit hissed appreciatively. “Perhaps there was some truth to your boasts. With tools such as these, your six might wield the power of hundreds. Which is what , you’ll need.”

“Haven’t had time for much reconnaissance yet Commander. We just got on scene, but there are sensor traps between here and the fortress. We can wait till dark and sneak our way in, taking them out as we go. Or how lucky are you feeling today Commander?”

As they spoke there was a dull roar from the mountain top. A mid-sized ship lifted from a place they could not see spun for a moment and sprung to high impulse heading towards space.

“We’re running short of time.” Sara muttered as she watched the shuttle depart. “Neribi, scan that shuttle. I want an approximate number of Orion onboard. Lieutenant. Have you mapped the area covered by their sensor traps? We don’t have time to wait for nightfall. However, cover of darkness can be created during the day by shadows. It’s a matter of strategic maneuvers. Their numbers have already been diminished” Sara pointed to the shuttle. “If we can get close enough undetected, we may catch them sufficiently by surprise.” Sara surprised herself with strategic thinking. The science officer was figuring out how to lead.

OOC: Sorry this is so late. I was sick for a few days there.

The ship was far larger than a shuttle, It was almost 100 meters long and 35 meters high. It had a duranium hull and at least moderately powered sheilds as it rejected scanning from the hand tricorders that the crew held. Other things notable was twin warp nacelles, but weapon and deflector hard points, and an overall bulky construction that implied low tech methods, or a cargo ship of some sort.

Kate shrugged, “A decent map, but I was seeing some passive sensors, so we still might hit something that we aren’t aware of. We are only going to get a big of shadows though, not enough to give true cover to our movement, and we would be limited by where the placements of the sensors are. If we are short on time, I think we are better off with a distraction. Get two men up on the top of the hill, lay down heavy covering fire, and the rest of us make a run for the wall. Once we get there we burn a hole through the exterior wall on the side. They are going to be expecting us to come through the front door.

“It’s not pretty, but we don’t have much time.”

Talkrit looked at Hawkins for a moment. “And how do you expect to burn through half a meter of stone. I see no explosives, no ram, or ballistae. It would take a dozen workers two days to even start to break through that.”

“Our weapons can be set to vaporize solid matter. Not as quick as explosives, but a lot quieter, and with a lot less risk to bringing the whole structure down on top of you.”

“Much like the O-rize-on.” He paused as he hissed. “Similar weapons… similar technology. So much in common…” He weighed what he was learning each and every moment they spent together.

Sara stopped. The science officer and the XO weren’t mutually exclusive. She withdrew her tricorder. “Sensors aren’t just meant to detect people. A signal could also set them off. Perhaps, Lieutenant, if we set off all the sensors at once, we would be able to move freely, because they would likely exit from the front door to begin a search while we approach the back. If we move fast, they’ll never see us coming and will have limited their numbers by sending out a search party. Whereas, as soon as shots are fired for covering fire, they tighten security and shoot back. Maybe even send a team to find the origin of the gunfire. We may be found, and lives may be lost.” Sara scanned for the sensor traps. “All I need to know is what they’re sensitive to, and we can trip them.”

The system was not particularly complex although it was through. The interconnected tachyon beams operated as an active motion sensor that would even detected cloaked objects. The beams were so straight forward that there was no obvious way to spoof them. The passive sensors were jammable, but that would reveal that they were being jammed. Thus revealing the attack was coming.

1500 meters was a long distance on food and would take nearly ten minutes on foot and that would be at a near run.

Kate nodded. “Or if they see everything going off at once they might just disable the sensors. It would depend on how often they get triggered.”

Looking around a bit, Kate turned back to the XO. “What do you want my team to do Commander? Depending on what that ship saw, we might have been spotted anyways.”

Neribi merely listened to the exchange, she didn’t have anything much beyond what was being said to add, instead she kept her eyes peeled on their surroundings for anything pertinent to highlight while the XO and Lt. Hawkins figured out a course of action.

They’d likely have to make some sort of move soon.

“Ok. Here’s what we do. These are simple tachyon based sensors.” Sara’s eyes flitted back and forth. “A tachyon beam could confuse the sensors. Either trigger them all simultaneously, or create a field for us to cross.” =/\=Kiernan to Chimera. Prepare a focused tachyon beam targeted between our present location and the fortress ahead of us. Fire on my mark.=/\= “Everyone gather yourselves. We’ll be moving soon.”

=^= Commander, what is going on down there? =^= Sarah asked as she looked over at Sheriye. She wasn’t even sure if the Chimera could fire a tachyon beam.

=/\=Captain. We need a few minutes of ground cover. There are sensor traps set up all along our path. They’re Tachyon based. If the internal workings are designed to react to changes in a tachyon based field, the addition of new tachyon beams is a change their computer might not be ready for. It might trip all the sensors with information they don’t understand.=/\=

Sarah raised an eyebrow. Not much warning, she really wondered if the Commander had even bothered to look at the status of the Chimera before heading to the surface, because she wasn’t sure if they could even create a stable tachyon beam.

“Lieutenant, see if we can generate the tachyon beam that the Commander is asking for.”
