“Fleet Captain and Commanding Officer of the USS Atlantis, they really do let anyone take command these days!” Teased Oliver upon seeing his old Academy friend Kelly Bordeaux and flashed a mischievous smile. Having just walked into the Captain’s ready room most Ensigns would be nervous but not Olly, though he was an Ensign he had served his years within Starfleet more than most lieutenants. For Olly he had a rocky start with the whole ‘Dominion War’ thing and threw himself into enlisted life a little too easily before finally taking up the officership that was offered at the Academy, only to then decide he wanted more academic scholarships and took to the University of Tartu for Botany and Ecology.

Kelly looked up from her desk hearing a voice fill the room. A smile filled her face as the sound of the voice matched the person she hoped it would have been. “Olly Loughton,” she drew it out slow setting her stylus down. “You are like a blast from the past,” she got up and moved from around one side of her desk towards Olly. “I thought you had given us up for dusty books and academia?” Coming up next to him she reached out giving him a quick hug. If Perkins saw, he would probably site one hundred and fifty rules as to why a CO should never interact with a crewmember in such a fashion; however, Perkins never saw how she had greeted her COS by falling off a ladder and would have had a coronary on the spot witnessing Ian and Kelly at the Turquois Mountain Resort. There would be plenty of times to drop last names, ranks, and the customary yes sirs and no ma’ams but this was a time to show the crew that aside from being a captain, she was still just plain Kelly Bordeaux.

Breaking the fast greeting, Kelly moved across the room towards the replicator. “Have you moved to the more civilized drink of coffee or are you still drinking coffee’s wanna be annoying sibling? Hot or cold?”

“Oh no, I will still have an iced tea please, somethings never change.” The room he stood in was decorated and a contrast to most Captains ready room with ornaments which would to most be just that, ornaments but Oliver knew of Kelly’s first relationship such as a unique old earth baseball jersey, a sport the group often indulged in during their time off together. Olly hard one just like it. He knew of it so well he was there during its conception and had heard about its troubled ending so seeing some of Ricks things was a little bizarre to him, then again bizarre was Kelly Bordeaux, in a good way of course. “Nice to see so much history in one room, How are you Capi-tan Bordeaux?” He asked emphasis on the rank.

Kelly laughed at hearing the pronunciation of her rank. Way too many times they had made fun of the rank, usually during a secret drinking party in the basement of one of the lecture halls where their select group of cadets played poker until the early hours of the night. The slur of her rank had nothing to do with disrespect but a private joke. Life in the academy was an uphill battle most days. On a geology trip to Yosemite National Park, she, Rick, Dante, and Olly saw the vertical peak called El Capitan or El Cap for short. Its steep vertical formation reminded the group of two things. One, that if they made a wrong move they could plunge to their death if they were not careful. The second was a goal to stand at the top and show all those that doubted them they were going to be as great at Captain Perkins and his lot one day. “Are you talking us or the things in this room,” she laughed bringing over the drinks and sitting down at the desk gesturing for Olly to take a seat.

Captain Kelly Bordeaux

“Both” He laughed taking the drink. The seat she had pointed out was one of those typical Starfleet styles boring, drab and uncomfortable the total opposite of the person who owned the room. “I don’t know whether or not to be sitting to attention or just lazily relaxing.”

“Yeah I ordered some IFEA recliners but after the rolling ready room table incident and the playground plans I just sent him I am avoiding telling Drayke he needs to find a way to bolt them to the deck plates,” Kelly waved off the conversation as if Olly had been a part of it from the start.

He chose a good medium and simply just sat with his legg crossed and resting on his knee. “Someone had to go and get an Academic degree who was going to feed all those fresh new minds that would be Starfleets next generation, I always did have flair for teaching.” He sipped his drink in his right hand and gave a flurry of jazz hands with his left.

