Sowyn smiled at Ryley, but there was a hint of nervousness. “Relann said I needed to come down and get a vaccination for something important. Something called… measles?”

“Did she indeed.” Ryley asked

“And I haven’t had much of anything myself, so I would do well receive this preventative treatment,” Dalaira added.

He looked up at the older woman and nodded his head slightly.

The girl chewed on her lip again.”Does it hurt?” she asked softly.

Looking back at the child Ryley considered his initial response which was to stoically go Yes. Terrifble horrible pain and then roll his eyes and add No you dolt. It won’t hurt. He did not do this however and instead shook his head slightly. “No. You might feel a bit off for a little bit afterwards but that will be gone in a couple hours.” He sighed, he was going soft in his old age.

He had explained vaccines to her on her first ever check-up in Sickbay, but it still weirded her out a bit. But that was mostly because Sowyn’s grandparents had died in the terrible pandemic that had hit Corsa long before she was born.

Waving them both to the biobed where he had left his tricorder he hit the recalibration and waited. “I’m going to check you out first before I give you the shot. Whoever wants to go first hop up.”

“Go on, ” Dalaira urged with a gentle smile.

Sowyn got up with some help and sat up straight, gazing her violet eyes intently at Ryley. “I like science. And medicine. Do you have to be good at certain things in school to become a doctor?” she asked curiously.

Ryley looked up at her from his tricorder. He stared a second or two watching her then looked away again to his recalibration. “Depends on what sort of Doctor you want to be.” He said evenly.

He turned the tricorder onto the child and ran a quick general scan, used the biobed readouts to check the vitals matched then ran the scan again putting the device down on the bed and turning it so she could see the readouts.

“That’s your readouts,” He said individually pointing out each one. “This ones your heart.” He glanced around and locating his jacket on the back of the rolling chair nearby limped to it and removed his stethoscope. He returned and showed it to the girl. “Remember this? This also lets me hear your heart…in theory your heart rate visual there on the tricorder and up there on the panel should make a sound that is the same and feels the same.” He gave her the device and once she had it on put the bell over her heart and held it in place. With his free hand he gently took hold of her right wrist and indicated she should hold her palm flat before placing her hand over the pulse point in her neck and released her wrist.

He waited watching her and still holding the stethoscope in place. Then turned to look at the readouts and placed the back of his free hand on her forehead a moment without comment.
