The flight had been a long one. However River didn’t care. Uncomfortable conditions was something she was very used to. She walked along the corridors of the Atlantis, her new ship. She had mesmerized the schematics and knew exactly where she was going. She had also read up on the Marines, she was not impressed. The previous MDCO before the current, had manged to get most of his men killed on a fools errand. No wonder he left, if I was command I would have shot him on site she thought to herself.

As she walked she checked her uniform, as expected it was perfect her trouser where pressed, her boot shined and her Captain pike medal of valor was in perfect condition. In a way River was looking forward to this assignment it wasn’t the most active but she knew that it would give her a chance to finish her book and make sure the marines where up to her standards, she doubted it. Of course, she would be careful not to annoy the MDCO, after all the more allies she had the better.

In a matter of moments she had reached the captain ready room, she reached out and rang the chime. she the waited to be let in.

“Come,” Kelly said signing her name to the PaDD. Looking at the time she knew who was at her door. The newest marine on the Atlantis had arrived on the shuttle. While it was not commonplace to meet every crew member upon their arrival, Kelly did enjoy the task of putting a name to a face. Mainly because in times of crisis it created a personal connection instead of ‘Hey Ensign,’ or ‘You’re going to be okay Lt.’

When the door opened the short form of River stepped in. Her cold blue eyes scanning the room. she saw the Captain and walked over to the desk. “Ma’am River Styxx, serial number 44326-7 reporting for duty” she said snapping to attention and saluting .

“Yes you are,” Kelly said with far less zeal than the officer before her. It was not that Kelly didn’t respect River but more that Kelly had relaxed some as she aged and earned rank. “Have a seat,” she said to the young Marine. “Would you like some coffee,” Kelly asked gesturing for River to take the seat across from her desk.

River took the offered seat “Yes. thank you. that is if it is not to much trouble. I’ll have it black” She said respectfully. River felt like it had been a long time since she had been able to sit and have a proper conversation with the senior star fleet officer. In an office that wasn’t well, heavily damaged.

Kelly turned to a round blue disk on her desk instead of walking to the replicator. =/\=Coffee black=/\= she ordered and instantly the cup appeared on the disk as if it was transported there. “Neat trick huh,” she said gesturing for Styxx to take the novelty cup it came in.

River took the cup “I’m just happy to be somewhere where the replicators work” she said as she took a sip. it wasn’t as strong as River liked it but it was fine all the same.

“So Styxx tell me something that is not in this file” Kelly followed up her coffee trick with a cup for herself and a question.

“I’m afraid most of the stuff not included in my file, isn’t very pleasant to tell” River said simply yet respectfully.

“However i am writing a book. It’as about the military history of star fleet. From the united earth fleet right the way through till the modern day. I find it fascinatingly ironic that star fleet, a beacon of peace and prosperity, was matured through countless wars and military actions. After all we are a military arm, a kin to the ancient navy’s of earth. Even if many don’t want to admit it.” she added after a short pause.

“Then they are blind fools that learn a hard lesson,” Kelly agreed. “So was your family career Starfleet or are you the first to sign up and ship out,” she asked taking a drink of her coffee. “My family has always had someone in the ranks since 1945. Back then we were Navy swabbies,” she laughed. “Not all had illustrious careers. Some barely lasted the four years they enlisted for but it has been an unbroken chain. It will be up to my brother Mike’s kids to follow the tradition,” Kelly said with a nod.

River nodded “I believe in a way they are starting to. After all one of the first things the fledgling federation did was disband the MACOs. Now the Marines have been reinstalled as an arm of the federation. i think the countless live lost in previous conflict highlighted the need for the Marines. It only took millions of people to die before they realized it.” River said dryly.

“As for my family. Yes they were. my mother was the Captain of the USS Soulbright. My father was a major in the Marines. Their ship sighted an unknown vessel and reported they’d come under fire. Several ships where dispatched to help them. However when they arrived the Soulbright and the mystery ship were gone. No debris just energy emissions showing they had been a battle. the only reason i know my father is dead is because the last transmission was a list of casualties.” River said after a short pause.

“I’m sorry to hear that. Losing family is hard but unfortunately, it is a hazard we take exploring the unknown.” Kelly did look at Styxx for a second perplexed. “You said the last transmisson was a casuality report. It wasn’t an SOS beacon?”

River nodded “It’s one of the many mysteries about the disappearance of the ship. No evidence of wreckage, only faint energy traces from federation phasers and an unknown power signature, no trial leading to the mystery ship, it just disappeared with the Soulbright, no sign of spatial anomalies, nothing. The only thing the brass could come up with to explain the casualty list and nothing else was that the mystery ship some how scrambled the communication form the soulbright and only the casualty list made it through. However it’s a flimsy theory at best. the truth is no one knows what happened that day.” River said simply taking a drink of her coffee

“What do you think happened,” Kelly asked. Most people always had a theory of thier own. She wondered if Styxx had one or was just accepting of the official report. She doubted it was the latter.
