She should have expected to be called to Bordeaux’s office after the woman met with Satis, but she’d hoped to be left alone. No such luck. At least she’d find out if he’d been honest with their Captain or not. If not, it was one more reason not to trust him and might play in her favor. If he had told the truth, then…then what? Aurra shewed the corner of her bottom lip as she walked the corridors towards the bridge.

“Then I might be stuck with him.” She said to herself.

“What?” A passing Ensign asked.

“Oh, sorry,” She smiled at the young man. “I was talking to myself.” He returned the smile and nodded silently. After another second or two they both set off in opposite directions with the doctor telling herself to stop talking out loud.

With a little luck, given that she didn’t run into Bren on her way to the Ready Room, Aurra arrived and smoothed her hair and uniform, then rang the chime.

“Come,” Kelly called out hearing the chime. Her tone was a little more formal as was her posture since this was a scheduled meeting and not a drop-in meeting.

The doors swooshed open, revealing the CO waiting for her. Aurra stepped into the room with no idea as to how Bordeaux was feeling about the meeting. Since Satis had been in her place only hours ago, she was pretty sure the meeting was about him, but she’d been surprised before.

“Yes, Captain, you wanted to see me?”

“Yes, take a seat,” she gestured across from her. “So Bren Satis came to visit me at your behest.” Kelly’s tone was neutral saying nothing more about the meeting other than Bren was there and because Talisse ordered him to come. Both doctors had impeccable records and were beyond qualified to hold their posts. The question before Kelly was could they perform their job responsibilities? She had heard Bren’s side. Now it was time to hear Talisse’s.

The doctor nodded–at least he had actually followed orders and reported to Kelly. The think to do now was to find out if he’d been honest about what happened. With a deep inhale, Aurra seated herself in the offered chair and crossed her legs. “Captain, I know the incident happened while we were at the academy, which was years ago, but he could have cost me my career.”

Kelly gave her CMO her undivided attention. She had done the same with Dr. Satis and Dr. Talisse deserved the same respect and consideration when telling her side of the story. Kelly did not need to be a Captain to know every story had two sides. It did not mean the sides had to be different; however, every side experienced it differently. She understood Bren’s side. Now it was time to understand Talisse’s. “Tell me more about that,” Kelly asked.

The incident was extremely private for Aurra. She hadn’t really discussed it with anyone, just kept it tucked away in her mind for years. “We met our first year at the Academy. Just a chance meeting in the cafeteria that threw us together when there was a lack of seating one day. He was witty and intelligent and he kept a commentary going about the ‘privileged’ students around us. I laughed so much that day. He did too. We just hit it off and became constant companions—best friends for 3 1/2 years until he tried to see if he could control me long enough to steal drugs from sickbay.”

Kelly’s eyebrows arched slightly before relaxing back to normal. That was a huge jump in the story. Kelly appreciated directness but it felt as if there was a lot being left out. “So what happened to change the nature from BFF to drug mule.” If Talissa was going to be direct, Kelly would follow her lead. “Three and a half years is a long time to nurture a relationship to obtain something one could find in the red light district on a street corner?” Kelly did not doubt the story. Bren had said the same thing. What Kelly was looking for was the differences in the two officers’ perceptions. Events were things that happened and then for better or worse were over. The perceptions and emotions around events were the hardest things to get over because emotions did not have cut-off switches. People felt things long after events which is what Talisse was dealing with now.

Did she hear slight disbelief in the Captain’s voice? Maybe, maybe not. Was she still hurt over the incident from years ago? Definitely. “He was recruited in our last year at the Academy. He didn’t tell me everything about it, but I know he was chosen because he was Betazoid. He spoke about the project in vague terms, so I don’t have all the details he does. I’d worked out that it had to do with mentally influencing others.” Here, Aurra took a deep breath and looked concerned. “You have to understand, Captain. During our years of friendship, I’d allowed Bren…I mean, Lt Satis, to enter my mind twice. It was easier in those two instances to allow him into my mind to understand what my words couldn’t express. That’s how I knew it was him once I broke free of his influence right before carrying the drugs out of sickbay.”

Aurra tried to physically relax as the subject matter of their conversation made her tighten up.
