Having finished all of her mandatory meetings, she headed to the office of Captain Styxx. Arriving she pressed the button to let the Captain know that someone was at the door. She stood with her hands folded in front of her. She was wearing her basic duty uniform, she didn’t feel that her dress uniform was needed at this point, quite honestly she hoped that she would not need to wear it during her stay on the Atlantis…

Gilly

“Come in” came River’s voice. River’s office was not overly decorated it was simple and efficient with only a few things of note. As Gilly entered she would see the replicator directly in front of her and next to that a pot of proper full bodied coffee and a couple of cups. on a small table. The smell wafted through the room and out of the door. To her left was a large empty was with nothing but an old, burnt and holly poster, in a brand new frame. It read ‘My hero River, a presentation for Acheron ,middle school, By Lilly Styxx’ The poster was full of a photos of a young river, a young woman and a little girl. Really rather good child’s drawing of the marine insignia and armour and a few other inspirational quotes.

To right was River desk it was orderly and neat everything had its place. The only addition was a battered picture frame with a picture of a younger river, the same little girl and the same woman that was on the poster. Behind the desk stood river and behind her the flags of the federation and the marine corps. The only other things of note where a sword on display to the right of river desk, the sword was intricate and extremely well made. It had an alien writing engraved on it’s blade a sickly green tint coloured the blae ever so slightly and its sheath was well worn. The writing was of an alien language few knew.

To the left of Rivers desk was a shelf with a few nick knacks on it and a medal case. It was full of the standard medals but three stood out. One was the pike medal of valour, the other was the sontarin citation of the Romulan empire and the other was the order of Kahless of the Klingon empire.

“Ah 2nd Lieutenant Adams. Good to finally meet you.” River said her tone level and calm. “Help yourself to the replicator, or the proper coffee and take a seat” she added after she gave Adams a quick inspection with her eyes, never moving from her desk.

Mar. Capt Styxx (Marine OIC)

Gilly nodded “That coffee smells amazing.” She said making her way to the coffee “I’m glad to be here, Captain. I’ve been looking forward to meeting you. I’ve heard good things about you and the Atlantis.” She said and took a seat opposite River and took a long pull from the coffee cup and smiled as the warmth made it’s way to her stomach. “Please feel free to call me Gil or Gilly. ” She said leaning back and letting the cup rest on her leg.

Gilly

River nodded “Thank you. But for now until the men are used to you, in public I’ll call you lieutenant and you can call me Captain, Ma’am or Boss, although Sargent Freya may get a little irked. Boss seems to be her thing.” She said simply. River was telling Gilly off or being rude. It was just that River knew that change took time to get used to and she wanted to make sure everything as smooth sailing.

“Understood.” Gilly said understanding the situation, she was the “boot” of the team, even if she had been in service longer than most, she always gave people time to adjust to her and get as close as she would let them.

“In Private though River is fine.” she added taking a Swig of her Coffee.

“Of course Ma’am.” Gillian said

“I want to give you fair warning. So I won’t sugar coat the situation. This ship has just been attacked by a race of hyper religious aliens from outside our galaxy. they called themselves the galactic union. They boarded this ship, attacked the captain, where subdued and incarcerated, broke out, attacked Marine country then took hostages on the promenade. I killed one of them, our chief of security got the other. One just vanished and finally one of them is still onboard. A child, although I think she should be in a cell” River said her tone one of barely contained rage.

Gillian sat there drinking her coffee as River spoke, with an occasional nod. Her eyes narrowed “So where is this ‘child’?” She asked she never really understood the need to put children in a situation that could kill them…but this was a religious cult and they played by their own rules.

“I lost 7 marines and 12 more requested a transfer. They didn’t like being used as lab rats by star fleet.” River continued, pausing for a moment. “This isn’t an easy assignment and I am inclined to believe we haven’t seen the last of the galactic union. So I need every marine under my command to be ready and willing to jump into hell on my word. Can you do that?” River asked.

Mar. Capt Styxx (Marine OIC)

Gillian smiled “Capt Styxx, my last mission before transferring here had me dropped behind an invisible line of a race that we’re still not sure what they were. They had taken a small colony hostage and were systematically starving the people.” She said “Think something like World War II esque stuff. Myself and three other Marines were dropped in and told to secure the colony…” She looked at River “We secured the colony. You tell me to jump into hell, I’ll as when do I jump and what’s my mission.” She said “Those are the two things that I will ask each and every time. And if you don’t know…it’s recon until I know it’s not and a mission becomes clear.” She said openly and honestly “

Setting her coffee on the table “I can’t say that I have always been a fan of Star Fleet’s kid glove approach, I see the need for it. But as I see it, when that doesn’t work, they need to release the dogs that will get the job done and make sure that the ship and personnel on the ship are safe. I will tell you if I think a mission is bat guano crazy, but as I said before, I will jump into any hell you tell me to and I will try to make sure every member of our team makes it back alive.”

Gilly’s eyes were serious and dark, she had seen things that no living being should ever see, she had done things that no one would ever want to do, but what she did was make sure that the mission was accomplished and that her team came home.
