Medically cleared and ready to work, the half Orion female headed for Security. She stepped into the room and smiled at the two behind the desk. “Hi, I’m Lieutenant JG Angelina Markeson. I’m supposed to check in with the Chief. Is he available?” Her dark black hair was pulled back in a bun and her green skin gave a shine to her hazel eyes, the green flecks highlighted in the lights of the bay. “So any advice before I see him?” She was quick to make friends and hoped that she could make friends quick enough on the ship to stave off the rumors that were such a misnomer among the half breeds of her race.

Ensign Kholl looked at her and said “Welcome aboard.” and he pulled her credentials and then nodded. “Commander is in his office. As far as advice? Um… yeah. Don’t stare. He’s a big Orion guy. Can’t miss him.”

Kholl, Security

She winked at him. “Thank for the advice.” She then leaned over the counter as if sharing a great secret. The whisper wasn’t exactly quiet. “In case you didn’t notice, I’m not a small Orion girl.” She winked again and smiled at him. “Thanks.” She turned and moved to the door and rapped on the door.

Kholl shook his head and mumbled “Why doesnt anyone listen…?” and went back to work.

At the knick, a low rumble of a voice half-baked “Come in!” and the door slid open.

On first glance, it was like any other office. Some shelves with various things scattered, a few mementos of the Chief’s probably, and the standard small meeting area. But as one’s view moved further I to the room and reached the desk at the back, things changed. The desk was half again as big as a normal one. Which was odd, because the figure seated behind it looked normal in comparison. It took most people a second or two to register that the figure was not, indeed, normal. He was truly massive.
As Angelina entered, he stood. And when he finished standing, he was noticeably over seven feet in height. Yes, he was an Orion… but he was muscular even for that species. His arm were most likely as big around as her thighs, and she was no small specimen. He looked at her as she came in, emerald eyes flashing as he said “You Markeson? Been expecting you. Take a seat.” and he reached across the desk to offer her his hand in greeting.

Like everyone, her eyes widened. But unlike the others, she wasn’t as surprised as most. “Well, give your boy a raise,” she came over and shook his hand with a huge smile on her face. “You are a big thing, aren’t you, Chief?” She laughed and took the offered seat. “I would say you should put something in your boarding bio, but honestly. I would love to be a fly on the wall when others see you. Lemme guess, girl friend is three feet four inches?” She nodded as she sat and her smile was genuine.

He looked at her and said simply “Five-nine, actually.” and he tapped his desk interface and pulled up her file. After a minute of review he looked up and leaned back. “So why are you here, Lieutenant? Why the Atlantis?”

Mardusk, CoS

She smiled and nodded at the woman’s height. “Nice… congrats.” As he asked about her, she half shrugged. “Honestly, it was here or Earth. My last Chief, Donnelly, said I was perfect for what he called ‘special units’. I didn’t want to go back to Earth, so he recommended here. You are deep space, and not just some medical ship floating around picking up wounded. I’ve read about this ship. You guys have been thru some heavy stuff. Lots of it is redacted or simply not there, but there is enough to give rise to the curious side of me that wants to know. I’m no adrenalin junky, I give you my word. But I don’t see a reason to get all this training to go back to Earth and watch diplomats cross the Senate Lawn three times a day.” She laughed softly.

“Earth is a good place to go for quick advancement. Be seen by the right people, uniform sharp… you’d be a Commander in like five years. Out here? Ship like this? Not a lot of exposure. Lots of down time and boredom, with spikes of possible death and destruction. And our exploits arent all that. Most is just standard operations.” and he paused and then said “Did Donnelly say anything specific about this ship? I know him, and he’s not one to wag his tongue.”

Mardusk, CoS

She smiled. “I’m not a pomp and circumstance kind of girl. Most don’t want our ‘finely tanned skin’,” she used both hands to gesture to their green flesh, “around their precious delegates. So yeah, keep my nose clean and in a couple years more I’m a Commander and watching other watch the fluff heads. Not a big fan of rank.” She laughed and stuck her hands up in surrender. “Now don’t get me wrong. I like a promotion just as much as the next person. I just mean I prefer to choose a place I can get the trill of my job, rather than red carpet it and have it handed to me.”

Mardusk nodded and then said “And to my question about what Donnelly said…?”

Mardusk, CoS

“Sorry, Chief. He said that when I got here, I was to see you, keep my nose clean and not clock anyone who didn’t try to hit me first.” She smiled and shrugged.

Mardusk nodded and looked back down at the file. “Ok, then… training. What do you need more of? Where are your skills the weakest?”

