“Yeah, Cara can you and Ian take the orb and see what you can find out about the Endorians and the Caste. See if there is anything on that quote she who is without fault name the guilty. You’re right. It sounds biblical almost and half the time bible verses are not all turn the other cheek. The Elipse gave us a rundown on the major races in this area but compile a more detailed dossier if you can. I am tired of going into everything blind. See if there is something you can find that they all agree on or connects them and what is the straw that is going to break the camels back.” Kelly’s order was tall but Cara was amazing at her job. Kelly had no doubts the woman would know the races inside and out to the best of her ability by the time they arrived at the base.

Cara nodded and got up from her seat and moved to the back of the bridge. It would be quieter to work in the observation lounge or a conference room, but she was loathe to move the Orb from the bridge where it could be used by everyone if needed. Pressing a button a chair popped out from under the console and Cara pulled a PaDD from a nearby storage compartment and sat down. “Alright Orb tell me de origin of the sayin’, ‘she who is without fault name de guilty’.”

O’Farrell

“It is a common Endorian secular conversion of the religious statement. ‘May the pure determine the penance.’ It has also been related at ‘Only God can judge the sin,’ and several other nominal variations.”

“Me whenever I want to get snarky with my wife,” Ian said moving up beside Cara waiting to see what the Orb would reply. Right now there was not a lot for him to do so maybe he would be able to help out Cara with her task.

Ian Bordeaux

Cara gave a slight nod as the diplomatic officer walked up.

“The Endorian species aren’t renown for their religiosity. However that statement has made its way into the common vernacular.” He Orb continued to flash a comfortable Purple.

GM

“Let’s hope that is all it is,” Ian replied. “Kinda like those that live in glass houses should not throw the first stone.” As a diplomat, the first thing Ian learned was legality and morality varied widely in the universe. Betazeds were a highly respected culture and society and yet there was no way he would be taking anyone in his family to a Betazed wedding since it involved all the guests coming naked. It was common to bite one’s intimate partner and leave scratches and marks during a Klingon coupling and yet if Kelly was walking around with a broken arm or bruises after date night, security would have a few questions.

Ian Bordeaux CDO

“Orb, what are the moral, legal, and social implications associated with this statement?”

“It commonly is a statement of acceptance, that the person speaking it is willing to leave the judgement to a higher power. It doesn’t have a direct legal meaning in the Endorian culture as it isn’t a legal statement it is a religious one. ”

Well if they were talking Earth sayings it was right on par and that was a bit of a relief, but to clarify, “Could the statement be interpreted that everyone has made mistakes and errors of judgement, therefore, others should not be quick to judgment?” Just for clarity. Cara liked to be thorough.
“Orb, can you tell me, considering all the species that visit and occupy Base 5, is there any underlying commonality between them? Anything at all, from a specific type of food to a religious belief? A basic law they all agree on and follow? A common weakness?”

O’Farrell

The Orb actually paused. “They all breathe oxygen, theft, murder, and rape are illegal. Most regulations accepted in the Federation are accepted by the majority of the races in this sector. Each race has comparative weakness to the human race, but much like the Federation they have their respective strengths as well.”

Orb

“Which Federations regulations are not accepted by the majority of the races in this sector? Do any of those races, singly or together, have regulations that the Federation does not? Also, let’s go back to the weaknesses. Forget physical weaknesses, consider social, cultural, and political weaknesses.”

O’Farrell

Ian scratched his jaw. This far out no one seemed to have heard about the Federation but the orb did seem to know something about everything. “Orb, can you also give us a rundown on the penal codes for the major races that might pertain to disruption on Base Five. Oh, say assaulting law enforcement on Base Five, bringing weapons onto Base Five, discharging a weapon on Base Five, actions resulting in the use of escape pods on Base five, fleeing the scene of a crime on Base Five…just to name a few?” The more Ian talked the worse it sounded. As diplomatic encounters went, Base Five was not a stellar performance bu the crew.

Glancing at Cara he shrugged, “you were not in our away party.”

Ian Bordeaux

Cara didn’t say it, but she thought that was a good thing. “Orb, is it likely that the authorities will only charge the officers in attendance, or the designated leader, and not hold the crew that remained on the ship responsible?” The Atlantis had roughly 1,000 souls on board. It would be a tragedy if those who were quietly doing their jobs were held accountable for the acts of a few.

The Orb started a run down of laws on Base Five that seemed to resemble that which the Federation enforced. There was some more freedoms with weapons possession, but the consequences for using them was about the same. The crew was permitted to bring weapons but they were registered upon boarding and their power traces were noted and thus identification when used was simple to track. (the actual consequences are listed on the bridge thread.)

The other races had other consequences that varied from more severe to lighter, the Alfians for instance one had sentences that had a fee attached to them and you could simply buy your way out of most punishments if you had enough money. The Nine had some more physical punishments, like lashings, maiming, and starvation.

“Which set of cultural rules is used on Base 5? Or does Base 5 have it’s own drafted set of laws and regulations? Who decides which laws and regulations apply to a situation?”

“Oh!” Came Nash’s voice from a console. “Ask it about diplomatic immunity laws out here. We are basically diplomats for the Federation right?” Then he turned back to the console, and started humming a tune. Every now and then, he sang the words It wasn’t me and it sounded like he started a new verse.

Nash, CE

Ian snapped his fingers in rapid succession and then pointed at the chief engineer. “Good point Nash. First-round is on me later and don’t get all high and mighty about your away team. I am sure you all did something too. If you didn’t this time you sure as hell did before. ‘Member Rigel V,” Ian raised an eye brow. “I do. In fact I seem to remember running like a lunatic through that cornfield because your damn cigar set fire to the dry leaves and we almost died from smoke inhalation. We were damn lucky that Orion Syndicate had a drug smuggling operation in the middle of the field we could blame that one on. Orb is there a diplomatic immunity clause on Base Five?”

“You were acknowledged as travelers from another intergalactic power, however being from another planet does not give you the rights and protections of diplomats, however that argument may have traction if the commanders of Base Five are so inclined. However even in the case of diplomats, there is no general immunity from laws outside their own quarters.”

“That was a while back,” he shrugged. Looking at Cara, Ian leaned back. “You know until now I hated that clause but it sure might come in handy,” he adjusted the sleeve of his shirt as he waited for the orb to start answering back on all the questions he and Cara just flung at it.

Ian Bordeaux

“Well apparently it won’t do you any good unless dealing with our own people or situations aboard our own vessel. And considering the sheer number of charges and types, I’m guessing these events weren’t confined to quarters they gave the teams. So diplomatic immunity is out the window.”

“That fire was intentional,” Nash grinned. “I could smell Mary Jane from the other side of the field, and I didn’t see you complaining when we were all super relaxed afterwards and stopping at Spacebucks for snacks.”

Nash

“No, but Kelly was less than thrilled,” Ian let out a half-laugh.

Ian Bordeaux

OOC sorry… I just can’t seem to read anymore

OOC: No problem. Thanks

IC:
“Orb tell me more about the Endorians and the Caste. Anything “The great One” didn’t tell us. Specifically how to effectively communicate and create report with them. And while we’re at it, are there any customs of politeness, civility, respect the captain should be aware of and use when addressing the court system on Base 5?”
