“I don’t know do you think it is too much,” Lexi sat on the edge of the counter in the science lab letting her feet dangle. They were moving in slow circles as if this movement could channel all her excited pent up energy out of their body. With the weight of her palm pressed to the table beside her, Lexi could lean forward, back, and to the side as she talked with her colleague.
“I dunno, Alex” George Munroe said absently. He was only half-listening to her at this point. Alexandra Garfield was any man’s dream. She was smart, beautiful, bubbly and most importantly single. At least that was what the roster stated when she joined the USS Discovery. The fact everyone soon learned was Alex was hung up on some schumuck halfway across the galaxy. Whoever this guy was he had to be as dumb as a box of rocks or a practicing celibate not to get the drift she was crazy about him. John, Sam, Paul, and Fred had taken their chances and come back from their date empty-handed and needing a very cold shower. Even Raoul, the ultra savvy shuttle pilot from Brazil who seemed to be able to make women’s clothes fall off faster than tequila, came back muttering things in Portuguese even the universal translator could not convert to English. Why George thought he stood a chance against the Discovery’s closer no one ever knew, still the man had donned his best and met Alexandra Garfield for lunch. Everything was going perfect until he mentioned Ensign Kane and her debacle in attempting to recreate an outback biome to study the effect of how many poisonous creatures could live in one tank and survive. The end of that story was only two creatures survived: the funnel-web spider and this Ensign Robins who dominated the conversation afterward.
As George went about monitoring his experiments and Alex prattled on and on about her newest scheme where she wanted to be subtle but not too subtle in sending a message to this Ensign Robins, the man could only think about how Alex and Spidey were similar. Both seemed to be able to trap anything that stumbled into their territory and both had a powerful venom that stopped you in your tracks instantly. Spideys was a powerful neurotoxin and Alex’s was a blow to your libido you could not recover from.
“So is a dozen too much or too little. I can’t figure out if I should be subtle and go with a rainbow assortment or stick to our tried and true aquamarine,” Alex leaned over grabbing a PaDD as she spoke. Banging out a search query for the items she needed, Alex let her mind drift to the last time she spoke to Chris. Her days were so lonely not having anyone to share her life with. Her parents and sisters did not get the Starfleet life nor her geeky side with science. The people she had met since graduating were nice but no one could even half slide into the mold Chris had emerged from. The few guys she met were nice enough but didn’t have the flair Chris did. They also seemed to assume every ‘hey want to meet up in the mess hall’ meant ‘let’s go out on a date and see what happens’.
Lexi was not against dating someone but it had only been two months since she broke up with Noah. She also could not fathom ever having someone in her life that wasn’t Chris so until she got her private life in order with him, there was no way she would get a public life with others going.
“A dozen is not going to be subtle,” George cocked an eyebrow at her. Listening to her scheme George set down the Padd, crossed his arms, and leaned against the other counter. There was no point in fighting a losing battle or attacking straight on. Maybe the way to Alex Garfield was to encourage these stupid ideas so that this Ensign Robins put out a do not contact order against her. It was a cheap and sleazy move but might work and then maybe she would be open to entertaining someone other than him as a topic twenty-four seven. “You know what go for it. I’d say do four dozen. You knew him for four years right. Make it a dozen a year.”
“Really,” she said as her face lit up showing she was in love with this new twist.
“Heck yes. I mean I would be speechless if you did that for me; until I called you to say thank you,” George winked at her. The smile Alex gave him put a smirk on his face. *Take that Raoul. Accents aren’t everything. By tomorrow she will be mine as I console her over the event.” George probably should have felt bad but he didn’t. Alex was the top target on the ship and he had a lock and load on her once she enacted this crazy idea.

“I hav a de....live..ery,” the Congo delivery guy grunted as the backed into the room pulling and tugging a thick wad of strings. “For a Chris,” he planted his feet and with a final yank broughttwo dozen brightly colored aquamarine ballons into the room. There was a slight bumping sound that echoes through the room as twenty-four latex monstrosities began to fill the air. “Robins. Is there a Chris,” he groaned batting a few from his face as he talked, “Robins here.”
“Hey what he Heh,” a colleague yelped as a large aquamarine floating globe smacked him in the face.
“Earl what are you doing. Keep moving. I can’t get in,” a second Congo delivery employee barked.
“Ricky Bobby it ain’t like this place is huge. Give me a second,” he belted out annoyed. This had to have been the stupidest delivery he had ever made. Well, nothing topped the firework delivery to the natural gas plant. Who would have thought a stray spark could have set the cargo off but then again. Earl and Ricky Bobby only delivered the stupid things people bought.
Not caring who was being hit in the head or vision blocked by the two dozen balloons he carried, Ricky Bobby moved farther into the small enclosed space so that Earl could bring in the rest of the shipment.
“Watch the air vents,” a shrill female voice yelled as the balloons began to bounce around more furiously being propelled but he constant stream of air pouring from them.
“Who the hell thought this…was…a good…idea,” Earl snapped clearly not happy at trying to get his load into the small enclosed space.
“Ensign Chris Robbins,” Ricky Bobby belted out again. To avoid the balloons turning into a hurricane of latex, Ricky Bobby pulled them lower so that they were now like a fog covering the vision field of many in the room.
“Ugh I just spilled the beaker due to the damn balloon,” a voice called out as she tried to bat away two aquamarine floating menaces from her face with a hand holding some liquid in a container. “Get those things out of here,” she snapped.
“Not without a signature,” Earl replied and then leaned back on a counter looking at a hot science tech. “How you doin’” he said with a sly grin.
“Chris,” several voices called out in unison.
Earl and Ricky Bobby,
Congo Employees. *We Relentlessly Provide You All The Things You Need.”Chris came passing by as he heard the shuffling in the main lobby entrance as he looked past one of the archways. This was not a sight he had ever seen since he came to the research facility. “I’m… Chris Robins.” he said as he walked in looking cautiously at all the balloons before smiling ever slightly. He knew instantly who this was from, it had been a quiet two months alone but he couldn’t deny this made him feel a bit more at home.

