Matty finally made her way to the Captain’s Ready Room to officially report for duty. She rang the chime and waited.

CTO

Kelly looked at her watch hearing the time and back at the screen. “Yeah I don’t know Dante,” she gave him a worn, weary look, “but we will handle it like everything else that gets thrown at us. I will get back to you about Baikal. We are going to have to make our way back to Earth sooner rather than later and I could really use some time to get away away and not spend the entire time at Ian and mine’s parents. Annapolis sucks in the winter anyway. However, I got a meeting so I have to run. Talk to you soon.”

Kelly clicked off the call and yelled, “come in,” as she stood up to greet her newest CTO.

Matty stepped in “Captain, a pleasure to meet you finally.” She said extending her hand before offering her transfer documents. Madison took in thecroom, she found it interesting how each Captain decorated differently, it showed a great deal about their personality.

“Yes we have been eagerly awaiting your arrival. You come highly recommended by Admiral McLaren,” she took the transfer documents and placed them on the side of her desk. Kelly let a smile cross her face. Most people had the same reaction when entering her office for the first time. “Most of these things are community property from my ex. Ric Erins....star of Man vs. Universe,” she shared. It was not like it was secret knowledge and eventually, it always came out along with varied questions.

Ric Erins survival show Man vs. Universe was still a top-rated show pumped out by the multi-media conglomerate OMAP thanks to Aedan Teller. Ric Erins entertained billions across the Federation with his public dive into the most secluded cultures and societies of the Federation. Maddie may have seen it or not. It didn’t really matter to Kelly however usually the explanation of her previous marriage explained the flutes, whistles, jerseys, toys, plants, and other objects displayed on her walls and shelves. “Can I get you something to drink,” Kelly asked.

Mattie shook her head “I’m good. Thank you.” Mattie grinned “That’s rather scary that I have a reputation. I try to fly under the radar.” She said

CTO

“Most people that excel at things tend to try fly under the radar. The fact you don’t break your own arm patting yourself on the back is what has earned the respect of all your previous commanders.” Kelly gesture for the woman to take a seat across from her desk. Relaxing back in her chair, Kelly asked the first question she did of any senior staff transferring to the ship. “So Sullivan with all the options of positions available to you why did you pick the Atlantis?”

Mattie leaned back in the chair “Well, I was bored with teaching at the Academy and I wanted to see a different part of space and you had an opening.” She said “Granted, most of my previous assignments has me at an Engineer, but while at the Academy I also studied tactics and figured that the engineering background will give me a leg up when planning how to disable a ship or whatever I have to do.” She said “Also, if the engineering team goes down, I can keep us in the air for a while anyway.” She said with a slight smile.

“Well we are lucky to have you,” Kelly nodded knowing Maddie was very passive in selling her skills. The comment of getting a leg up brought a small smile to her face. Maddie’s performance as a tactician was not just passable but leaps and bounds above many others who spent their entire career devoted to the field. “So what is the one thing you want to do here. Pie in the sky goal. I find people work the best and are happiest when they are achieving something they want vs. something I tell them to do. Now there are plenty of times I am going to have to tell you what to do but I really would love to also support you.”

Maddie thought about that for a moment “Honestly, I don’t know.” She said “I’m just happy to her back on a ship.” She said “I’ll have to get back to you on what my pie in the sky goal is, I haven’t thought about it much.” Maddie nodded “I appreciate that Captain. Not many Captains are willing to be that supportive of their people.”

“So how were your quarters? Need anything?”
