USS Atlantis

Main reception room Perkins meets Rinker at the Christening of the New USS Atlantis D

OCC. okay you don’t have to RP this if you don’t want to. I was just trying something past the boring meeting or conference. I am going to set up a scene just to get it started. If you don’t like it please erase what I said about what you were doing and create your own setting. I will role with it. I am doing these all simultaneously so that people have a chance to post if they want to. I also went into your bio and pulled the stuff paraphrasing it. I wanted it to seem like Perkins knew of it but allow you to elaborate. If I got anything wrong we can just lead me where you need it to go.~Kate.

Admiral Perkins surveyed the room. Kelly’s crew seemed distinctly loyal but there was always one. One officer that could be tempted to see the benefits of a casual relationship and the perks random updates could bring. Information was always more powerful than weapons. As he surveyed the room Perkins debates where to start. He had the dossiers on everyone. Now it was time to play on the cracks in their armor. Power was all about promises and Perkins was all about promises.

Of the many people on the Atlantis, Perkins debated about approaching the counselor during the reception. Heathcliff Rinker was not only a counselor but also once held the position of Assistant Clinical Director of Star-Fleet. This meant he was a even match to Perkins in the art of innuendo and slippery words as was most people in command. You never got anywhere in politics without promising things and the upper echelons of Starfleet was pure politics. Who got the newest ships, best new academy graduates, cushy appointments with spectacular views at headquarters, and the like were all based on who knew who or what you knew about someone. This is what made counselors such a difficult lot. They were trained to spot the lies from the person sitting on the couch opposite of them selling a tale of it was not their fault they had an affair, that the reason they didn’t get the promotion was because the boss didn’t like them, or some other nonsense. Perkins would have to be careful.

“Commander Rinker,” Perkins said extending his hand to the counselor, “still not missing being a desk jockey I presume?” The move by the Commander to leave the Assistant Clinical Director position officially had been that Rinker wanted a more hands on approach to the people that served Starfleet. This at least was the polite way to say he lost interest in the monotony and politics of a desk position. The unofficial reason still eluded Rinker. The man was a war hero, respected, and had a lot of pull. Rinker had been guaranteed the position of Director of Psychological Services when his boss retired yet Rinker stepped down. There had to be more motive than boredom. Even if there wasn’t serving under Kelly Bordeaux had to make the man ready for a transfer by now. The trick now was to find out what Rinker wanted and find a way to promise it but never deliver. Having Rinker in his pocket was almost as good as a CMO or XO. While not as easily as a CMO could swipe Kelly’s command with a flourish of the stylus, a counselor could lay the seeds to doubt a commanding officers mental fitness and at times a rumor was all you needed to set a wildfire.
