Aria and the chief engineer, walked in silence through the corridors leading to the science labs. The weight of recent events hung between them, leaving little room for casual conversation. Each was lost in their thoughts, Aria considering the scientific implications of their current predicament, and Taran pondering the engineering challenges they faced.

As they entered the lab, Aria immediately moved to the central console. She activated the holodisplays with a few swift commands, and the room was soon illuminated by the soft blue glow of holographic projections. Taran observed quietly, arms crossed, his keen eyes taking in the various scientific instruments and displays. She began by bringing up a detailed representation of the Aetherial Expanse, the region of space they were currently navigating. The holographic map rotated slowly, showing the complex subspace distortions and anomalies that characterized the area.

Next, she pulled up a compound representation of Aethrilium, the rare and exotic element found within the expanse. The holo-display showcased its unique atomic structure, highlighting its distinctive properties.

“Aethrilium,” Aria began, her voice filled with a mix of awe and excitement, “is an incredibly rare element that we’ve only recently started to understand. Its properties are unlike anything we’ve encountered before.” Aria manipulated the controls, zooming in on the atomic structure. “Aethrilium interacts with subspace fields in a very distinctive way. It can enhance the efficiency of warp propulsion systems, reducing energy requirements and increasing warp field stability. Essentially, it helps create a more focused and directed subspace tunnel for our starship to traverse.”

She continued, explaining the theoretical mechanisms. “By influencing the curvature of space-time within the warp bubble, Aethrilium acts almost like a catalyst. It reduces the drag and resistance a starship experiences as it moves through subspace. This not only makes warp travel faster but also more energy-efficient. The real question is why it effected us so badly” She waited for an input.

After Kaden listed to the young ensign, he thought for a second and then responded, “Ensign, is the Aethrilium which is effecting us pure or could there be something else merged with it that is causing the interruption that we are seeing. Also, is there a way we can isolate the Aethrilium and get it either beamed off the Atlantis or contained to maybe stop the effect it is having on the ship? Just throwing some ideas out there.” Kaden waited for the response from the ensign.

She paused, contemplating the situation before swiftly entering a series of commands into the console. The display shifted to reveal the space surrounding their ship. “It seems that the Aethrilium hasn’t been mixed with any refined substances—certainly nothing like our own warp catalysts. I’m not detecting any foreign entities either,” she said, her brow furrowing in concentration.

“Aethr,” she continued, shortening the name for simplicity, “appears to have affected us in a way similar to an electromagnetic pulse, which can short-circuit electronics. Our systems are usually protected against that sort of thing, but we’ve never encountered Aethr before.”

She gestured to the holographic display. “This element originates from the local planet and the gas cloud we were hiding in. It’s not affecting us right now, but when the Narvhalarians ignited it, my guess is that we weren’t properly shielded against its effects. The Narvhalarians, on the other hand, likely have systems in place to manage Aethr—they’ve probably been using it for so long that it’s become mundane technology to them.”

She took a deep breath, her tone growing more serious. “Given our current state, I recommend we reach out to them. We’re stranded, and I’m not sure what will happen when their ship returns or what the effects of dropping out of warp might do to the Atlantis. It could be nothing, or we could experience even worse repercussions. We need their expertise—now more than ever.”

Kaden looked up at the young Ensign and responded, “Thank you for all the information. I am going to reach out to the bridge to have them contact Narvhalarians in order to see if we have a way to help negate the effects.” He then tapped on his comm badge and said, =/\=Lt Buchanan to Bridge. Could someone please reach out to the Narvhalarians and see if we have a way to negate the effects of the Aethrilium? I have reason to believe they might have something in place which might help.=/\=. Kaden then started running some additional protections in a simulator to see if any of them would help. Maybe a forcefield or something else, maybe even a way to transport the material away from the ship, to see if it helped. He did not want to try anything without doing some simulations first.

[bump for someone on the bridge. I tagged the XO but I’m not sure who is leading the officer on deck at the moment. I think the XO heard this and asked something but posted here]

=^=Bridge here, the XO is currently in discussions with a Narvahalrian delegation. Engineering is in the process of setting up an external communication link to their planet, which should provide answers to the questions we’ve all been asking. It might be beneficial for you to rendezvous with the XO on Deck 29.=^=

Ensign Three of Five worked in the background on the force field generators the XO asked for. He had just finished getting one fully setup and was now working on the second one, then he would sync them together to accomplish what the XO needed.