As if a bolt of lightening shot out from her PaDD, Kelly could barely hide the exclamation of pure joy
She felt welling up inside her. The fifth grade science teacher‘s resignation of banning field trips still burned sharply in her ears. Mrs. Camila Bolton had seemed like such a kind and gently lady. That was until she verbally recanted the antics of Maybelle Spunklers class during the last field trip. Olly said he loved teaching. Before he left Kelly would work a trino they field trip into his security rounds.

The truth was Olly loved teaching but the thing he loved and missed the most was being among the stars in any capacity, he had even considered joining the merchant fleet but eventually chose Starfleet, again. “So hows she treating you this girl of yours? Atlantis is a nice name, a lot of history and mystery behind it. Fitting really for its Captain, I noticed you have a new last name” Olly now held his drink with both hands as he eyed her across the rim.

“After I fumigated Perkin’s moth ball stench from the halls she seems to be treating me right.” The evilness of Kelly’s grin showed she had one upped the Admiral once again. The rivalry between Admiral McLaren and Admiral Perkins was still clearly a raging war with Kelly and her crew antagonizing it along. Perkins was a thorn in the side of anyone that sided with McLaren.

Olly laughed, he knew the names but not the history behind them. Ever since they left the Academy and took their own paths the class of ‘78 hadn’t kept entirely in contact, though every now and then he may receive or even send out updates on them especially whenever any of them got promoted.

“As to the last name....you know UI don’t ever do anything easy,” she let out a huge laugh leaning back in her seat. “I kinda am courgaring it with Ian but he kept me from blowing ol’ Reggie out of the airlock so he’s a good influence. He’s also the Diplomatic Chief which keeps me from either causing a diplomatic incident or let’s me send him in to out it out. We got married about eighteen months ago when he booked me a weekend at a de stressing spa resort. The brochure did not have full disclosure that by signing the bill you also got married. It was some non federation world so like the bulletins from HR says proceed at your own risk. What is life without risks though huh?”

“You’ve not changed one bit, you always were the risk-taker of the group so it does not surprise me one tiny bit” Olly took a long sip of his drink trying to think of what time of man it would take to have tamed her and not lost a limb along the way.

Kelly took a breath and gave Olly a half smirk. “What about you? Is there a Mrs Olly you failed to mention yet?”

Kelly Bordeaux.

Waving his hand up dismissing the notion, “Oh please. You know me I’m useless when it comes to women! Do you not remember Abigail Pinewood? I don’t think she’ll go near a science lab or an arboretum ever again after I tried to create a hybrid plant of her favorites!” He chuckled placing the glass on the table, “How was I supposed to know that combining a Pinguicula with a Rose would create a five-foot man-eater”

Choking on her drink, Kelly brought a hand up to her mouth and nose as she coughed and jacked up the liquid she had been trying to drink before bursting out in laughter. “Oh my god I forgot about Gabby Abby,” she struggled to gain composure as the happy memory flooded to the forefront of her mind. “I lost fifty bucks that day your Ferocious fauna latched into her head and started sucking on her like a lollipop. It was worth it though to have ten minutes where that girl wasn’t going on and on about you. I mean she had it bad,” Kelly laughed harder. Olly was a catch and the full package. He was smart, witty, and fun to be around. Olly was everything Abby Pinewood said he was and more. The problem was Abby was out to become Mrs. Loughty when everyone was at an age where life was too exciting to move into a house with a white picket fence.

“What did happen to her? Last I saw her she was storming out of that lab with nectar globs all over her hair?”

Letting the memory linger he picked his drink back up and finished it. “Maybe one day though, I am getting on a bi. I think my mother would be very disappointed if I didn’t give her any grandchildren.”

Oliver Loughty

“Oh good lord don’t get me started on that topic,” Kelly waves a hand at him. “I mean my mother still is refusing to call Bruce her grandson. I told her when I can legally tie a kid to a tree in the park like I do with Bruce I will have a kid. You do know about Bruce right,” Kelly instantly realized how much she and Olly might have to do. The three foot Asian monitor lizard she “shared custody” with Dante was something relatively new. It had been only five years since they got Bruce but so much had happened in the past five years Kelly wondered if somehow that slipped under the radar.
