Kelly wasn’t sure where the operations officer was on the sliding scale of the most recent conflict. She knew he had to be somewhere between burn the witch and can we convert her, yes we can but few people were all the way to the extreme of each group. Most were falling in the middle where they were not actively provoking her but keeping a healthy distance away. If Kelly had the time, she would have brought Jessa into the fold in microscopic increments but she did not have the time. During her last communique with Starfleet, she had been given strict orders. Get intell from the girl and learn how much was reality and how much was a fantasy about her claims. Usually, she would have been open with her crew about why she was going to be asking them to do things that felt odd; however, at times even she was not at liberty to say why she was giving orders. She had meetings lined up with most of the department heads individually forgoing her normal routine of handing out orders in a staff meeting. Today Tenzig Trainor was up and she was waiting for the chime at her door.

Tenzing had lost the formalities years ago. After all, he’s had far too many run-ins with Q, has been to distant galaxies more than once, and has even found himself at odds with an extermination race. Trainor shuffled up to the Captain’s Ready Room and pressed the chime. Not knowing what the CO had in store for him, the man waited somewhat patiently to be called in.

“Come,” Kelly clicked off her console and clasped her hands looking at the door where the Operations chief had just entered. Of all her meetings in the past twenty-four hours, Kelly had been excited for lack of a better word about meeting with Trainor. The operations chief was a juxtaposition of looks and intelligence that did not marry up. Physically he looked like a newly minted academy cadet about twenty years old and ready to take on the world. The only feature that did not match up with this assessment was Tenzig Trainor’s eyes. While he was quick to laugh, smirk, or smile, Tenzig’s eyes held the weight of his actual age which was more in line with the rest of the senior staff’s. She needed this change from the hostile to the humorous although when she gave Tenzig his orders, he might get a bit feisty.

“Tenzig Trainor,” Kelly replied with an upbeat tone no one had heard in the past twenty-four hours. “Please come have a seat,” she gestured to him.

“I have been meeting with the senior staff about our current situation individually.” Kelly did not expand past this. If Tenzig was going to tender his transfer this would be the perfect opportunity. If he was going to stay he would be asking for orders.

“I know you are getting reports and data from various departments but I want to compartmentalize the information.” Kelly grew more serious than she typically was during meetings. “It is not to pit the crew against each other like some celestial Thunderdome but to cover as much ground as we can in the next week. We have been ordered to the Vespan System. It is remote and isolated and we are to hold there until we receive further orders. Normally I tell you everything I know when I know it but for now, this is all I have been granted access to give you. Okay now to the fun part,” she smiled slightly.

“I need you to help me figure out what this is and does.” On the table was a jar that Kelly opened and took the lid off. Dipping her fingers into the clear gel-like substance, she rubbed into the tips of her fingers very slowly and very gently. “It is odorless, colorless, and has the viscosity of kid’s slime and completely harmless based on medical scans.” Scientists tended to be over-cautious or under-cautious. They rarely tended to be in the middle ground. By touching it and explaining it, Kelly assumed it would be enough for Tenzig to do the same. “I know you have seen some crazy things in your travels but have you ever seen anything like this?”

”…and we’re certain this isn’t some changeling?” Tenzing asked jokingly as he reached into the container to have a feel. After a moment, Trainor shook his head and removed his hand.

“Chicken,” she taunted him slightly with a smile before dragging her fingers over the edge of the glass jar and wiping it off. The clear but slightly bluish gel ran down the edge on the glass and re-incorporated itself with the rest of the liquid inside.

“I haven’t come across anything like this, though the Ark Angel may have a similar occurrence in their database, but where was it found?”

The man didn’t want to be anywhere near it if it did happen to be part of a larger living space creature.

“In the Caelum supercluster which is one point four billion miles from here,” Kelly wrinkled up her nose feeling frustrated with the situation. “It is part of the alien tech we now are trying to understand.” Turning in her seat, Kelly clicked on the wall PaDD and brought up a security feed from the brig. The feed looked normal as it played with a three-man security team monitoring the prisoners in the brig. That was until one of the armored aliens beamed into the Brig. As the alien drew their weapon, a substance with expelled and then attached to the security guards. The substance appeared to splatter on impact and then roll up the body as if gravity was not a factor before settling over the chest and face of the security guards incapacitating them.” Pausing the feed, Kelly looked at Trainor.

“This is how we know it is non-toxic and non-lethal. The security officers check out in perfect health. Almost imperceptibly healthier in fact. Their vitals were good and they are being held in sickbay but your job is to figure out what this substance is, how we use it, and what should we not do with it.”

Moving the jar closer to him, Kelly looked Trainor in the eyes. “Come on. Touch it. You know you want to.”

Tenzing rolled his eyes. “Captain, if I touch that and it knocks a few more years off, I may as well be in diapers.” The Ops Officer exclaimed. The man did find it a bit enticing, so he reached out a bit and stuck his hand in the jar. “Though clearly, we shouldn’t fling it unless we want to incapacitate someone....” Trainor said as he motioned to the security guard on the screen with the slime covering his torso. Tenzing kept his hand in the goo, waiting a few moments to see if anything were to happen.

“Tenzig,” she screamed his name out wanting to startle him as she could see him intently studying the goo. The instant he flinched the good seemed to harden like cement around his hand. It not only hardened but slowly seemed to be growing up the side of the jar like the blob from the ancient B movies in the twentieth century where a blob of jelly consumed a movie theater or the rest of the town.

“What the....!?” Trainor exclaimed, trying to remove his hand harder. This tactic only appeared to make the thing grasp onto the man’s hand even harder.

As the goo now made the small jar a part of his hand, Kelly leaned back and relaxed as if nothing was wrong. Watching Tenzing trying to extract his hand, Kelly took a sip of her coffee. “I am no scientist but the thing seems sentient almost. Notice how it reacted and is reacting to your panic about trying to get your hand out of the jar? Kinda reminds me of a Chinese finger trap once you get stuck in it.”

“Well surely it has abandonment issues then!” Tenzing responded. The Ops Officer temporarily gave up trying to release his hand and calmed down a bit. The glob didn’t harden until he got startled, so either the glob was started too, or was reacting to Trainor’s emotions. “Maybe once I’ve calmed down some more, it’ll release my hand,” He said.

“It is what happened with the bound security officers,” Kelly stated before bringing up a clip of the take over of the brig.

Playing it back, Trainor might not be interested in the way Jessa subdued the men but her words to the men. Snapping her hands into a fist, Jessa yelled out the words, “Contain and restrain”. Small ports opened on her knuckles spraying a thick oily substance onto the men. “Please please stop struggling. It is not going to hurt you I promise. It is what we use for crowd control and restraint. I am not going to hurt you.”

Kelly fast-forwarded the clip a few seconds before letting it finish playing it out.

Moving over to him, Jessa knelt down next to him. “Retract for communication,” she called out as she touched the officer’s lips.

“I concur that it has to be tactically activated in some form. See how when the struggling stops the goo loses viscosity?” Kelly nodded to the video clip and to the COO’s hand with the goo. “My question is how?”

Kelly Bordeaux CO

“Oh, I really hope this isn’t biological....” Trainor said with disgust, watching the slime fall back into the container from his hand, ” But, I’m surprised Petter or Gravel haven’t tried to find ways to weaponize it in the name of Starfleet.” Tenzing tapped the table a few times in thought, then looked back up at the Captain. “Has the doc taken a blood sample?” He asked. “I’m curious about the ports on the knuckles.....”
