As the shift change over happened around the ship Ryley found himself enroute to get the meal that wasn’t quite lunch as that had long since past but wasn’t really dinner either. As he passed an intersection some of the kids walked towards the main corridor and passed him on their way back to their parents no doubt. He glanced towards the direction they had just come from and grimaced at the memory of the three times he had visited the school rooms. Once had been to give a talk on germs(awkward) and another time to administer vaccinations (disorderly) the last time had been dropping off Summer’s kid and the drama that entailed.

He shook his head and walked on only to pause a after half a dozen steps and back track, ears perked for the sound that had grabbed his attention, head tilted, left eye screwed up he listened. There it was faint but present the unmistakable sound of music. He glanced around the deserted and eerily quiet corridor and followed it towards the main classroom.

Inside the main classroom the sound Ryley heard got louder. He would recognize it as Beethovan’s Fifth. It was clunky in spots as the player worked out the rhythm.

Upon looking in the room there was no one other than Ali sitting at the piano playing. She was totally focused on what she was playing that she didn’t hear anyone other than the music. She went over each section multiple times to work out exactly what she was doing.

Ryley stood in the doorway watching her play. He waited until she finished a section and spoke. “You are getting good at that.” He commented.

Ali looked up “Thank you Uncle Alex.” she said “Can you play with me?” She asks her uncle “I’m still working out exactly how to play.”
