Jen was looking through the crew lists .. right after reports of damages that were repaired from their last mission. They had been substantial in no small way and the corps of engineers had had a field day with it. While not a record by any standard they were up there in their estimations of how badly the ship had been ‘broken’. A name popped up. CTO. And said Zachary Hartley had been aboard for a while now. Had he been that busy? There were others, the standard crew leaving and others coming on but the title sparked his interest and (in part, annoyance) at not having seen him yet. Something that should have been corrected some time back.

=^= Jen to Commander Hartley. At your convenience please join me on the bridge in the ready room =^=
- Jen, XO

Zach had been, embarrassingly, fighting with the largest of his travel trunks… the one with his extra uniforms, delaying his normal check-ins and had just stepped out of the shower when the call came in. Tapping the Commbadge on the table by the bed.

=A= Hartley here. Apologies for the delay, there in five. Hartley clear. =A=

Quickly drying his hair and body, Zach quickly dressed and after a final check in the mirror, hurried out to the Bridge.

At just shy of five minutes, Zach Hartley stepped off the lift and moments later hit the chime on the Ready Room door and waited.

OOC: Sorry for the delay. Monster busy past week just ate me alive! Finally returning to normal busy! LOL
OOC: I resemble that comment!

The door slid open for Zach. He would see the Andorian first officer rising from the table and moving around to approach him. To Zach he may appear less a Fleet officer but something more .. weathered. “Commander Hartley. Pleased to meet you. Come in. Help yourself to the replicator and take a seat.” He offered to shake hands; his was firm but of a sort who wasn’t that used to doing it.

Zach smiled as he entered and extended his hand to clasp the XO’s. It was a firm, confident shake and with a nod… the handshake was broken and Hartley grabbed a hot tea with lemon & honey from the replicator before he took a seat.

Zach would note Jen took a neutral seat about the table, not moving to the usual ‘power’ seat that the leads tended to take in meetings. Before him he had a mug and a PaDD lay flat on the table. “I just wanted to get to know you. What are your specialties and if you have had a chance to put them into practice.” He paused to let Zach take a seat. “For myself I was moved into Starfleet from being a Fleet Marine Colonel. So I’m still a soldier at heart. I’m good at moving pieces and a fight but beyond a surface knowledge of the characters who may be hostile I am not a subject matter expert.”

A soft grin crossed his features as he took a sip. “I can appreciate that. God knows I’ve taken a… different… career path.” With a shrug, Hartley said in a moderately relaxed manner. “After I completed a Masters in Aerospace Systems Engineering at MIT, I was a Holloway Scholar at Cal Berkley… receiving a PhD in Aeronautical Engineering in May of ‘86. Following UCB, Lucas Holloway offered me the position of Director of the Advanced Tactical Systems Laboratory at Holloway Heavy. Worked there for five years, mainly on their big orbital platform doing research into…” He smirked ever so slightly and corrected. “… let’s just say we worked on stealth systems. After that, I went to OCS in San Fran and joined Starfleet. Because of my education, I came in as an advanced status Lieutenant and Assistant CTO on the Mansfield. My CTO transfered shortly thereafter and I was promoted to Lieutenant Commander and CTO and…” He paused and took a sip. “… and that’s where I was when we lost the Manny. I…” Hartley cleared his throat before continuing. “… I was found a couple of years ago in one of the ship’s shuttle’s transporter buffer, and after reorientation and leave, I was assigned here.”

Hartley, CTO

Well that was clinical, Jen thought as he observed the casual response. Rather like he was practiced at it. He recalled an old retired soldier who, as it turned out, found retirement an exercise in boredom and came out of retirement to instruct recruits. He had a ‘pat’ answer when telling others about himself - a quick and dirty general history which Jen must have heard a score of times and more. This sounded a little like that. And it really wasn’t too much more than one’s record stipulated as well which, when one looked at it, said very little. Though he winced at the thought of being set in a transporter buffer for any more than seconds. That must have taken up a fair bit of counselor hours on that.

He paused to let that soak in. He had more schooling than Jen would ever have and highly technologically based. A good resume, but what of the person? “What happened to the Mansfield, from your perspective?” he asked. It seemed to Jen that Hartley had a considerable amount of ground time in (equating a station as essentially a small world) and limited field work. How did he operate under pressure that was not a schedule deadline?

OOC: Bump .. Gene