Mardusk, CoS

“I think hand to hand is my weakest. Weapons I’m fine with. But it’s straight fists that I’m not great on. How and where to strike. I took the basics in Academy, and since then I’ve managed to hold my own when we sim, but I honestly believe in a true life or death situation, it’s probably my weakest position. Unarmed, I mean. And depending how much we do boots on ground, probably just running stamina. I can do 2 to 3 miles no problem, even with a gear pack. More than that and I know I’m not my best.” She wondered just how much she was gonna be tossed down his ‘points’ line for those admissions. But he asked… that’s all she could think of.

Angelina

He nodded and said “All right… I’m gonna put you in mandatory hand to hand training. Three times a week, three hours each. To be done on your time off. And within the next week, you have to go to the phaser range and qualify. I know you did at the Academy, but this ain’t the Academy. Depending on how well you do there, you’ll either be a Range officer… or you’ll do remedial weapons training. Duty assignments are based on weapons proficiency. Higher you score, better your post. Anything less than 85% is failure. And before you moan, yes I know the Academy pass is 70%. But again… not the Academy. If you get a perfect score, that’s another discussion entirely about Bridge training and Away Teams. Get a perfect score on the weapons training and pass an advanced hand to hand proficiency trial… there may be a very special discussion available at that time. Till then, you get patrol of deck sixteen, third shift. Questions?”

Mardusk, CoS

She smiled. Donnelly had been right, this was a man she would respect, did respect already, and could certainly get along with. As he mentioned the remedial training, she nodded. “Yes, Sir… three hours, three times a week on my time off. Got it.” And when he mentioned the Range, she got a huge smile on her face. Pistols and long arms were her strength. It was one of the things she had focused on more than anything else both in the Academy and on Donnelly’s ship. She had gone into security figuring her green skin would make her a front line grunt. The fact it hadn’t had just been a bonus.

“I understand. And I came all the way out here for this. Not for the Academy.” When he asked if she had questions, her smile fell slightly. “I do have one question. Are their any other Orion females on board, and do you happen to know what the general feeling it towards us? The fact I’m half rarely gets noticed before most folks run. The assumption being that I’m gonna go all smoke and mirrors and control their minds.” She tried, and probably failed, to keep the edge of vehement rage from her voice. “Guess I just need to know if I should avoid folks a while till they know I’m harmless or if I don’t have to worry about it.” Her fingers flexed but she didn’t ball them up. And two breaths later, she was already calming down again. The flash hadn’t lasted this time.

Mardusk looked at her for a long moment and then for the first time he grinned slightly. “I’ve been on this ship for two years. In that time we’ve probably had a dozen or so Orions, male and female, come through. It was a problem once… once.” and he emphasized the point with a single green finger jabbed into the desk. “I don’t tolerate racism. Not of any kind. And the entire crew knows that. And most are also smart enough to know that only full blood Orion women have the pheromones. To your question, we have three Orion women on board. One is a Communications officer, one in Engineering, and one in Medical. People don’t stare here. They know better. We have around a thousand individuals here from almost a hundred different species. Green skin ain’t that big a deal.”

Mardusk, CoS

Despite the fact she wasn’t angry anymore, there was still a visual dropping of tensed shoulders as she smiled. “Thank you, Sir. That means a lot. And I won’t let you down. I’ll be ready for my range test in 48 hours, Chief. I ask for that time so I can get used to the ship’s weapons. Like people, they each have quirks. Once I know them, I’ll be ready. As to the scrapping skills, I will work on being ready as quickly as I can to your satisfaction. I can’t think of anything else, Sir.” She smiled and nodded to him respectfully.

Angelina
Security

He nodded once and said “Hope so, Lieutenant. Get everything done. When you are ready, come see me. If you can pass my tests, I may have another job for you. So get on it. Dismissed.”

Mardusk, CoS

She nodded. “With pleasure. Thank you. Oh, one more thing, Chief,” she smiled as she reached the door, “Thanks… for taking me and giving me the opportunity. I know you could have fought the request.” She nodded once and moved back into the may security space. Moving over to Kholl, she leaned on his desk and tapped his arm. “Hey… he’s not that big when he’s sitting down,” she winked and patted his arm and turned to head out the door with a smile on her face.

Angelina

“You havent seen him at the bar, yet.” and he smiled at her and winked back before resuming his work.

Kholl, Security

She laughed as she hit the door. “Touche, Ensign.” As she exited, she glanced back, “Can’t wait to see.” She winked at him just before the door closed and her laughter walked down the hall with her.
