Taking the device in her small hands, she turned it over and studied it from every angle before pointing to the small adjusters. “And this is where you change the dose?”

“Yes,” Ryley acknowledged and put a hand up. “Don’t play with it.”

“I wasn’t,” Sowyn said mater-of-factly.

Sowyn handed it back. “I’m not scared of it. I’m scared of getting ill like some of the people our healers couldn’t save, but this will help. So… go ahead.”

“Good. No sense being scared of things like this when there’s plenty other things to be scared of in the universe. Your healers didn’t have the knowledge or expertise we do.” He took the device back.

“ I’ve got so bad news for you. You are going to get Ill kiddo it’s an inevitability. Your going to get Ill and your going to get hurt and it’s going to be horrible and painful and suck at times but doctors are supposed to cure and help where they can. And where they can’t that’s why we have bright people who ask questions and look for new answers to solve new medical issues and cases no one else can. Don’t be scared of it be clever.”

She pondered this for a moment and nodded slowly, though she was still deep in thought.

He tilted her her to the side slightly using her chin and tapped a point on her neck. “Do it yourself. Right there. Feel the ridged surface on the hypo. Put it to that spot and press firmly on that. You’ll need to hold it there until the pressure releases and you might feel dizzy afterwards like your tilting.”

Dalaira was watching quietly with more than a little bit of pride. After all, Sowyn was one of the first children born on Satalla and while their numbers were still small, she was a symbol of their future. Seeing her so engaged and thriving in their new and much larger social world was truly a blessing.

“Really? I can?” Sowyn asked putting her hand out again to take the hypo.

Feeling her neck for the spot he had showed her, she placed the hypospray against her skin. “Can you check I placed it right, please?” She was polite, but her tone was intense and filled with concentration.
