: : “Well it wouldn’t be a challenge love if there was a floor now would there be? You got this trust me, just think of it like on Rho Puppis me driving the car like a mad man, guts and determination will get us through.”

: “You have three seconds,” Opal yelled to Ian as the Klingon female finished the course. “Bzzzz,” he motioned for Ian to get to the other side of the room.

“Oh you are all buzzkills.” Ian said, taking a drink from his wine as he came across the room taking his place to guide Kelly.

“Okay, you need to take three steps forward and, jump, then slide!” Ian said, hoping that made any sense at all. Right now he wasn’t sure she could make it but it was hard to gauge her from this distance.

“Step, jump, slide. Step, jump, slide,” Kelly said to herself rubbing her hands together. “Step, jump, slide.” Raising her head to where she thought Ian would Kelly screaming “now?”

She got the step, step but then felt an impact to her side like a punching bag from the gym. Then she felt the free fall. Like jumping from a tall diving board into a pool,it only took a few seconds for Kelly to meet a very warm, very soothing, but very wet pool of water. “Ian,” she said breaking the water line and swimming low over to the edge of the path. “No blindfolds,” she said in a quirky accent imitating a short-statured Disney character that was recently playing on a holovid in the Rec room for the kids. “Can I belly crawl this,” she yelled staying low.

Kelly let out a small laugh as she could feel the woosh of the air above her. “This is just like PT in the academy,” she could not stop laughing.

“Bunny hop or long jump,” she called out between burst of laughter. This was the most ridiculous thing she had ever done but was having a bit of fun doing it.

“You’re doing good pumpkin.” Ian said as he took his attention back to Kelly, she was going to make it seemed. She was good, he had to admit he wasn’t sure how coordinated she would have been if it wasn’t for all the positions they had last night.

“I didn’t ask if I was doing good. I asked about the jump span,” Kelly mumbled.

Crouching low to make sure would not get whacked in the head she looked up again to where she imagined Ian was. A loud splash and vicious growl indicated the Klingon couple was not doing any better than she and Ian. The only difference was Ian was not belting out excuses and she was not cursing his progeny in the guttural Klingon tongue.

Hearing the splash next to her, Kelly stiffened a bit. Doing this would be far easier with vision. “This is a piece of cake right,” Kelly grunted needing a bolster to her confidence.

Matching her jumps to what she thought was the distance Ian suggested, Kelly cockily stood up on the last hopscotch block and put her hands on her hips grinning madly. “I’d like to see some other non-telepathed couple try that,” she boasted proudly knowing she was so talking smack to the obviously dry Betazoid next to her. It was then that Ian would see a large octopus like tentacle snaking out of the water and coming directly for Kelly’s ankle.

“Exactly, except for the razor bladed sea creatures.” Ian said as he looked down and saw the waters splashing.

“The wahh....oh god something just touched me. Ian something is tah......chi......me,” Kelly yelped hopping back and forth on one foot and then the other. Whatever touched her felt cold and slimy. In the best circumstances, this was not one of the most comforting sensations.

“Just kidding, don’t worry my love, just keep going on course you got this.” he said as he looked over at the Klingon shaking his head.

“Oh god, oh god, oh gaaaaawd,” Kelly yelped each word out as she hopped forward demonstrating what some called a leap of faith because she was praying with every fiber of her being there was somewhere to land with each hop.

“Wait, uhmm..... that.... that is just your imagination hon. Focus on me, it’s not a tentacle, it’s clearly.... just… seaweed.” he said as his eyes got wide before he looked for the waiter to refill his drink.”

Leaning in towards the Klingon, “How long did it take you to train yours? I just got mine, I feel like it may cost more than it’s worth but I am willing to roll the die.” Ian said as he tilted his head in the direction of Kelly as he drank more of his wine.

“One encounter,” the large Klingon leaned back in his seat. “I broke her right hand until she submitted to me in ritual combative foreplay until she uttered the oath or marriage,” the Klingon said in a superior tone. He nodded to the waiter to also fill his wine as the man topped off Ian’s glass.

“And I broke your leg when yoooouuuu,” the Klingon woman belted out before a large splash indicated she had fallen into the water.

The splash made Kelly look around even though she could not see. Images of a tentacled creature pulling her below the waves like the squid in 20,000 Leagues under the Sea. “Ian…Ian I hate to bother you during social hour but help me,” Kelly growled not sure what to do. “You said step jump slide. Where do I slide?’”

