Nash came to a stop outside the door to Fell-Draykes office, on duty so in the red of the Command Division, the Chief Tactical Officer hadn’t met with Relann for some time and had certainly had little to do with the XO outside of official matters and the Bridge. While it wasn’t exactly a first impression scenario Nash did check his cuffs and made sure everything was on straight, even running a hand through his hair and wondering, only for a very slight moment, if he should have shaved a little closer to the skin to remove more of the tidy stubble that gave him his normal roguish appearance.

Deciding that he was exactly as he should be, the broad shouldered man rang the chime to Relann’s office, minutes earlier than the time assigned to the meeting. As an afterthought he made sure the flip lighter and cigar were tucked deeper into his tunic pockets for later, although the coin did reappear in his fingers and deftly move between them as he waited for the door to open.

“Enter,” came the melodically accented voice of the Dy’allan.

Inside, Relann was working at her desk, her gaze fixed on her computer terminal. Her snow white hair was tidily swept up and pinned at the back of her head in an intricate knot. Flicking her violet eyes up, she smiled and gestured with a mocha coloured hand for him to come in. “Have a seat, Commander. Just give me a moment to finish something before Command starts complaining to the Captain because we don’t have our reports ready,” she said with a small grin as she tapped a few keys.

Nash moved forwards and traveled the few steps that brought him to Relanns desk. With a short, deliberate nod in acknowledgement he took the seat offered and placed his PaDD on the desk nearest him, with a final flip of his fingers the coin seeming to disappear back to some hidden pocket. “Take your time Sir” he said, relaxing into the seat, “Command gets finicky about the reports and there’s no rush.” He looked at the woman for a moment, taking in the details before moving his eyes to the random features around the room.

“That they do,” she said with a small chuckle.

The office wasn’t big, but it was functional. It also did reflect it’s owner enough for guests to glimpse a part of the first officer they might not always see on duty shifts and meetings. There was a dark green potted plant in the corner that was in bloom with large white and purple flowers, and a couple photos on the wall behind her desk. One image was her and Jacen on their wedding day in which they had a Dy’allan ceremony and a mostly Terran style reception, while the other frame was the couple with their adopted daughter, Sowyn, whom was Dy’allan like Relann. Other than that, on the desk in the corner in front of him was a silver medallion about ten centimeters in diameter. It was divided into four quadrants with each containing an engraved symbol of some kind, like some sort of script in an alien language.

“May I get you anything to drink?” she asked after a couple minutes as she pushed her chair back away from the desk.

“I’d like that, thank you” Nash smiled slightly before his features returned to their normal, slightly gruff set. “White chocolate moccachino with a hazelnut shot, please.” It was a little known fact that the sullen, quiet and sarcastic CTO had a wicked sweet tooth. He tended to keep to himself, dine alone and rarely sought company.

Fell looked at him curiously. “I know that’s coffee, because I’ve had mocha before, but I can’t say I’ve ever had that before. I think I might just have to try it myself,” she said with some unexpected delight.

Grabbing their drinks, she returned to the desk and set them down before settling in.

“Our Tactical evaluations are in” he commented, tapping the PaDD with a minimum of effort. “Response times improved by 40 seconds in the last drill, and our combat effectiveness rating improved by 7% in total. We also showed a marked improvement in multi target scenarios, that little trick creating a warp shadow from our deflector providing a nice little bit of confusion in the aggressor AI and giving us the advantage. All round, we beat the fleet average by a respectable amount.”

“Just the way I like it,” she said with a slightly wicked smile. Relann had never been competitive before, but it was something she found popping up more and more lately. Was it a result of Links, or was it just a part of her that had been subsumed under years of the dutiful practices of her Faith? She wasn’t sure, so she let that thought pass through her mind unanswered.

“What about that slight lag in the phasers we were experiencing?” she asked before taking an adventurous sip from her mug. Her violet eyes went immediately wide. “Wow!” she exclaimed before he could respond to her question. “That’s sweeter than I was expecting. Not that that is bad, just surprising,” she said realizing how her remarks might have come across.

Nash raised his own cup to her in a mock ‘cheers’ salute and took a mouthful of the coffee, savoring the sweet and hot drink for a moment before putting down the cup. “It’s one of my own favorites” he told her, “designed to get you awake in the morning and keep you awake while on the job. It’s not to most peoples taste I admit” he smiled, “but it has been with me since the Academy.”

“The lag in the phasers” he returned to the PaDD, “we found was caused by an errant run-time calculation in the targeting software. It was running extra checks on the firing solution when it didn’t need to, possibly it slipped through our last series of updates from Starbase as our own diagnostics did not recognize it as an error, meaning it was built in. We’ve adjusted the software to remove the extra calculation without reducing the safety margins and notified the techs at Starfleet Operations. Our next series of evaluations will see more improvement on the response times as our phasers can target and fire faster now without losing accuracy.”

Nash picked up his cup again and took another drink, the powerful sweet hit not seeming to phase him. “I’m still requesting a higher proportion of Quantum torps to the standard Photon’s, the higher loading time can be offset by the new auto-loader we had installed and they simply performed better in the simulation. Being more powerful we will also need to use fewer of them, thus saving our resources in a stand up fight and making the shorter ones more efficient.”