“Lucky you. Sign here,” Ricky Bob said extending a PaDD. “So what happened,” he asked Chris with a raised eyebrow. “Musta been really bad or they really hate you. Is it your spouse?” The balloons bobbed about and about now Chris would see a white piece of paper attached to the end of each one.
Chris couldn’t be smile as he signed the papers from the two men as he handed the PaDD back to each of them. Taking the balloons he looked them over, he saw there seemed to be notes on them each and opened up one of them he could find easily on the nearest string.
“Hey it’s me Genie, the light, brown hare! Remember that cave and how bored we were. Remember this quote and how it made me laugh. You: Well, here we are! Pismo Beach and all the clams we can eat! Me: What a way for a duck to travel. Underground. Hey, wait a minute! Since when is Pismo Beach inside a cave?” We are good at a lot but we were never good at impressions :P
“No it has to be a lover. There ain’t no way a spouse would spend money like this. They just lock you outta the house. Now a lover is gonna try to win you back spending stupid credits,” Earl added.
Earl and Ricky Bobby Congo Employees.
“Not quite… it’s my Wonder Twin.” he said with a small smirk before attempting to navigate back to his quarters, hitting and bumping into almost everyone along the way. He couldn’t deny this was a bit much but he suddenly didn’t care. He hadn’t messed everything up after all. ‘What are you doing Robins, she broke your heart. You can’t just let some balloons and a nice note win you over.’ Chris thought to himself as he came into the room releasing the balloons as they seemed to fill his quarters like it was the backstage to a new years eve party.
Grabbing another nearby string he took the card off it as he held it unopened in his hand, grasping in in his right hand as he pounded the tips of his left fingers as he stared at the card. Gently he opened it and began to read the next one.
“Never let your best friends get lonely. They might just show up at the place you work with four dozen balloons. You could call and tell them no don’t do it but too late.”
P.S. I hope no one has a latex allergy or you are the butt of a ton of condom jokes.
Taking a deep breath he felt his face grown warm and a smile begin to form from ear to ear as he let the message soak in. Looking around he could see that he was going to have a long night if he read these all. ‘You’re getting sucked into those pretty brown eyes Robins, don’t do it.’ came that voice in his head, this time though it was far quieter as he remembered every blissful moment he ever shared with his Lexi.
“This is going to be awhile…” he said aloud and slowly began tearing each card off their balloon string one by one.
Do you have the left one? I can only find the right and how can I go around without the other half of the pair?” A small photo would fall out of two feet. One clad in a short sock and the other sockless.

Quick open up your bag and eat a Reese for me. I know you have one. Down in the bottom. Probably all linty but its wrapped. If not suffer like you made me that time in Conversational Ferengi.. See how easy it is to dig lint out of a chocolate and peanut butter gob,
Quick what color are Anastasia Everlast’s eyes This clip however was hand written in almost microscopic print under a cut and pasted image of her face and ample assests.
As moments passed Chris sat in the middle of his bed, vision obscured by aquamarine latex as he bed seemed to be covered in small letters as each one was read, sometimes over and over again.
Holding the last unopened one he slide the envelope open as he took at the card, reading the words from his best friend with a sense of love and glee.
Knock Knock!
Who’s there?
Honeydew!
Honeydew who?
Honeydew you know who you should be calling right now? (Psst. It’s me)
Finishing the note he couldn’t help but feel a sense of renewal, things always had a way of working themselves out. Chris was unsure on many things but as he kissed the lettering that his Lexi penned for him herself he felt a small content sigh come over him.
In his deep sigh he would notice a faint smell. With all the cards opened and and laying about on the bed, there was the barest hint of perfume lingering in the air. Not a single card had a reference to it but it was a scent that he would know.
Ensign Lexi Garfield
“Computer remind me at 0730 hours to call Alexandra Garfield.” Chris said aloud, knowing the evening would be late for her he knew he couldn’t keep silent from his best friend much longer. Life may not be what he wanted, and he may never end up with Lexi in the way he wanted, but he was not going to let that stop him from having the best friend any guy could ever hope for.