“Okay, now go right, your right love your right!” he said emphatically to her knowing her deficiency, Ian often wondered how she ever made it out of survival training. “Good puppy!” he said as he elbowed the Klingon, “Yeah I think I’ll keep her.” he said softly.

“She is too scrawny for my tastes. How do you not break her,” the Klingon asked?

Captain Kelly Shultz

Feeling a sucker attach to her leg caused Kelly to say screw it. The sound of Ian’s voice was close. Tapping into her inner Kangaroo, Kelly lept with everything towards the sound of Ian’s voice landing at his feet below the stool he and the Klingon were occupying.

“Yes! Yes,” Opal’s voice rang out. “See a little faith in your partner and you can surmount any challenge. Nameste,” Opal said with a bow as the Klingon pulled herself from the water and the Betazoid male crossed the last barrier as if he had been blind his entire life.

Kelly propped herself up on her elbows and pulled the blindfold from her face. Glancing back at the course that now looked like a Marine obstacle course instead of the cushioned paradise she entered she could only utter one sentence. “Did you drink all my wine?’

Captain Kelly Shultz

“Your wine? It was for me.” he said as he continued sipping. “It wasn’t as good as you might think, it isn’t rum.” he said as he as he took another sip. “You wouldn’t like it at all, I can tolerate it just fine.” he said with a wink at her as he put the cup down coming to her as he helped get her on her feet. He couldn’t help but feel a sense of joy as he had her close to him.

“You did amazingly well puppy.” he said as he leaned in and gave her a soft kiss.

Kelly broke the kiss with a half laugh. “Ian you are so going to owe me,” she replied linking her hands and letting them rest at the small of his back. “Oh yeah. I think running the gauntlet and surviving Captain Nero’s ode to the squid spectacular means coffee in bed for a month,” she kissed his lips again softly. This was nothing like the vacation he promised her back in her ready room; however, it turned out to be much more. Despite being tied into a pretzel and running an obstacle course that would make Herman Hornsby cringe, Kelly had an amazing time. Ian was fun and exciting. She needed someone like that in her life. Ian had proven he could separate the job and a personal life. Of course, people’s tongues would wag and of course, people would find out eventually but she was human and had a need for a personal life. WIth the right man she could be both Captain and Kelly.

“I’m okay with owing you…” Ian said softly. He hadn’t planned any of this, he just knew Kelly had been under a lot of stress. It was one of his many jobs to make her look good, help keep the ship on track, and keep diplomatic relations with species they meet in order.

Pressing his forehead to hers he took a deep breath. “Honestly, I am thrilled this didn’t just blow up all in my face when I finally let my feelings out. I am a professional, I have always been able to separate work and pleasure but… I never found someone I wanted like this, to spend that off work hours doing insane adventures. I am glad I didn’t bury these feelings so far deep they got lost.”

Ian began to lean in when he heard a familiar voice behind him, stopping him from kissing her once more.

“So thank you all for coming and renewing your strength in chi, love, and trust,” Opal said with a flourish throwing back his wine. “Now sign your forms on the way out and come back soon.”

“Papers?” Ian said, this certainly wasn’t the kind of place he expected. He had to do better next time.

“Not likely,” Kelly said taking Ian’s hand in hers as she walked towards the door. “Next trip I am planning it,” she gave him a half chuckle.

“Oh? You up for the task? It takes skill and effort to complete this.” Ian said with a wink at Kelly as they began to leave, the adventure seeming to finally be over.

Taking the PaDD from an attendant at the door, Kelly half glanced at the form. “Insurance waiver. Little late,” she said with a smile pushing a wet lock of hair off of her face.

Ian looked a little closer then looked back at the Trill girl. Kelly may have glanced but Ian’s job was to make sure all paper work came in correctly.

“No it is your certificate for passing the course,” the Trill who escorted them to the room said simply.

Signing the form with a flourish, Kelly looked at Ian. “We should get that framed one day,” she winked at him.

Captian Kelly Shultz

“Kelly you should…” he huffed slightly as he saw her sign. “You never sign something without fully reading it.” Ian said, knowing full well that all her papers he had her sign he read and re read before giving her the gist.

Ian sighed, signing the paper he threw it back a the Trill. He didn’t feel like fighting over this and they needed back. He could lecture her on the safeties of contract signing later.
