It was on top of them as their sensor detected it. Warp 9.92 (depending on what STF math you use) about 10 times faster than any ship they have ever seen. (I’m calling bs on that Voyager episode).

Before panic could set in the ship was classified as the “The Great One’s” Vessel. Comparatively small, immensely powerful, and with a commander as modest as he or she was omnipotent.

Shortly after came a call from the planet ..

“Standing by for beam up.” The Transporter room confirmed.

“Oh great its our friend Wayne Gretzky,” Kelly stated looking at her XO as they stepped off the transporter pad. “This time I will hold him and you knock him out,” she stated clearly irritated that the Great One now decided to show up.

Entering the Bridge, Kelly took the center seat and looked at the comms terminal. “If Wayne hasn’t hailed us, open a hail to him.”

Sometimes .. she just rambled and Jen was left wondering where that mind was going. It was both a perplexing and amusing thing - in mixed bundles and mixed times - when, after he was off shift Jen would actually look up what it was she was saying. Getting the connection, however, was not so easy at times. He wondered if this was to be so. “Wayne?” he asked quietly as he moved closer to the view screen to get a better view as though an extra 6 meters would make that much difference.

“The great one,” she nodded at the vessel. “When we first answered the comm be called himself the Great One. I told him that was Wayne Gretzky. He decides that was the name we would call him by. Comms open a hail to that ship,” she replied. “

The image of Wayne Gretzky appeared on the bridge. It appeared three dimensional and if it every had the occasion to touch an item, it would just pass through something he had no intention of interacting with and if he had the urge to make contact he would be able to.

A rather unimpressive human, Jen thought. He didn’t look ‘great’.

He glanced about eyes flashing momentarily. “It is interesting what you found on the planet. I don’t think you want to experience rapid evolution, so I’m uncertain of the value of your discovery.” It seemed that he had accessed the data they had collected from the planet almost instantanously.

He was inclined to wait for the Captain to answer that. Jen pondered the immediate response - was that the intention, rapid evolution? Did they do that on purpose? But to not good consequences by the look of it.

“Given the lack of value. You are in a very unsafe location..”

That was an understatement. Perhaps the Great One would be able to keep what was ‘unsafe’ at bay. Or help them to simply be gone .. but .. who were these Great Ones? Were they the success story on the rapid evolution and the Darkness the fail? Were they both sides of the same coin? The good here and the bad out there?

“Because you placed us here,” Kelly snapped before taking a deep breath. The Great One was powerful and the Atlantis had been in the path of the ellipse no different than the occasional bug on the windshield that had been carried along until it was flicked off. Kelly needed to calm her tone before Gretzky decided to take off again and leave then stuck here forever. “What exactly is the Darkness,” she asked no longer able to contain her curiosity.” The Great One would or would not help them return home. Her asking a question would not change their chances of returning home but it might explain what exactly happened here and if the Federation was the cause.

“I didn’t nothing of the sort, you got pulled into the graviton ellipse and I saved you before it dragged you to the other side of the universe.... although to be far 50,000 light years wasn’t ideal.”

“I think you know what the Darkness is. A disruptive, destructive, race that hyper-evolved themselves to be the dominant force in this region of space. From what I glean from your analysis,” how he knew what their analysis was - was unknown.

“They wouldn’t have made their most recent leap if your Genesis device didn’t add the planet wide regenitive effect. Not that you could have predicted that side effect.”
