OOC GM Feedback

Posted by Gamemaster Narwhal the nefarious (GMT) in OOC GM Feedback
Hey all!

It’s your humble GM here! I passed me first GM review (yay!) which means I’m one step closer to hopefully being your long term permanent GM!

Yay!!!

As part of that journey I recognise that it will take time for us, me as the GM and my reactive player led style and you the crew to understand one another and make an effective writing team!

I wanted to ask for your feedback, what would you like more off? What’s going well? Is the pace good? Are the sim direction posts to long or to short, anything you think off I’m happy to take on board, have a discussion so the way I write my story is with your interests and thoughts in mind!

feedback .. that can be dangerous :) But kudos for opening this thread

First .. the sim idea is good and certainly surprised us all by the direction it has taken and kept us guessing.

Two thoughts from the start of the show here that are lessons in hindsight, certainly to me for my GM experience tookbox. These are certainly things that are hard to see and are certainly not a criticism. You’ve put a lot of work into this and I am appreciative. Every sim one does makes us learn a little more about how things can work better, what may not be so good and where to focus our GM energies to keep things going. And that is ongoing and never perfect.

  1. When you had the wave hit the ship, a zealous crew (and this one acted that!) rather went to an extreme of injury where we still see a certain incapacitation of virtually all of us that I think has to a degree dampened play and potential action. That has I think slowed us up. In hindsight a caveat may have been in place that only limited characters should be debilitated? A matter of discussion or thought. I don’t think there is a perfect solution here offhand that wouldn’t possibly water down the severity of the issue you were working to present. That sort of event works better I think on TV. :)
  2. Options. Until you stepped in and got us up some power Kate and I had been discussing abandoning ship and trying our luck in escape pods. Just seemed like that was the only option barring divine intervention there as we really didn’t know what to do as nothing worked that we tried. Breadcrumbs on some options would have been helpful. I don’t know if you had anything specific in mind that if we had done X then that would have worked.

If you want to reply here or if you think DM is better please do so!

    Thanks!

I think you are doing very well for your GMT and learning lots along the way. Keep it up! I don’t find your narratives to be too long. I’ll have to keep a better eye on them now to get that feel. I think that is a very subjective question on post length. I know too much and people will typically skim it but too little and it can frustrate those who want more. It is that happy medium you will need to find that you find works for you and the ship you’re GMing. For me I try not to go over a couple of good paragraphs for moving things along in narrative. Dialogue is faster to read and follow and so can be extended at need. That said, that is my own personal rule. I can be wordy and I need to be aware of that, where others can say all that I did over the course of a paragraph in two sentences and be more effective at it. That said, description is different. When describing a scene you take all the space you need to tell that because that is where the characters are operating in and that is essential to know where they are.

Hope that helps!
Gene
