USS ATLANTIS
Ensign Samuel A. McIntyreAfter now finishing two of his check-ins Sam exited the medbay and made his way down the hallway and took a left to a single door marked Ships Counselor, He pushed the button to notify the counselor and waited outside of her office.
Ensign Samuel A. McIntyre
Answering the chime was a woman with curly bright red hair, green eyes, and classic pale skin marked her as having a strong Irish Terran heritage. A very strong Irish accent flowed from her, “En McIntyre. It’s nice to meet ye. I’m Lt O’Farrell. Come on in.”
Immediately to the left of the door was a desk. A variety of places to sit and low tables dotted the rest of the open area. The right wall was taken up with wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling storage. Books, various pieces of art, and nick knacks covered the shelves. “Help yourself ta the replicator and have a seat.” O’Farrell grabbed a glass of tea off her desk and had a seat in one of the chairs.

As the door opened to the counselor’s office Sam entered the room and noticed the desk to the left of him and the ship’s counselor as she greeted him. Noticed her accent immediately as she spoke. ” And it’s a pleasure to meet ya as well, Lt. O’Farrell. Ensign Samuel McIntyre reporting for ship check-in mam.” As the military man in him immediately saluted her. Before they continued.

“At ease, Ensign.” Cara said meeting his need formally to an extent. She had already sat and did not stand again, but she gave him a warm smile. “Ya needn’t stand on such formality in this office. Do ya want anythin’ from the replicator?”
After he sat Cara spoke again, “Where are ya joining us from?”
O’Farrell
” Understood mam and no thank ya.” Sam switched gears from attention and took a seat across from the counselor.

O’Farrell crossed her legs at the ankles and relaxed back in her seat and then repeated her question. “Where are ya joinin’ us from, Ensign? Another ship or the Academy?”
O’Farrell
Hearing the question from Farrell Sam looked at her after he had sat in the chair. ” From the Academy Lieutenant.”

“Ah, out on yer first adventure then.” Cara had received notice of the new crew coming aboard, but the files were a bit slower and had only just arrived. That meant she had no others opinions, statements, or knowledge of the person in front of her. That’s how she liked it, to have the chance to form an opinion without influence. “What do ya think ya gained most from yer time at the Academy?”
O’Farrell
” To wander that honestly Lieutenant it was more of knowledge for me and what I need to for my path in Starfleet after I transferred from the Marines.” Sam looked at her confidently. ” Being 4th generation Starfleet and all.”
McIntyre Security Officer
Cara found that interesting. 4th generation Star Fleet, but he went to the marines instead only to transfer anyway. “Why did you join the marines?”
O’Farrell
” I joined the Marines Lieutenant because at one point I wanted to break the family cycle of being in Starfleet and also because there are some that would look at me differently and I wasn’t gonna be judged by family history. And even though I still went to Starfleet it was more of a sense of honor and tradition even though I stayed to myself there Lieutenant.” Sam stood up and walked to the replicator and grabbed a cup of coffee and sat back down. ” I know ya offered at the beginning mam at this point I think something to drink would be needed and I apologize ahead for grabbing the cup of coffee from the replicator.” Sam looked at her his demeanor was still a bit grim and yet friendly.
McIntyre Security Officer
“No need ta apologize for wantin’ a cup of coffee, Ensign. The offer is always open.” She tipped her head to the side and nodded slowly. “My sister is Star Fleet. Great doctor, and that’s no bias talkin’. Made top marks, earned her way on ta the best ships, and is now Chief of Staff at Star Fleet Medical. I was never as good a student as she is, no’ that I didn’t try. It was difficult ta be me in her shadow.”
“What’s that like? Movin’ from Marines ta Star Fleet?”
O’Farrell
Taking a sip of the coffee before he replied to the Lieutenant, Sam nodded ” Besides the change in regulations and attire Starfleet’s policies changed over time, and the uniform changed over all the transition was alright. Leaving friends behind was hard enough, especially since growing up it was hard to make them. Never made a love life easy either.” As Sam took a drink outta the cup of coffee.

“No we must make the most of what opportunities we find. Atlantis is a big ship, more like a starbase on warp drive. There are many opportunities ta socialize if yer interested.” Mythology class ships were meant for prolonged deep space missions. The need for ways to rest and relax, to provide a break when opportunities may not present themselves was a huge consideration in her development.
“What do ya think yer greatest strengths are?”
O’Farrell
” I might be interested in those opportunities and as for my greatest strengths I learn fast and I am a hard worker mam.” Sam replied to the question and finished his coffee after question.

“There is always a calendar listing when different events and groups meet.” Cara plucked a PaDD from the table next to her chair and very quickly swiped and tapped and then set it down. “I’ve sent it to your terminal in your quarters.”
“Certainly qualities needed to be a good security officer. What are your greatest weaknesses?”
O’Farrell
” Thank you for that Lieutenant as for my weakness I would say that it would have to be letting how people see me when it comes to my family history. Once they know that your grandfather was an admiral they look at you differently or the fact that both your parents died on the same starship before ya graduate high school. Otherwise, it would be I wasn’t very scientific like my mother she was much like you but a scientist first.” Sam responded as he became more comfortable in the Lieutenant’s Office and more relaxed.
Cara considered him. “I would say that being scientific can be an asset to your work in security. In the fact of being methodical and gathering evidence and coming to conclusions based on evidence. But there is a lot to say about following your instincts and making connections with people. I would suggest reading a paper titled Community-Based Enforcement .”
“Tell me about yer mother and her being a scientist.”
O’Farrell
Sam nodded in agreement to the Lieutenant’s statement when it comes to his line of work. But his demeanor changed when she brought up his mother almost sad and a much different expression came over his face one of loss and pain. And the once confident and grim face spoke. ” My mother was a great woman when she started in Starfleet she was already a doctor and quickly rose through the ranks from the head of the science department and Chef Medical officer to the last parts of her career as ship’s counselor. But her passion lay with her test tubes and finding new cures or antidotes and treatments.” Sam took his right hand and wiped a couple of tears from his eyes. ” But she always had time for me and if it hadn’t been for that big chair on the bridge, I probably would have wound up like my mother maybe.” Sam replied to the Lieutenant.
