Science Labs

Tyler shrugged. “I’ve been here a while, I’ll give you that, but I’m not exactly sure just how qualified I’m gonna be…” He let his voice trail off. After the sabotage incident, many members of the science division already went out of their way to avoid him. He often found himself working alone, in silence. Perhaps being chief, having his own office, might not be a bad thing after all.

“More qualified than most,” Calloway remarked.

“There was someone I used to know,” Tyler said. “He was here on board with me a few years ago. Someone I cared about deeply. He always told me I would make a good senior officer, maybe even move into Command one day. He always believed I had more potential than I saw in myself. I’m sure if he were here now he’d be kicking me in the rear making me accept this position.” He smiled, the memory of Colin was always a good one, yet bittersweet, not knowing where he was or even if he was still alive.

“After all I’ve been through,” He mused aloud. Then he looked back over at Faye, who herself had endured much. “Do you really think this is a good thing?”

A shadowed look passed through Faye’s stormy grey-green eyes. “Who can say? I just mucked up my chance, and we never know how many of them we’ll get.” She was thoughtful for a moment. “I guess you just have to consider what the worst outcome would be and whether you could survive that. For me, I think I knew that I wasn’t ready to face that worst possible outcome. Maybe later, but not now. But you’ve had more time than me, more practice at passing through your days with a degree of normality. I think you’d be fine. For whatever that’s worth considering we barely know each other.”
