Just as it was expected that newly assigned junior officers would report to their department heads to receive their permissions, codes and places on the rosters, Fin knew she had to report directly to the Captain. When she stepped onto the bridge, heads swiveled in her direction, a question in their eyes. She looked at the officer manning the command chair and spoke. “I’m here to report for duty.”

He nodded and pointed toward the ready room door. Fin inclined her head in thanks, walked over to it and palmed the chime.

“Come in.” Sarah was behind her desk finishing up the last of the fitness reports for her crew, almost done with the paperwork so that they could get on with their next mission. “Give me just a minute to wrap this up…”

It took just a few more moments before she signed off on the last PADD and set it down on her desk.

“I’m sorry about that. What can I do for you?”

Captain Allen - CO

Still standing, hands clasped behind her body, Fin waited until Allen looked at her before speaking. “Lt Fihnrilkk’Hob”ledn-ardol reporting for duty, Sir. I am your new CIO.” She watched the Captain’s face as she pronounced her name. It was the same look she got most often. Since proper pronunciation made sounds not only on the exhale of air, but also on the inhale, most people were stymied when they thought they had to repeat it.

“I usually go by Fin, Captain.”

Sarah nodded. She could remember almost every alloy that was a part of the ship, but she was not very good at remembering names, though she was working on it. “Well Lieutenant Fin, perhaps one day we can sit down and you can walk me through how to pronounce your whole name. But in the meantime, please have a seat,” she said while gesturing to one of the chairs opposite of her desk. “I trust that you had a good trip here.”

After seating herself, she looked across the desk. “The trip was very ordinary, Captain. Nothing exciting to report except I did learn how to play a game with various gemstones and cards called Shine, Double, Nothing—at least that’s what it translates to.” Fin was quite relaxed for someone meeting their Captain for the first time. However, the casualness of her body language belied the readiness of every muscle to respond immediately to a negative situation.

“Interesting. I’m not sure if I’ve ever played that game myself. But tell me a bit about yourself Lieutenant. What brings you to Starfleet?”
